It's like wearing an edgy Hot Topic t-shirt to a wedding, it's something people with juvenile minds would do. It's just really awkward to be branding your wedding with superheroes.

Oh I definitely draw the line at clothing to a wedding but its a cake that is going to be eaten, go for it. My wife and I both love comics, video games, etc. and I could see her getting something like this. As long as what is on there means something to the people getting married, I say go for it.

If that is what the couple likes then great. The wedding isn't for the guests. The wedding is for the two people getting married. If they want to have a He-Man and Carebears cake, so be it.

Why is it dumb? Because it's not the social norm? Screw that! If two people are celebrating the sharing of their lives together, and their shared interests happen to be superheroes then they should be able to celebrate that openly regardless of whatever her prudish Grandma thinks.

Honestly, if the compromise was between what they wanted and what was socially acceptable then they should have just said to hell with all the poncey orthodox traditionalist dross and done the full cake in superheroes. It would help filter your guest list between the ones that truly are your loved ones and the ones who are just there for the free wine and to check your bedsheets to make sure you were chaste.

It's just odd communicating that "This is IMPORTANT" regarding random super-heroes during a wedding. It's orthogonal. Like that's great, but why?

Why not put on a fun super-heroes BBQ and movie watching party the weekend after if you're so stoked on it?

I imagine that was because of the "compromise" part of the title, the bit I'm saying we should do away with.

Also why wouldn't superhero's not be Important? If they met at a comic book convention, went to see the Dark Knight on their first date and bonded over a shared interest in these characters, then I'd say to a couple that has just decided to spend their lives together it is absolutely important.

I think you misunderstand the purpose of becoming an adult. The point isn't to relinquish your passions and say, "Okay, I'm over the age of maturity, time to stop watching cartoons and start playing, uh, golf or something," it's to say, "Fuck it, I have a job, I pay my bills, I have a happy, stable family life, and I'm going to repaint my Jeep to look like the ones from Jurassic Park because they're fucking badass." If you're into that. And if you're not into that, to head out and do something else that makes you happy, because life's too short to live to other people's spectacularly boring expectations.

But seriously, though, I mean, if you think that cake's silly and awkward, you're not going to be friends with this couple. Because this couple and their friends get a kick out of superheroes, comic books, video games, whatever. Maybe they go to conventions, maybe they cosplay, who knows. They've defined adulthood as, "Fuck it, why are we taking this shit so seriously?" and all the more power to them. They have jobs, they have lives, and this stuff is their passion, a passion they probably share on some level with most of the people in attendance.

Because who'd want to be friends with someone who'd judge a person for having a superhero themed wedding cake? I wouldn't, and I don't mean that as a slam against you -- I'm sure you're a fantastic person, but you're not my sort of person and, frankly, you're probably not their sort of person, either. And that's okay.

What I'm trying to say is, adult is what you make of it. As long as you're meeting your obligations, that you can keep the lights on and your family fed, what defines "fun" for you is entirely your business. Because you're an adult, dammit. Why hide who you are?
