A good response (from a similar tale): "I'm sorry, I don't understand what your problem is. Can you find a woman to explain it for you?" - credit goes to /u/rtfm2tldr (i changed the gender, for obvious reasons)

Call the persons boss and mention this. You would be surprised at the effect it can have.

Actually what I would suggest is having OP's Boss call this idiots Boss. Not to say that she isn't capable of having that conversation herself, but it means substantially more when management from one company calls management from another, rather than a front line working calling management from the other company.

That should be one of the option for sure.

Considering that this could cost the company money/time and damage it's image the guys boss would be stupid not to reprimand.

the guys boss would be stupid not to reprimand.

So obviously since nobody has ever heard of a stupid boss nothing can go wrong?

I dunno, every stupid boss I've met has been pretty damn good at covering their ass and making sure proper policies were followed, even if they did nothing else for weeks at a time.

Have another upvote for the most level suggestion. If OP speaks directly to that caveman's supervisor and frames it as "this tech's actions are costing everyone involved both time and money", they'll light a fire under his ass. There's no excuse for treating anyone like that just because they "want to talk to a guy". The support team I T3 for has several women on it, and everyone on the team was trained by me so I know they know their stuff. If one of our field techs tried to pull that crap, our manager would be reporting it to the tech's manager so fast their head would spin.

I got hung up on once because I wan't a male. It was a woman caller too. She called back and got a guy a row over from me who then troubleshot the case. My supervisor was mad when I told him what happened.

I would wish more female admins and developers. I work in a software agency. Only one of ~40 developers is female. And four in the design / graphics department, of 8. We are 60 people in total

Our IT dept is 60% female, which is the lowest that ratio has been in the 4 years I've been here. The problem we've had is that the ones who have been here a while get along great with most men, but seem to have personality conflicts with some of the new women that we bring in. Given that tech is a male-heavy field, I also find it odd that only women ever make it as far as the interview stage for every position we've had open since I started. So I suspect that the reason nobody else has that many women in tech is because we're apparently hogging them all.

Or maybe the employer found a way to cut wages.

Either that, or your manager secretly has your department doubling as a fetish webcam site and didn't tell any of you. Might want to check the bathrooms and under the desks for hidden toilet/upskirt cams.

I am part of a group working with schools in the UK that is trying to encourage women to get into software/IT type roles. We took a survey a while back revealing that most women would avoid it because they grow up being told "it isn't a woman's job" off parents and unfortunately crotchety old IT guys.

Give it about 5 or so years and significant effects may become more apparent. :)

[–]TuxGamerPress start to shut down

Sometimes being an idiot is both crime and punishment. He could have had his problem fixed straight away, instead he has to wait. Is that sufficient justice?

No, not really. Which is why we have laws in place to punish this kind of behavior. I second the above opinion of mentioning this to his boss. Just write him a letter describing his behavior.

"Do you want to speak with the man in charge or the woman who knows what she's doing?"

That is a sign at my local fastener supply(bulk nuts, bolts, etc) where the warehouse and counter are run by mostly women.

[–]philipwhiukOh God How Did This Get Here?

Then he probably should be seeking help for that and not at work. Besides which I don't believe that exists.

[–]philipwhiukOh God How Did This Get Here?

If you have that you should be seeking psychological help and probably shouldn't be at work at all.

I seriously doubt the guy had the condition.

In all seriousness, I had a friend with a phobia of girls / women. He really tried his best. He would never be rude and ask for a male to help instead of a woman, he would just give short answers and make little to no eye contact.

Some friends and I helped him work through the worst of it though. By the end, he was able to make small conversation (awkwardly) and look women in the eye for the most part.

In all honesty, I think it was that a lot of pressure was put on him as a young kid to interact with girls and he associated girls with that pressure / anxiety and it just kept growing until it was a phobia.

I doubt this guy in OP's story is like this, but it does exist unfortunately.

[–]philipwhiukOh God How Did This Get Here?

You can't go around modern life with a visible fear of 49.9% of the population. Your friend needed a psychiatrist.

So illegal..... I would take the note and contact my own company's HR department for advise on how to proceed.

Discrimination regarding work assignments based on protected class includes your customers, by the way.

As far as I'm concerned; it's an instant-termination offense to make a call to a vendor for software support and insist that your PoC or the work be done by a male.

1) Just to clarify, your service agreement mandates a timeframe in which we respond to support issues. Are you agreeing to waive this requirement?

2) Are you making a personal call or are you representing $ITCompany at this time?

Save recording for CYA and to bury him for a) wasting $ITCompany time on personal issues or b) engaging in harassment on behalf of their company.

[–]picnic_lightning_Who you gonna call?

I've had a similar thing happen to me only once in my 6 years in the business. That was some 4 years ago, while speaking to $AncientLady.

I was pretty baffled. Don't take it personally, some people are really narrow-minded.

Happens all the time. My all female support staff will have me call secretaries and others to tell the customer the exact same answer support gave them, only they accept it this time because a man said it. Call it a "Manswer."

Story time!

Boss in my 2nd or 3rd IT job. Little 20-man operation answering phones for pharmaceutical rep laptop support. Boss needs to hire somebody new. Goes to an interview and returns.

In front of everybody (including the sole female employee who was there before he was hired), "Really great references, great experience, really knows her stuff... damn, too bad she's a woman." and throws the resume in the garbage.

Send an accompanying note to the person you pass $ManlyDude's name and number to, saying to have $ManlyDude get in contact with you because you're the best person to deal with his problem. Saw a post once here where a female IT received a call, had it redirected to a superior because she was female, then directed back because she could handle the situation better.

I ran a tech. support dept. for a little while and trained people. One of the techs was a woman. She got a call that was very similar, except the guy didn't like the solution so he asked for a "man". I went to her cubicle. Put him on speaker phone, explained who I was, went over the exact same steps and got the same result. I said, "I have FemaleSupport person right here and I followed her notes, and they were 100% correct." The guy hung up.

[–]AnandaUK44,000 staff need their passwords NOW

I once had a Senior Manager phone and insist on speaking to my male colleague. Now, little does she know, I'm way more computer literate than him. I can run circles around him in all of the systems we administrate, and frequently have to correct the information he's giving out because it's just plain wrong. But this manager insisted she had to speak to him. Well, he was on annual leave that week so she wasn't going to speak to him even if she insisted on it. I tried to explain to her that he and I hold the same post and I'm more than capable of solving her problem, however she wouldn't even log in and try to listen to what I had to say. I'm normally really professional on my calls, but this woman is a nasty piece of work and I actually ended up being really nasty back to her and she brought out the 'DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?' Yes, I did know and it didn't give her any right to treat me the way she treated me and I told her so. I was so mad at her I started crying and she ended up hanging up on me.

Now, I know the whole reason she wanted to speak to my male colleague is that when he gets frustrated with trying to teach someone how to do something, he'll just take their login details and do it for them, and that's what she wanted. But that's not our job and we are definitely not supposed to be asking people for their confidential passwords. All we are supposed to do is teach them how to do what they need to do so that they can take ownership of their responsibilities. I knew if she spoke to my male colleague and he did this for her, she'd just keep phoning and expecting us to do it for her.

After the phone call I immediately went to my manager and told her about the call for a couple reasons, firstly I wanted her to know that I'd got a bit nasty with this person and she might get a phone call from them, and secondly I wanted her to tell my colleague when he returned that he was under NO CIRCUMSTANCES to do anything for this person if she phoned and asked him to do it. My manager really likes me and she told me if she got a call from the Senior Manager she would back me up and make sure to set her straight on how to treat staff, and she also said she would make sure that male colleague didn't ever help this person again by doing her work for her.

I wish I could say that this manager got her comeuppance, but she never phoned my manager to complain, and I don't know if she ever phoned my colleague and tried to get him to do things for her. I have spoken to her myself since then and she's acted like nothing ever happened.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what's to stop you from saying "no." to his request to speak to a man? Why are you catering to him? Am I too naive or something?
