This is a good point. Whatever shape the rule may finally take, I think you make a very strong point and I think gify's should be excluded from whatever final rule (if any) there is. Like you said, it probably doesn't make sense to include them. Your point about time and effort to bring content to the community cannot be ignored and BTW thanks for that time and effort.

This is a great post and I thank you for taking the time and effort to be constructive. This is super helpful, I especially appreciated that it was data driven and avoided straying into emotional territory. It made your argument much stronger.

you want images banned, so you ban gifs too and then we complain and you say, fine you guys win we will unban gifs yay!

but, images are banned - so you get what you wanted.

I think that's a cynical way to look at it and, frankly, assumes a lot more cunning on our part than you can really give us credit for.

What happened is we made a trial rule change, someone posted a very well reasoned piece of dissent and I responded honestly to it. That's it.

May I ask as to why pictures can be allowed still but only as self posts? I don't really care about karma and any of that, but for me, who usually goes on mobile, it is easier to see when it is a linked post with a picture.

I just feel like taking away being able to do that would do two things:

1) make it look a bit sloppier when pictures are trying to be posted

2) (Ok, this is more a question) what difference would it make?

pictures are easier to browse when not self posts too, you can spot a crappy meme as a thumbnail for example and avoid it, if its a self post you need to take the effort of clicking the image and loading it first.

The mobile question is a tricky one. Not sure what to do about that.

As to the purpose or difference we hope/expect it to make - the notion is to promote a higher standard of submissions where images are concerned. A self post has room for an OP to add additional information to support the post. The second part of this is that direct image posts are very quickly digestible. So they tend to be quickly upvoted, often much faster than higher-effort, less easily digestible content like any kind of user-created analysis or similar.

The end goal is to create a better atmosphere for high quality content to thrive.

So a pin-pointed, high-quality, mobile-friendly moment from a race is "not the kind of content the subreddit wants"?

I don't get to watch races anywhere near as much as I want, and the gfys posted here are so useful that honestly they're why I come to this sub 9/10 times. Is there any actual reason behind this?

Would you guys review the decision in, say, 2 months to see if this actually made a difference in quality? Because of it doesn't, it just makes the sub harder to scroll through.

Who in their right mind doesn't like images and gifs? If I ever gave you upvotes it was because of those.

Do you browse /r/cars at all? They have a similar rule and it prevents the sub from being flooded with "spotted" posts. When people do post something, it makes them take an extra 30 seconds and think about and write a sentence or two about why they are posting it. Overall, I'd say it's been a successful rule over there. I think if they unban gifycat and thus allow race gifs, we should be gettign the best of both worlds for the most part.
