I always thought that if you gripped something like a hot doorknob normally your nerves could kind of fire and make you hold on? That's why they always said to use the back of your hand to test hot doors and things. Or was that another childhood lie grown ups told us?

Electricity can tense up muscles so they cant release. Hot and cold wont do that. You have more nerves on your palm than the back of your hand, less pain if the handle is actually hot.
