How about we stop cheering on these athletes and start cheering on the people in labs doing research on how to save the world?

Edit: Wow, the downvotes are coming so fast. I thought this might actually be upvoted. I find this extremely sad and pathetic.

Because a person catching a ball is far more relatable to the average human than a person spinning a centrifuge.

save the world from what? Starvation? Cancer? Death? Are we to cheer on scientists to figure out a way to prevent death and support the lives of 10, 15, 30 billion people? Pack us in so closely and figure out the best "human management system" to where all 30 billion of us can live just to breathe rather than enjoy. There is not going to be much of a planet to see if there are 30 billion homes sitting on it.

Anything that increases sustainability and quality of life is worth cheering on to me.

What am I supposed to do just go into a lab and fucking stand there and cheer? People donate billions of dollars to those scientists homie.

Sports are fun and awesome.

I didn't literally mean fucking cheer them on. I mean celebrate them. Support them (yes, with money). If you think science funding is anywhere near adequate you're severely naive.

But naw....go spend $150/month for that sports cable package and hundreds of dollars on tickets and merchandise. That's a better use of resources for sure.

You obviously have low brain function.

Yeah I like sports so that means I am stupid! My fuck you must just sit around all day feeling superior to everyone around you, probably in a comfortable chair at least though.

shrug watching people play sports is just pathetic. They don't know you. They don't care about you. Watching them does nothing. Go play yourself.

I fucking do, I also watch. It's a fun thing to do, it brings people and entire communities together, I watch with my friends and we have beers and have fun. What the fuck does it matter to you if other people enjoy it?

The NFL had 200 million viewers in 2014, brought in an estimated $9 billion in revenue, about 45 dollars per viewer. The Average NFL salary is 1.9 million dollars. There's 54 roster spots on 32 teams for 1728 players. That comes out to about 36% of the revenue going to athlete salaries.

[–]Dontblameme1 -1ポイント0ポイント  (4子コメント)

Your...point?

[–]SenorPuff 0ポイント1ポイント  (2子コメント)

It's not '$150/month'. It's $45 per person for the whole year, subsidized by advertising for a huge chunk of it.

[–]Dontblameme1 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

Ok, wow. Some people spend much more than $45/month and some pay zero. What the fuck is your point?

[–]SenorPuff 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

The NFL had about 16 million attendees last year. Most viewers never go to games. Seeing as the average revenue per person is $45 per person, most people's viewership is subsidized by advertisements.

Relative to the value of the industry in which they perform and create shareholder/owner value, as well as the myriad attached businesses that coattail the value of sports, perhaps the amount that premier athletes are paid is, in fact, of relative sensibility and fairness. I think something like that is the point.
