Let's just be honest, though: Jeph has created a world full of working-wage characters where androids are common and privately-owned space stations are a thing.
That there are so few references to classic cyberpunk fiction is kind of baffling.
Yup.
Now let's get some Elves, Dwarves and cool shaman magic in there and it'll be a real treat.
I'm thinking more along the lines of a character who is violently upset when somebody fucks up their basic desires for "a girl, a cigarette, and a place to sleep".

I think you just described /r/TheRedPill. :P

I can't tell if you're trying too hard to pick a fight with your favorite shithole sub, if you completely missed the reference, or both, but my money's definitely on "both".

Dingdingding. You win! But def more of the former.
It's actually kind of sad.
That's really one of the most poignant moments in the book, when you realize that his life is so dismal that all he cares about is having a small luxury, a safe place to sleep, and a person he can share that with.

Which book?

"Neuromancer" by William Gibson.
It's kind of a big deal

Huh, didn't expect to see a Shadowrun reference here. Has Jeph done that before?
Dunno if there's been an explicit one, but it's in-character for Marten, previous president of the AD&D club back in high school.

3rd edition, no less.
Or did they revert back to decker from 4th edition "hacker"?

In 5th edition I think it's back to decker. Decks are back anyway, instead of just using comlinks.

This pretty much says that Claire's family has a history of doing something stupid to impress people. Remember all the shit Clinton went through?
Wasn't that like yesterday in-comic time?
Something like that. Definitely this week. Maybe it has something to do with the lunar calendar. Full moon, Claire's family goes nuts. Clinton reinvents himself, Claire get an idea for a new look, Claire's mom buys a new flavor of tea...
But...didn't Claire just say that she's not doing this to impress people?
Yeah but in her mind's eye she's just striking a pose while people are impressed by her... so she mightve just been saying that
Yeah, maybe. Or maybe people just want to believe she's only doing this to impress other people so they'll decide that's what she means even if she's not saying that.
Why do I get the feeling that this, of all things, is going to lead to drama between these two? Marty not liking the idea all that much, Claire thinking he has no right to, yada yada yada. Could be wrong, but my drama radar is making a bit of noise.
I think it's time for SS Clarten to get a bit of rocking (that whole shebang with Faye doesn't count). It's been riding the tailwinds for too long I feel.

Idk, man, lately every time a comic has come up with these two, there's always someone saying, "Oh, this will be the thing that leads to drama!"
Hasn't happened yet, I'm just saying. But I guess if someone new makes this prediction every single time, then someone is bound to be right eventually.
In retrospect, I'm kind of surprised there aren't more piercings in the strip, Jeph has a bunch, right? Also some tattoos of birds or something?
Hm, let me think. Smelly blonde rocker girl had piercings. Hannelore has a bunch of ear stuff. Dora has the Ass of Fire. Tai has a pierced clit hood.
I still think septum piercings look gross, though. Belly button plz
Tai also has those 'pow' elbow tattoos, and used to have an anchor one as well.

I played that campaign. We spent the entire game on the run from various bounty-hunters and law-enforcement personnel until we became so powerful that the DM just ended the campaign because I had read the Book of Vile Darkness to no ill-effect and our cleric turned a town that we'd conquered into a theocracy dedicated to his deity.
Damn....Sounds like a crummy DM.
I know I'm probably missing something, but I'm not seeing how the comic's title relates to the comic material. Could someone potentially enlighten me?
I think it's a reference to Neuromancer. And being romantic.
I don't think neuromancer is in any way related to septum piercing, unless I missed something of significance in that novel. It seemed to be basically a re-write of "The A-Team" with a sentient AI and as much drug abuse as the plot of the original "A Team" should, realistically, have had.
Shadowrun is cyberpunk, and cyberpunk basically came from Neuromancer and William Gibson's other stuff. And Blade Runner.
"...when I see things like Shadowrun, the only negative thing I feel about it is that initial extreme revulsion at seeing my literary DNA mixed with elves. Somewhere somebody's sitting and saying 'I've got it! We're gonna do William Gibson and Tolkien!' Over my dead body! But I don't have to bear any aesthetic responsibility for it. I've never earned a nickel, but I wouldn't sue them. It's a fair cop. I'm sure there are people who could sue me, if they were so inclined, for messing with their stuff. So it's just kind of amusing." -Gibson
Again, that's all one step removed, as neither William Gibson nor Philip K Dick expresssly referenced septum piercing as a noteworthy aspect of any major character in the stories that were referenced to base the Shadowrun RPG on, and (to go a step further) sepfum piercing in the Shadowrun universe was never a significant indicator of any character or archetype.
It's just a low-level, cosmetic body modification in a world where limbs, eyes, and nervous systems are regularly replaced or rewired for greater efficiency.
The comic clearly references Shadowrun, and the title is therefore related to the association that the characters make, not the piercing itself.
[–]The English ModAdamBombTV 1
I don't have piercings, but I do have tattoos, and after I got my first one I instantly wanted more. I assume piercings are the same way?
Yup, both piercings and tattoos can get addictive.
It feels a bit like Jeph is speaking through Claire to justify this crazy new desire. It still feels out of character and now a little contrived, too.
OTOH, maybe we'll get more drama out of this? oh boy!
I don't know if it's super out of character for Claire, as many trans individuals enjoy body modifications as means of expression of body control. However, it does feel like Jeph is just speaking through the most appropriate character to justify his own desire rather than the character speaking.
That is a good point.
Panel 3 Claire looks incredibly adorable to me for some reason.
Possibly because she's adorable.
This is one of the few comics where we get a more character development for Claire beyond "I freak out internally when people say surprising things" :)

That’s it everybody, we’ve gone full feminist.
Implying that Jeph wasn' a feminist before?
If you're not a complete fucking sexist, you're a feminist. If you think women are people who deserve similar rights to men, you're a feminist. If you think women are actual people, you're goddamn feminist. I hate how reddit and the community at large have this idea that feminism means butch lesbians and men hating. Being a feminist just means you're into equality. Should be called equalists.
Although I must say I like bending myself and find Amon a bit of a hypocrite.
Being a feminist just means you're into equality. Should be called equalists.
Egalitarianism. IMO it's a pretty useless term because of how vague it is.
Also how is Amon a hypocrite? He lost his family to a bunch of firebending thugs! GO EQUALISTS.
He's a hypocrite because he wants to rid the world of bending by bloodbending people into submission. Plus, it's a bit wrong to do that to condemn the many based on the actions of the few. #NotAllBenders
Bloodbending? That's ridiculous. Bloodbending can only be done under a full moon, not to mention I've never seen Amon bend water. You benders are just trying to dirty Amon's name! #nonbendersmatter
Also I was trying to avoid Book 1 spoilers.
Oh, right, I forgot we live in a world where people haven't seen Korra. I think I understand Amon's views a bit better now, actually.
I would say that "equalist" is too vague, but "feminist" has gotten a bad reputation recently due to some extremists. I would say the only way to get your point across in a way that is incorruptible in meaning or association would be "gender equality advocate".
You are correct for classical feminism (of which I support). However, the term now implies 3rd-wave 'feminism', which is a supremacy movement.
I just skimmed through the Wikipedia article on third-wave feminism, and I didn't see anything about a supremacy movement. In fact, a lot of the prominent issues that they have on there I wholeheartedly support, e.g. reproductive rights and gender violence.
The problem with feminism is the same problem with men's rights activists. You mention one or the other, and a lot of people will automatically think of the extremists or the people who associate themselves with the movement while their actions vary wildly from those actually doing good and making progress.
Are there MRAs who do actual good work? I mean, obviously there are important issues that disproportionately affect men, and there are people working to combat problems in those areas (like erasure of male rape victims, etc), but I don't think those people tend to self-identify with the MRA movement (which is much newer and more on the fringe than feminism), and from what I can tell seems to consist primarily of whining about women and distorting statistics about child custody battles.
This is a genuine question, not just me being combative.
Are there MRAs who do actual good work?
Yes, we're called feminists. Third wave intersectionality is A Thing.
True (I'm an intersectional feminist also, and I get real tired of feminist bashing on reddit). I was more just pointing out that the people who do actual work aren't generally aligned with the "MRA" movement, even if they are human rights activists aiming to improve things for men.
Should be called equalists.
Yes, this.
Also true gender equality is technically impossible because men will never be able to get maternity leave.
Why not paternity leave? I think dads need time to bond with their newborns and help the moms take care of the babies.
Many societies have that and it is a good thing.
That's also something that feminists are rallying for (see the Lean In movement that Sheryl Sandberg is promoting).
I know plenty of men who had paternity leave, my husband included.
I can't tell if this was meant to be a joke or not. Like, "haha, men can't get maternity leave...because that's for women! Paternity leave is for men."
I don't understand how the word empowering is an inherently feminist term. I've heard it used in many other contexts.
