Congress: Classify requiring a driver's license and personal vehicle as discrimination →

PETITION: Classify requiring a driver’s license and personal vehicle as discrimination.

What struck me as especially intriguing was the almost always present: “We do not discriminate on basis of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, disability….”

Disability.

According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, this shouldn’t be happening.

Yet it has, and it continues to happen. Cars are not always reliable. They break down. Some folks cannot afford to purchase a car, vehicle insurance, and keep up with maintenance. There are other options that many people already use: walking, biking, and taking public transportation – which are, incidentally, all better for the environment

.More importantly, however: requiring that someone have a driver’s license and vehicle to get to work is ableist and classist.. It discounts the work I, and so many others, have put in. It is discriminatory. And it needs to stop.

It’s time to call requiring a driver’s license and car what it really is: discrimination.
