How someone eats their toast behind closed doors is none of my business. I just don't need to be down the park with my kids and then have to explain to them why those two men over there are eating cold toast.

Brits will often let toast go cold too – so the butter doesn’t melt too much – and that would get some odd stares as well

????? The best part of toast is when the butter is all melty and then it mixes with the jam.

My step dad likes to burn his toast on purpose as he prefers the taste.

Then he let's it go a little cold, puts butter on it so it doesn't melt and eats it in the car.

No idea why he burns it but he says that he let's it go a little cold first as he doesn't like soggy toast which I can actually understand even if I don't like it.

Burger ... vans? You have vans driving around bringing everyone burgers? Do you just wave them down as they drive past?

So they don't have ice, but is the toast warm? Or do they have buns for the burgers?

It's probably something the author heard about from a friend of a friend who knew one British person who idiosyncratically liked cold toast. Or else entirely made up to fill the word count.

[–]strugleArl of Shredcliff [スコア非表示]  (3子コメント)

[–]strugleArl of Shredcliff [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

BBC America is just a distribution system for BBC content with a slightly different news program, it's more BBC than not BBC. Also, there are several other people in the thread saying they like cold toast.

Nah it's not. A lot of the content isn't even BBC, it's ITV or Channel 4 stuff.

There are non Brits saying they like cold toast too. It's an idiosyncratic thing, not a cultural difference.

Not British, but cold toast with butter is a Christmas Day treat for me. We have a big breakfast & make too much toast & then end up having the cold leftover slices later on in the afternoon between breakfast & dinner. Both cold & hot toast have their respective advantages & disadvantages

Brit here, I think it's idiosyncratic on my part, but I like biting through butter on toast, not butter infused toast. So, "cold" is an exaggeration, but I let it cool a little bit before spreading the butter. I also keep the butter in the fridge most of the time.

nah, it's a thing. some people like the butter slightly harder, it tastes different when it isn't fully melted and still a spread.

Yeah no. British here and we don't intentionally cool toast as far as I know. Toast does go cold very quickly, so I think that's why 'hot toast' is a common little phrase, cause it's more evocative of that first bite.

You know those toast rack things that exist but nobody ever owns or uses? They're designed to cool toast quickly (by keeping the slices apart) and, for some unknown reason, avoid them sitting in steam from other slices. This causes toast-racked toast to get really dry.

That's also the reason why nobody owns or uses them.

People became desensitized to retard as an insult. As far as insults go, accusing someone of being autistic seems to be on the same level as accusing someone of being a virgin. As long as people react to it (which this guy did) then it will probably continue to be used.

[–]_lilPoundcakeI ATEN'T DED [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

I give up. What I meant was, I didn't know it was possible for toast to be cold. I assumed that when you leave toast on a table, it turns back into soft bread. I've seen toast for the past 23 years that has become cold but I never touched it. When we were talking about meals that people have, I thought that bread can only be sliced and soft or hot and crunchy. Now I know that toast can get cold. Thanks reddit TIL.

Of course toast can physically become cold, just like you can, for example, pop a beer in the microwave before you drink it.

I purposely let the toast cool before eating/adding anything to it. We exist.

I like you because I do the same thing. I think nobody should be judged by the things that they eat but it is clear that we are the civilized people here. They are saying things like "I only eat hot toast" but all I can hear is "barbarbarbar".

Someone finally said it, about time, hopefully this will clear up any confusion about why cool toast is eaten.

Whaaaat but butter infused toast is the best.

Why ever is that relevant? I don't think anybody anywhere intentionally cools down toast. But it goes cold quickly and so is kind of a known thing in contrast to freshly grilled hot toast.
The fridge thing was just emphasising that cold toast doesn't turn back into bread.

Reminds me of people who refer to hot dishes that have cooled down to room temperature as "ice-cold." As in "you're going to eat that soup? It's ice cold!"

[–]doubleheresyThis is good for Reddit points

Well, yeah. Things that are meant to be served hot are supposed to be eaten when still hot, and they often become gross when cold.

It's not cold though. It's room temperature. That's the only point I'm making.

[–]doubleheresyThis is good for Reddit points

Right, but it's cold compared to the initial temperature of the dish.

My initial point was taking issue with the use of the phrase "ice cold" specifically, which is a totally irrational pet peeve of mine. Not the use of the word cold"

In my opinion if you call something "ice cold" you are definitely implying that it's well below room temperature but that's not how it's commonly used in regards to food.

My real question about this is: If everyone is using 'autistic' as the standard idiot insult, does that mean I can start saying 'retarded' again? Or do I have to wait for public denouncement of the word 'autistic' as an insult first?

I feel like when I take toast out of the toaster it gets cold almost immediately.

Not like refrigerator level cold, but like an unsatisfying lukewarm.

I think I might have defective toast.

You should speak with a toastologist about your toast problems. Nobody should have to suffer cold toast.

Maybe it just needs to be re-calibrated. Any certified technician can tune up your toaster.

[–]cevapi_fingerswould you like ajvar with that?

If you're using spongy presliced bread that's just a problem you're going to have to deal with. Now, you want good toast that will melt a stick of butter and keep going, get a nice loaf of real bread, cut it lengthwise like a sub, and put it in a panini press.

Why the fuck can't you eat toast right away? Is a slice of bread too much for you to eat in 20 minutes?

Haha, I also like that he basically tells the guy that he should always eat his toast right after cooking it so that he doesn't have to conceptualize a new idea.

This is something I actually discovered a few days ago, and it still boggles my mind.

As far as I can tell, it seems that Brits and us Muricans/Canuck like toast for different reasons. They prefer the crunchiness, and consider the heat a mere byproduct, while we see things the other way around.

Which I guess is legitimate, but "cold toast" still seems like an oxymoron to me.

I think I figured out the Dr. Seuss book. Warm toast is butter-side up, cold toast is butter-down.

So in East Asia people call any sliced bread "toast" whether they've been toasted or not. One of my dad's friend flew from Taiwan and went to stay at a host family. They asked if he would like anything to eat. He didn't want to bother the host family to make him a meal so he said "French toast is fine" after spotting sliced French bread on the counter. He wasn't expecting then to open the fridge and make him actual French toast at midnight.
