No Kurt gave me an erection before then.

Which is weird because Bare Naked Ladies were way more popular before then. If anything we're becomin more conservative.

Ya because pop culture in the 1960's didn't involve experimenting with narcotics and having drug fueled unprotected sex or anything..

why couldn't i live in the 60s ugh.

There's probably a hippy commune with aging hippies somewhere near you.

I remember American pop culture in the 90's having Madonna, Britney Spears and other pop stars that used there sexuality to sell records. Nirvana and the grunge movement weren't as huge as some people say it was now, yes it existed but a lot of kids now think that everyone listened to it and was obsessed with it; which was not true. I feel like a 14 year old made this meme.

Nevermind was their first album to reach #1, and that was in '92, and Cobain died in '94. They were only relevant to pop culture for 2 years, so I have no idea how they could completely define a decade.

N Sync was popular and active in the 90s for a longer period of time than Nirvana.

In my opinion, Nirvana and things like it did define a significant portion of music in the 90s. A lot of groups and trends can be defined by their relation to grunge. For example, I feel like the bubblegum pop movement of the late 90s was a direct reaction to the gloominess of grunge.

    You mean stuff like Aqua?

On the early end. Barbie Girl was like 1997, right? I was thinking more like the boy band/girl group/teen idol thing from 98-2001 or so.

    Nirvana was also, y'know, COUNTER-CULTURE

Bob Dylan said the same thing about his time period. The most popular songs were songs like "Look At The Puppy In The Window" which was from a movie. But Dylan and The Beatles stood the test of time because they were so good.

    German pop culture:

    1920s

    1940s

    2000s

    2010s

    smh

    Tokio hotel in the 50s?

I had a genuine brainfart there

I wanted to add more decades, but ended up skipping to Tokio hotel and forgot to change the year

Haha, that's what I thought but I was wondering if it was a new meme I was unaware of.

I might not like Miley, but that's some extreme cherry-picking.

Which gets even worse if you consider that Frank Sinatra had ties with the Mafia and Kurt Cobaine was a known drug-abuser and kind of an asshole.

But see Frank wore hats, so none of that matters.

This guy ever heard of Maddona?

Ahh the peak of american pop culture! A white guy in a hat!!

Stupid female women, with their estrogen and whatnot.

I wish today's popstars would give private concerts for mafia bosses in prestigious cuban hotels.

You mean the guy who killed himself ? Great role model there

not to mention the heavy drinker before him

    linked to organized crime nonetheless

Seriously? You're going to attack the depressed guy who committed suicide and not the racist misogynist with mafia ties?

    racist? what?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgvfTXixjDI

and i can't find any valid source of his misogyny either

This seems fucked up. He obviously was suffering from depression and other mental illnesses. He can still be a good role model (he might not be though, not sure if he shot up heroin all the time or not) even though he suffered from mental illnesses.

He was a disaster on his later days, he didn't take much care for his daughter. Former pitchfork writer Chris Ott has a very good video on how complex this thing is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpFPuS1o9d0

Making good music doesn't make him a good role model

I'm not saying he was a role model, I'm saying that's it's dumb to discount someone as a role model because they had an uncontrollable mental illness.

That seems like a pretty good reason to discount someone as a role model. Not that we should demonize mental illness, but that's obviously not a model one should follow...

If someone was still able to act as a good, smart human being and have a mental illness, I feel like they could still be a role model. A guy like Robin Williams could still be a role model even though he suffered from depression.

I still wouldn't consider him a role model in any way other than musically.

Yup. Great message for the kids. Jeff Buckley, who went swimming where he shouldn't, is also a great influence.

off topic, but Miley is trying WAY too hard

Nirvana wasn't as popular during their time. For some reason, they're more popular now than they ever were, it seems like.

Uh, Nirvana was extremely popular in their time. I don't know how this myth got started that Nirvana didn't get popular until after Cobain died, but it's not true.

They were popular, they weren't the biggest band ever like some kids like to believe

I think part of the disconnect comes from kids who were too young to remember the '90s growing up in the '00s watching a lot of vh1 clip shows or listening to their local "alternative" rock station. There are some people, whether they're working for Rolling Stone or some other publication that covers music, who see the '90s as the last gasp of the glory days of rock in America and in trying to relive it inflate the importance of bands like Nirvana to a degree. Nirvana was a huge band but it's treated by some people as the single biggest band of the decade, that it wholly defined the era. If you look at the highest-selling albums in the US by year during Nirvana's (and alternative rock in general) ascendancy you'll see Rhythm Nation, Mariah Carey's self-titled debut, Billy Ray Cyrus, The Bodyguard Original Soundtrack, and The Lion King Soundtrack.

Yes, they were big during their time, but Kurt's death skyrocketed their popularity, and now they've reached the legend status amongst teens.
