So I'm not sure if there's anything that I can do in this situation but I'd like to know if there are any steps I can take to get the neighbors across the street from me out of the neighborhood.
I've rented a house on my street for 2 years. When we moved in, the neighbors across the street from us in a duplex were an old lady and an old man. About six months ago, they were both evicted so the owner of the house could remodel. After the house was remodeled they raised the rent to about $200 over what duplexes are currently renting for in this neighborhood. The house stood empty for a while, then about 7-10 college age kids moved in to both sides of the duplex.
I am not a "nosy" neighbor. Where I live isn't the best area, we have our fair share of drunks running around and fist fights but for the most part people keep to themselves. There were a couple of red flags to begin with when these people moved in. To begin with, the day they moved in while I was out walking my dog, one of the guys comes up to me and asks where he can buy weed. I tell him I don't know (I do, if that's important, but I don't know this guy at all) then tells me he has some if I need any. I tell him I'll keep that in mind.
Next comes the parties. I don't really care if people have parties but they have one every single night. Between 20-30 people coming and going, drinking vodka out of the bottle in the front yard, smoking weed in the front yard, screaming in the front yard, speeding up and down the street. I've never called the cops on one of these parties because you just don't do that here, and as long as they stay on their side of the street, I don't really care.
Another thing that is concerning is that there are two babies in the house under the age of 2, and at least two of the people that live there and party there are in high school, as I see them getting on and off the school bus. I've also seen some kids from the local skatepark over there smoking weed who look to be in middle school.
We've also had people come up to us in our yard from across the street asking us for money, asking us for cigarettes, getting pissed when we tell them no. I'll give money to someone downtown if they ask. I will not give someone money who comes into my yard.
Next comes the violence. About two weeks after they moved in, one of my neighbors got shot on his front porch. I'm not sure if they were involved or not, I didn't think so at all in the beginning. The police said that it was a suicide and that may be true. However, I was outside at the time and know for certain that there were two gunshots from a small handgun when it happened. Most people who kill themselves don't need to shoot themselves twice, but I guess it could happen.
Then, about another week later, there was a fight at the store down the road, and the neighbors were involved, and a guy shot a gun into the air.
Then about three weeks ago, there was a drive by shooting directed at the neighbors house, two sets of seven shots. One person got hit, not killed. The police did come this time, walked around asking questions (nobody would talk) picking up shellcasing, and left. The neighbors had another party the next day.
Last saturday there was another drive by shooting directed at their house. This time it was between 30 - 40 shots, rapid fire. Apparently whoever was shooting lost control of the gun because one or possibly more of the bullets hit my next door neighbors house, which is about 10 feet away from my house. During this shooting the neighbors (who it was directed at) were having a party at the time and as soon as it happened and was over obviously everyone at the party who didn't live there left very quickly. The police showed up about five minutes later, the neighbors told the police that nobody was at the house except for them. Once again the police hung out for a bit, picked up shell casings, questioned people. This time my next door neighbor and my roommate did tell the police what they saw. The cops told my next door neighbor they were going to come back in the morning to try and find the bullets that hit his house, but they never did.
I do not give a shit if people want to drink and do drugs
I do not give a shit if people want to have parties.
I don't even give a shit if they want to sell drugs.
But I have a fucking problem with gun violence going on outside my front door.
These are the steps we've taken so far, and the results.
Called the landlord of the neighbors house. Was told that they can't do anything without a police report. We tried to get a copy of the police reports, and were told that the only person who could have access to the reports was the owner of the house. The police in this county are not required to send a report to the landlord. Called the landlord back, no response.
Called DSS, because of the babies in the house. Made an anonymous report so I'm not sure what the outcome will be of that.
My sister is giving me a set of 6 high dollar video cameras to put up around our house today, although I'm worried that it will draw attention to us, and I'm also worried they'll be destroyed.
She's also offered to give us an alarm system, not sure of the company, but basically it's one of those that tells you when the front door is open. I guess that's helpful although I don't really need an alarm to let me know if a bullet comes through the window. In the event of a robbery it could be useful.
We also have our own guns, but I'm not really willing to advertise it to anyone in the neighborhood since that makes it more likely for people to mess with us anyways, and they aren't really helpful in this situation either. If someone enters our home we can shoot them although I'd really rather not.
At this point, me, my so, my roommate, my next door neighbor, and the store owner down the street have come to the agreement that we have to get these people out of this neighborhood, we just aren't sure how to go about doing so. We've never had this kind of shit happen around here until they moved in. If there is anything else I can do please let me know.
Edit: I forgot to mention that obviously we'd like to get them out without drawing attention to ourselves
Edit 2: I'm in South Carolina
