The bournemouth situation is what bothers me the most. Thats actually the amazing thing about pro/rel in europe(although I have some issues with it) - you can have small market teams make it all the way to the top and compete with the big boys. I'm not really an NASL or MLS fanboy, but this bothers me because even if MLS out monopolizes NASL, I'd like the eventual pyramid to not require all teams to have a population base of 2 mil. Basically excludes quite a few potential canadian markets, which severely irritates me. This seems a bit ridiculous.

I kind of agree with this. Why population restrictions?

Can someone explain to me how USSF changing D1 and D2 standards multiple times in a few years is not collusion? Seems like standards like these should only change every decade or so.

Well, collusion implies some sort of cooperation or conspiracy with MLS, which changing standards doesn't necessarily signify. But also, I don't recall the last time D1 standards were changed. Multiple times in a few years...when was the other?

[–]Minnesota UnitedCampaignExpert 1

About 6 years ago the current format, about 18 months ago it was revised for first time since then. This story implies that it changed again this year.

Who votes on these changes? I would assume the USSF and it's MLS and USL held board, am I not correct? Maybe not d1 but d2 has changes a couple of times in recent memory.

From what I understand there is the board of directors of USSF. Some people represent different parts like youth soccer, pro leagues, players, etc. The pro leagues board is Don garber and the CEO of USL who's name I can't remember. They basically call the shots for MLS,USL,NASL,and NWSL. So that basically means NASL really has no say in how the USSF run things.

From another thread there is a sub board (professional league board) where Men's D1 gets X members, Men's D2 gets Y members where Y < X,Men's D3 get Z members where Z < Y. I know women's D1 gets votes and is on board (professional league board) but not sure how many votes they get.

That board votes in members for USSF board.

The Professional Council includes MLS, NASL, USL, and NWSL. They elect 8 commissioners with at least 1 commissioner from each league. The Commissioners then elect their representatives to serve on the US Soccer Board of Directors.

Currently, Garber (MLS) and Papadakis (USL) are the Professional Council's representatives on the Board of Directors.

Additionally, the Professional Council is the one that makes recommendations regarding changes to the professional tier requirements.

Edit: Add link to professional council

Thats what I mean MLS,USL,and NWSL are basically all of the same then that leaves NASL so most of the votes would go towards MLS favor.

The D2 standards were first set up in 2010 or 11, following the split between the USL and NASL. They actually worked to stifle the USL's bid for D2 at the time.

[–]Ottawa FuryFuryFury 0

So the USSF is known to arbitrarily change standards to thwart a specific league?

I don't believe that was the intention, but it was the effect.

[–]Ottawa FuryFuryFury 0

The standards changed just as the two leagues separated, giving one a clear advantage, but it wasn't intentional?

There was a reason why the standards were put into place; the USL happened to not be able to meet them. It was not a conscious effort to screw over the USL, but rather to install reasonable standards for a D2 league.

[–]Ottawa FuryFuryFury 0

It appears that the USSF is really bad at setting standards and changes them frequently at opportune times for certain entities.

[–]Oklahoma CityOrlandoCity-Fan 0

NASL was deeply involved in setting the D2 standards in 2010 with the likely purpose (1) to keep USL from qualifying and (2) to justify the standards with future owners.

Can anyone show me an actual filed lawsuit, or proof that one has been or will be filed?

[–]Tampa Bay RowdiesEquinsuOcha 2

I think it was a letter of complaint with intent to file, sent to Sunil. Essentially, lawyerese for "yo homie, check yourself". No lawsuit has been filed yet, to my knowledge.

So here's something that sticks out for me: we kept hearing that the Eddies didn't count for the USSF's requirement of teams in three time zones because Edmonton is in Canada, but the article points to Edmonton's stadium capacity as a reason why the NASL required a waiver to remain a D2 team. My question for Kartik: Which is it? Does Edmonton count for USSF divisional sanctioning or not?

[–]Kartik Krishnaiyer, former NASL Director of CommunicationsKartik_Krishnaiyer[S] 0

It does as a "guest" team. My opinion is that time zone thing is bunk. By allowing guest teams NASL is in FOUR time zones next year (including PR and EDM) so you cannot allow guest teams and then say "oh but they don't count on this one requirement." Again USSF rules are arbitrary and often HIGHLY illogical.

[–]United StatesSCarolinaSoccerNut 1

There's also this problem for the NASL.

Like @kkfla737, also hearing that NASL far from a united ship in its current course. Him on the league's case for D1: http://worldsoccertalk.com/2015/08/31/nasl-pursuing-litigation-against-us-soccer-heres-how-it-might-play-out/

I'm not surprised. I'm sure most of the smaller teams are content to sit back and play where they're at currently, as far as cost goes. I think the big spenders are the ones pushing for more recognition.

What would be really interesting would be if there is a USL/NASL split, again, and the teams that have D1 ambition join NASL while those who would prefer the costs of D2 become USL.

US Soccer has always been in the hands of the MLS, USSF is just a puppet, MLS pulls the strings, it's time FIFA stepped in and told USSF to sort it's shit out and stop being corrupt.
