Mexican Riviera

Mexico has thousands of miles of Pacific coast, stretching from its northwestern border with California to its southern border with Guatemala. Most of this coast was populated with small fishing villages until the 1920's, when a new road system brought tourists. Luxury hotels sprung up in Acapulco, followed by Puerto Vallarta, which gained international fame in the 1960's, when Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton filmed "Night of the Iguana" there and bought a seaside villa.

The Mexican government aggressively promoted the building of resorts along the Pacific coast during the 1970's, dubbing the stretch between Puerto Vallarta down to Manzanillo the "Costa de Oro," or "Gold Coast." But the entire coast, known as the Mexican Riviera in the U.S. cruise industry, is famous for pristine beaches set against stunning cliffs, coves and verdant jungle landscape.

The cruise industry actually owes a debt of gratitude to the Mexican Riviera. The scenic, tourist-friendly ports of call provided the backdrop for television's "The Love Boat" in the 1970's and brought towns such as Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas to the attention of Americans everywhere.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Puerto Vallarta was sleepy no more; its transformation into an international resort had begun. Then director John Huston chose the village as the location for his film "Night of the Iguana," starring Richard Burton. Today, the city has its own "Gringo Gulch," a haunt of the rich and famous. Travelers are also drawn by its climate, its excellent shopping - which offers great values on leather goods, jewelry, and handicrafts - and mile after mile of palm-lined beaches.

Puerto Vallarta is known for its quaint cobblestone streets, "old world" charm, and thriving nightlife. The walkway along the bay is lined with sculptures, many of which are said to bring good luck to those who touch them. Puerto Vallarta's beaches, especially the unfortunately named Playa de los Muertos, are known for great swimming and other water sports. But, it's the jungle beach experience that sets Puerto Vallarta apart from other Mexican Riviera resorts. Take a boat trip to Yelapa Beach across the Bay of Banderas, tucked at the base of a jungle-covered mountain. A short hike takes you through lush tropical vegetation to a waterfall. You'll think you're on "Fantasy Island."

The Malecon
The city's popular boardwalk by the beach is lined with shops, restaurants and artists selling their wares. Begin your stroll at the Los Milenos sculpture by Mathis Lidice and head southward.

Las Caletas
Accessible only by boat, this secluded cove on the southern shores of Banderas Bay is surrounded by lush jungle and features pristine beaches for an exclusive private paradise.

Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe
The cathedral features a gilded crown, a replica of one worn by Carlota, empress of Mexico. A 1995 earthquake damaged the crown and sculptor Octavio Gonzales created its replacement.

Tequila Hacienda
Discover the fascinating process of tequila making, from its origins in the blue agave cactus to your glass, and sample Puerto Vallarta's finest at Hacienda Doña Engracia.

Yelapa
The tiny town and crescent-shaped beach of the same name is situated in a cove off Banderas Bay, south of Puerto Vallarta. Sleepy and remote, the only way to get there is by boat.

Isla Marietas
This series of uninhabited islands offers kayaking, snorkeling or scuba diving around the periphery of the islands where you can bird-watch as it is a haven for all matter of winged species.

Dolphin Encounter
Get acquainted with new underwater friends at the Dolphin Adventure Center. Kids can kiss the dolphins and meet their curious babies, while adults may indulge in a once-in-a-lifetime belly ride!

Outdoor Adventure
Become one with nature as you zipline and rappel through the Mexican jungle, view the countryside by powerful ATV, or go kayaking and snorkeling in the warm waters of Puerto Vallarta.

Mazatlan, Mexico

Lying just below the Tropic of Cancer, Mazatlan boasts a superb year-round climate. Mazatlan, a name that means "Place of the Deer," sits on a peninsula at the feet of the rugged Sierra Madre, and the Cerro de Neveria - "Ice Box Hill" - divides the area's rocky Pacific beaches from the broad, white-sand beaches beloved by visitors. The climate, the beaches, and the world-class sportfishing have turned this commercial fishing port into one of the world's top resort destinations. Yet while visitors flock to the markets, bathe in the sun, or marvel at the airborne ballet of the famed Papantla dancers, Mazatlan remains one of Mexico's major Pacific ports - the city exports over 40 million pounds of shrimp every year.

Mazatlan is not only a booming resort town, but also the largest port on Mexico's Pacific coast. Surfing, sailing and scuba diving are popular activities, and the town is a haven for sports fishing enthusiasts. Stroll along Mazatlan's 10-mile seaside promenade, and stop in a local cafe for a snack of shrimp tacos and beer. Dozens of merchants sell jewelry, woven belts and trinkets along the promenade.

More heavy-duty shopping opportunities can be found in town, in an area called the Golden Zone. Make sure to visit the historic "old town" section of the city, for its cathedral, marketplace and the central square, called Plaza Republica. Do try to take one of the open-air taxis, called "Pulmonias," up the steep hillsides for a breathtaking panoramic view of Mazatlan's bays and several small islands, and the legendary Sierra Madre mountain range rising behind the town.

Cathedral Basilica & Plaza Revolución
Admire the Moorish and Gothic architecture at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, then head across the way to the popular Plaza Revolución with its charming gazebo and street vendors.

Teatro Angela Peralta
The Italian-style theatre, a national landmark loving restored to its 19th century splendor, is home to a concert hall, galleries, an art school and a highly regarded conservatory of music and dance.

Golden Zone
The tourist zone, known as Zona Dorado (Golden Zone) boasts numerous four and five star hotels with private beaches, shops and restaurants, and palm-lined beaches.

Stone Island
Stone Island is less crowded and not as developed as the mainland, a haven of sunshine and ocean, with glistening sand, crashing waves, and rustling palm trees and plentiful coconuts.

Cactus Island High Divers
High-flying divers off perform acrobatic and dangerous plunges into rocky surf from a 59-foot high ledge.

Copala-Concordia
In the lush Sierra Madre foothills, the twin colonial towns are reminiscent of yesteryear as artisans craft furniture and pottery, and cobblestones and colorful red roof tiles dot the streets.

From hiking and kayaking at UNESCO-designated Deer Island to ziplining through the treetops and riding horseback along the beach, Mazatlan offers exciting adventures outdoors to suit anyone's style.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Millennia ago, Cabo San Lucas was part of the Mexican mainland. Then a massive rupture of the San Andreas Fault sent the waters of the Pacific crashing into the newly formed depression, creating the Sea of Cortez and the Baja Peninsula. Lying at the very tip of Baja, where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez, Cabo San Lucas - or "Cabo" - is one of the premier resort destinations in the Western Hemisphere. Swim in the transparent waters, marvel at the wealth of marine life, relax on one of the white-sand beaches or try your hand at some of the finest sportfishing in the world.

This party town on the southernmost tip of Baja California provides a stunning juxtaposition of sea, desert and mountains. Cabo has grown like the federal budget in the past few decades, with new resorts along the beach called "the corridor," frequented by celebrities from Jessica Simpson to John Mayer.

Aside from enjoying the beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife, water sports, such as snorkeling, scuba diving and parasailing, are popular and plentiful activities. The marlin fishing is legendary, and championship golf courses are noteworthy, as well. Cabo's large dock has several shops and open-air stalls, where merchants sell everything from woven baskets to shell necklaces and coral jewelry. The town itself offers few exciting highlights, other than rocker Sammy Hagar's "Cabo Wabo Cantina," where the mostly American crowd goes wild nightly.

Cabo's signature landmark is El Arco ("The Arch"), a rock formation at the tip of "Land's End," where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. A boat trip there is a must, if only to come face to face with the hundreds of noisy sea lions who reside on the rock formations. Cruise lines offer a myriad of excursions around El Arco, from glass-bottom boats to catamaran sails. If you have time, hire a water taxi to take you to "Lovers Beach," the only beach in the world bounded by two different oceans. A whale watching excursion is another "must do," if you are there between December and March, when thousands of California gray whales and other species make their annual migration from colder climates.

Note: Your ship will anchor in Cabo San Lucas and use launches to transport all passengers ashore.

El Arco (the Arch) & Lover's Beach
This majestic rock formation, carved by the ocean currents, is the most recognized landmark in Cabo San Lucas. Located at Land's End, around the corner from Lover's Beach, it is a haven for sea lions.

San José del Cabo
Stroll through the historical center of San Jose del Cabo and immerse yourself in the Spanish colonial character and charm preserved in the 18th-century architecture and cultural traditions.

Médano Beach
Cabo's most popular beach and main swimming area, Medano encompasses the east side of the harbor. An abundance of water sports, restaurants and street vendors add lively local color.

Todos Santos
Located on the southern Baja Peninsula, this charming paradise lies between the desert and the Sierra Laguna mountain range. Quaint village life, abundant agriculture, and miles of unspoiled beaches abound.

Snorkeling
Offering some of the best snorkeling in the Mexican Riviera, Cabo San Lucas is a marine sanctuary that's home to a wide variety of colorful, thriving sea life just waiting to be encountered.

Dolphin Encounter

"During Sean's meditation I felt the Holy Spirit gently rock me back and forth. However, it was in Susan Shumsky's guided meditation that I had a most magnificent experience. The Holy Spirit began rocking my body back and forth uncontrollably and I began to have vivid visions. It was very difficult for me to come back to the room. I wanted to stay in bliss forever. When I did finally manage to open my eyes, I continued to rock. I rocked for several hours afterwards-all during lunch and into the next presentation. "Our Captain took us first to Lover's Beach and Los Arcos explaining each feature and some history. We got up close to the Seal colony near land's end. Then we took off in search of whales! Our Captain had a heads-up from another Captain that some whales had been spotted a few miles north in the Sea of Cortez. Shortly we came upon a group of small craft that were shadowing some whales. Just as we got close, a baby whale jumped completely out of the water. The baby was swimming along with its mother and rolling and slapping its tail. Because there were several small boats of various kinds watching we all kept a ways away from the whales so as not to sppok them. Just about the time that many of the other small boats turned back, the large catamaran with many of our fellows in Oneness showed up and although we had seen the papa whale some ways off, he came over and put himself between the large catamaran and mama and the baby. The whales picked up speed and for a while we had some difficulty staying near them. But, then the large catamaran left and papa let us get real close to himself and mama and baby. All this time Victoria had been "singing" to the whales and now the whales slowed down and we were right next to them. Papa went right under us, but he didn't come up until he was clear of us.
