    I organised a bike ride with the /r/Melbourne Subreddit a few years ago. It was great fun. I would have ridden by myself if no one else came and still would have enjoyed it, went along the full Capital Trail loop which I had never done before. But, about a dozen people came along and we had a blast.

    I never caught up with any of them again, but it was still a Reddit meet up and it was rad.

              The problem with Reddit meet ups isn't that people from a website meet up, the problem is that the website is generic and big. For example when people from a smaller site dedicated to something they have in common (like a Norwegian hunting forum or something) there is a common interest and locality. Reddit doesn't have much of those kind of subreddits. They have /r/hunting and /r/Norway.

              Wouldn't a meet-up in /r/hunting automatically fill in the locality requirement though? I mean... People are not gonna fly to another country for a meet-up. Anyone meeting up for a /r/hunting meet-up in Norway will be Norwegian, making it no different from a meet-up from /r/NorwegianHunting.

              A sub such as /r/AskReddit or /r/TIFU wouldn't have anything in common because it has no theme, but a sub with a theme would have a reason to organize a meet-up. For example, a sub for a game would organize a LAN party.

              The reason why meet-ups fail is because they are usually organized by locality (They form a meet-up in /r/Norway) instead of by topic (/r/Hunting). Locality is always a must, there's no need to make a meet-up centered around it.
