I spent my weekend doing the single nerdiest thing possible - meeting Redditors. It was actually kind of interesting because of how unintentional most of it was. I've been looking for friends, so I went to a women's Reddit meet-up where I was ferociously under-dressed and under-make upped and felt kind of self-conscious, but on the other hand, the food was good. Then, I went around borrowing camping gear from people who said I could borrow theirs because - and I quote - "you moderate a history subreddit so you must be trustworthy." It brought a tear to my eye.

I also had a snowcone this weekend. I like snowcones.

Sometimes i feel like the one person whose normal friends use reddit too, instead of finding friends over reddit.

There's nothing wrong with making friends on and over Reddit. It just always makes me laugh when I meet Reddit people in real life.

My friends use reddit. The day they find my username is the day I make a new account!

My Reddit-using friends know my username. They're more than welcome to slog through the mod actions and conversations here that are my post history.

I have no shame, basically.

How can anyone actually like snowcones? They just taste like disappointment.

To be fair, this was a snowball which has much creamier ice. She also slathered the flavouring in there. Also, when it's 96 degrees out, I'll take my ice cup and be happy no matter what it tastes like.

Was it from a raspa stand? Mmmm so cold and syrupy and artificial. So good.

I don't think so. It was from a little truck, though.

Damn, I wish I didn't live in the middle of nowhere. A meetup with members of a cool sub sounds like fun.

Everything in my life is shaping up - I'm in my second week of the senior year of undergrad, looking at law schools with a good GPA and a great LSAT score, I'm expected to receive IRB approval to run my thesis study within a couple weeks, my hobbies are thriving, my finances are stable, and my classes are all interesting and insightful.

In spite of that, I feel completely lost. I've recently started falling into self-destructive old habits, like drinking excessively (I know, I know, I say this in the premier alcoholic subreddit), restricting food intake to unhealthy levels...my friends and family members are going through rough times, too, so I'm spending most of my time supporting them and not really working through this sort of stifling defeatism I'm developing. I don't know how to explain it, I guess.

On a more BadHistory note, I've been getting more into American Civil War history, and wow, casualty figures are insanely off. Some battles - skirmishes, really - one side will say they lost 1 man and had 11 wounded, and the other side will say they killed at least 70 or whatever. Things get worse with skirmishes against or involving the American Indians, since they seem to have not had ant accurate records kept in a lot of cases. It's getting hard figuring out how on earth to decipher this kind of thing and parse what the hell happened back then.

[–]anthropology_nerdGuns, Germs, and Generalizations 5ポイント6ポイント  (1子コメント)

I know, I know I say this in the premiere alcoholic subreddit.

Yeah we like to joke about that. I would feel awful if our flippant regard for alcohol abuse negatively influenced anyone's life or normalized the behavior.

Concerned mod statement of the day: Don't self medicate, friends.

[–]TheGreatDainius 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Haha, thanks anthro, but no worries - this sub's habits will never seem normalized ;)

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

I understand where you're coming from. It's easy and sometimes comforting to go into self-destructive tendencies. I do it all the time, and it's really hard to get back out of it. What I think is important to remember, though, is to keep an eye on the outside world and remember that there is a place for you in it. Focus on school and law schools and your thesis study. Remember how important those things are, and how they don't work as well if you're drunk or starving or dead. Feeling lost is common, and it can be hard to find your way again, so sometimes, you need to give yourself a push. Focus on what you have to do, and you'll find that it's easier to get back out. If that doesn't work, we're always here to help.

[–]TeeSeventyTwo 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

Well you already sound very busy, but staying busy and being social was what I did when I thought my drinking might have been getting a bit excessive.

Maybe work out more instead of restricting your eating so much. That'll kill two birds in one stone: it'll make you busier, and also allow you to keep your health up while eating what you want.

Finished reading Apostles of Disunion. Amazes me how all the confederates after the war were so fast to change their tune. One second slavery is a cornerstone of the confederation and the next it was only built on grievances of the state that are never identified and are still kinda about slavery.

[–]mudsill 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

If I remember the book right, part of the reason the secession commissioners were so open about the slavery thing (or I guess even more open about it than most secessionists already were) was because the audience was much more receptive to the idea of fighting for slavery. They didn't have to cloak the message in a bunch of PR spin.

[–]georgeguy007High Chartist Chancellor (was elected tho, like Hitler) 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

The thing that stood out to me was how afraid these white people were of the slaves. They were fighting for slavery cause they were afraid free slaves (which Lincoln said he never wanted to do in the south) were going to enact their vengeance on their past owners (and their white woman of course).

Hey everyone! I got a kitty! He is a three legged cat named Hector. He was shot by his previous owners, then taken in by a rescue and he had to have his leg amputated. He's only been without for a couple months, but he's getting along well! He's only 11 months old and he's a huge fluffy baby. I don't how his previous owners could have been so horrible as to shoot him because he's such a loving, cuddly cat.

I wish I could upload the video of him walking on to imgur because it's adorable. He just hops along. Also, he loooooves ear scratches on the side without a leg, but he goes to lean into the ear scratches and just falls over.

[–]TheGreatDainius 4ポイント5ポイント  (2子コメント)

Adorable, but why on earth did the old owners shoot him?! Did they think he was a home invaded wearing a really good disguise or something, or was it more accidental?

[–]RoNPlayerJames Truslow Adams was a Communist 5ポイント6ポイント  (0子コメント)

WHO ARE YOU AND WHY ARE YOU DRESSED AS MY CAT?!?!?

[–]_sekhmet_Lady of Slaughter and She Who Reviews Chairs 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

I have no idea. Hr was just rescued from a house with a whole bunch of other pets. His story wasn't even the worst from the cat rescue. There were a bunch who were found who they think were being used as bait animals for dog fighting.

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

Aw, he's adorable! I'm glad you took him in because he looks so wonderful!

[–]_sekhmet_Lady of Slaughter and She Who Reviews Chairs 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

He is. He sat in my lap all night while I did homework, attacking the pages every time I turned them. He's also terrified of doors, so every time he hears one open in the apartment hallway he sprints off to hide under my bed. He's a good little kitty, other than his dagger like claws

I tried playing stacraft 2 this weekend and sucked. And I finished blue mountain state. So I'm living the suburbs life pretty hard lol.

So, at 7:35am or so bst I landed in Edinburgh. Right now I'm in St Andrews counting the days until I move in to my dorms. (on Saturday). I'm writing this while data roaming like a scrub so I'm not able to upload pictures now, but I'll add a bunch in probably an hour or so. There was a beautiful sunset and sunrise on the plane. Scotland was sunny today, for a bit. I'm rather excited to be able to say I'm a real historian, or at least one in training. Classes start the tenth and I'm not legal to drink until the 17th. That'll be fun.

Tldr St Andrews is great, trying to set up a phone and bank account is not. Also enough caffeine will negate 25 hours of no sleep

pictures from the trip

  1. my seat location (was still coach, fucking american airlines)
  2. JFK being an airport
  3. saying bye to the city I was born and raised in.
  4. more NYC
    5-9. sunset
  5. dinner. "mmmmmmm"
    11-15. sunrise queue appropriate music

The sunrise and sunset were some of the most beautiful I've seen.
16. scotland
17. edinburgh, pardon the lack of focus
18. after we landed, driving to St. Andrews.
19. cool hill
20. St. Andrews. It's sunny. I was lied to.
21. St. Andrews again. Still kinda sunny.

Ooo! When you get back to Edinburgh, go to Piemakers on South Bridge, near the university campus. It's fantastic. Your mouth will thank you.

Also, enjoy Scotland! I have lots of suggestions of where to go, if you're looking for any!

In Edinburgh, you should see the big castle (they sometimes have discounted tickets, so keep an eye on meetup groups and things like that) and hike up Arthur's Seat. It has a fantastic view of the city, and if you go there on New Year's Eve, you can watch the fireworks from across half of east Scotland. Edinburgh also has the Auld Hoose, which is a pub with fantastic beer and the best nachos I've ever had. The Edinburgh museum is also great. Right now, the Fringe festival is going on. It will have a lot of free shows and paid ones, but it's a great exhibition of the UK's comedy and acting scene.

Outside Edinburgh, Glasgow is worth a visit. The University of Glasgow has a really beautiful campus, and the Clyde is fantastic to hike down. On the whole, though, I much prefer Edinburgh, though if you're planning a trip to Glasgow specifically, let me know, and I'll tell you all my favourite places.

I also recommend going north to Inverness, which I prefer to Aberdeen. Inverness is the fourth biggest Scottish city, but you can walk across it in half an hour. It's tiny, but scenic, and it's the gateway to the highlands, which are glorious. If you get a chance, hike the West Highland Way, and then if you're not tired, hike across from Fort William to Inverness, which is a glorious, glorious walk. Visit Loch Ness - there's a bed and breakfast in Drumnadrochit which does a great Scottish breakfast with a lovely view of the mountains that I can recommend - and see Castle Urquhart. Check out Loch Lomond and climb Ben Lomond. Take the train to the Isle of Skye. Honestly, though, it's the little towns like Lanark or Linlithgow or any of the funny-named ones dotting the Highlands that make Scotland. Get out, take the train somewhere, and stop at a little town along the way. They're beautiful, and they really show what the essence of Scotland is.

I recently learned there's a comic store near me. Which is fantastic as i live in the countryside and the only thing that comes near to being a comicstore here is one shelf of mangas in a book shop nearby. And those aren't really comics :/

But i never get to go there because i had stuff to do on every weekend for several weeks. So... ugh...

Also i don't have free-hours in my school anymore which sounds cool at first, since that means i have to spend less time there. But is also bad because i can't do my homework in them anymore, which means that i don't have breaks anymore. Because i use them for doing homework.

John Oliver announced his own "badhistory book", where he abuses the fact that taking about history in a confident tone then it becomes believable. Check out the announcement on YOUTUBEs. Oh and he also isn't shipping a book cause he was lying to begin with. Confusing!

I tutor a philosophy of science course. This week we were discussing pseudoscience. At one point in the discussion I mentioned that studies have shown that engaging people in a debate about their beliefs and showing why they are wrong in fact increases their confidence in their wrong opinion. At this point one of my students suggested negging as a viable strategy for converting people who reject climate change or evolution. I was surprised at how much sense it made.

Also the first essay was due at midday today. One of my students emailed me at 5:30pm last night asking where she could find the essay questions.

I keep waking up with a sore neck and back--neither of my pillows seem to be doing the trick.

New laptop came in a few nights ago, and it's working ok. Still waiting for Microsoft Office though...and my Windows 10 upgrade.

My residence hall's going to have a beach bonfire on Saturday, which is cool. I'm thinking of doing that. Meet people, etc. Also beach bonfires.

Also, for a school that was recognized by the prez for its high tech correctness, a lot of the tech services are really lacking. The class sites and printing hubs could use some improvement as well. I know a lot of people say Blackboard is really bad and can use some updates, but NMU seems to be needing some serious improvement. Also, one building has hexagonal desks. But I'll manage. Not too bad though. Really approachable staff an professors, so that's good.

I'm officially an intern! By that, I mean I've been an intern for over a year at this point, but I taught my first lesson while feeling thoroughly under the weather (I'll leave the reason to your imagination). It went better than expected; I don't think I came off as particularly draconian, which I'd argue is nicer than I am on a day when I don't feel like death. The baby Latins got an extra weekend to correct their homework, so they're probably pleased either way.

So remember the Canadian I hooked up with? Turns out she's 10 years older than me. Like she graduated high school in 1998. I WAS SEVEN YEARS OLD IN 98. It also turns out that she was joined in holy matrimony a month before all this. I swear to the Holy Volcano that I had no fucking idea. Because of all that, the incident is getting the black highlighter treatment, but not before at least two people have set my ringtone on their phone to OPP by Naughty By Nature.

Dad came to me yesterday saying that a friend of his recommended a history podcast for me to listen to, he said his coworker said it was really good. He'd written the name down, Dan Carlin. It felt kinda bad when I told him about how much I hate his podcasts, and I have to turn them off after about half an hour if I ever try to listen.

Too. Much. 'Dramatic'. Voice. And. Repeating. Everything. Over. And. Over. Also, how he goes a bit light on the details. That's what I live for. I'd let Jamie Jeffers talk to me all day about obscure land grants in 8th Century Britain.

In the process of getting a poli-sci internship.

Does the fact that my professors seem to enjoy having intelegent conversations with me mean that I'll be good in interviews?

Does being good in an interview make up for my lack of job experience?

Why is job experience an important factor in getting an internship in the first place? Am I supposed to start working strait out of the womb and cite birth as my greatest achievement so far?

Some friends of mine just got back from a film festival in Birmingham and saw some Civil War movie that's critically acclaimed, but they hated. It's called The Keeping Room, and is being hailed as a feminist war movie or something, but the synopsis just sounds like Gone With the Wind but more violent and just as reliant on the faithful slave trope.
