There's a pretty good breakdown of the "What class should I play?" question which breaks down the basics and playstyle of each class that might deserve to be in this post - I know I'm seeing that asked a lot.

[–]SnickyMcNibitsGuide Writer[FA] 48

That's a well written guide. The author must be super sexy.

Necromancer

When properly equipped for it, Necromancers are considered the best class in the game at stacking conditions on their unfortunate targets.

Oh how the times have changed

[–]SnickyMcNibitsGuide Writer[FA] 7

Yeah, I'm going to be rewriting it shortly. Most of the info is still relevant though.

It would be useful if you mentioned PvE viability. This spring, when starting with the game, I rolled a mesmer, excited by the "tons of unique parts" part of your guide, only to realize in a few weeks that mesmers have lackluster damage and not that essential utility in PvE. Rerolling to a warrior and then running a thief made be realize how strong and exciting can a meta choice be.

Mesmer is solid PvE class, while it will loose to ele in terms of raw damge, but mesmer with 3 phantasm has surprisingly high dps output for long duration. And mesmer has access arguably to best reflects, and that updated timewarp is really good.

I used to play mesmer before the patch, and at that point it was less viable definitely. Also, in comparison with warrior or thief (my only other lvl80 characters), the damage takes quite a while to ramp up, which feels suboptimal at least on trash. I can't say that I know a lot about mesmer, but I definitely felt how powerful warrior was immediately after switching to it, something that I didn't have mesmer after playing it for a few weeks. Maybe that's just me though.

[–]SnickyMcNibitsGuide Writer[FA] 0

Exactly. I don't think that there's any classes that are 'bad' at any given game type (including necromancers, :P) but playing a class that doesn't suit your style will hurt your performance.

Damn... I just picked a necro, bad choice?

[–]SnickyMcNibitsGuide Writer[FA] 1

Necros are plenty fine, just ignore all the whiners on the forums.

With the recent trait update they lost a good amount of raw condition damage output, but they maintain their 'attrition' style gaemplay just fine. There's no such thing as a squishy necromancer so while you might not have as much damage as some other condition builds you can also stay in the fight a lot longer than others. Condition Necromancers also have a lot of control capability with Fear, boon stripping and constant CC.

Yeah I'm going to keep going. I like the play style so far, so no reason to change in my mind. Feels strong at level 10 anyway :)

If you're not min/maxing, definitely choose based on playstyle/theme. I play necro for the theme myself.

Shelving professions into easy/medium/hard to play doesn't indicate a well-written guide, though. Seems like the selection was done based on how many buttons you have to keybind and the guide is written from PvE perspective.

Just to point out.

[–]SnickyMcNibitsGuide Writer[FA] 2

I will be rewording that bit to reflect learning curve rather than complexity. And the guide is most definitely written with all 3 game modes in mind.

I hope you update it after HoT drops, it helped me out a lot when I started playing last January.

Elementalist Hard to play, Low Durability

Oh, wait. You are serious? Let me laugh even harder.

[–]AmadanBright De Light 3

Yes, serious. Elementalist's defenses are all active defenses. Unless you know it inside and out, Elementalist is absolutely the squishiest profession in the game - especially coupled with the fact that the preferred armour in PvE is zerker. Additionally, you have to learn to juggle double or triple the number of skills on a build than with some other classes. In PvE PvP, sure, cele d/d is a beast if played correctly, but you might have not noticed that this is a "new player resource" - it will take way more play for a new player to master d/d cele, than, say, bunker Guardian, with its heavy armour, passive Virtues and low number of different skills.

EDIT: Typo

We are getting lots of posts about launcher conflict issues, can you include something to inform new players what it could be and how to fix it?

Many times launcher conflict issues can caused be 3rd party programs such as Sweetfx, Reshade, or Nvidia GeForce Experience. Here's the self help guide if you are having issues:
https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/93290408-Problems-Downloading-or-Patching
But if you can't find your fix there, submit a support request (upper right) and they will help you find the culprit.

Servers

I know, you're probably from NA, so that doesn't affect you, but on EU servers, there are language specific servers, like "Abbadon's Mouth [DE]" and "Vizunah Square [FR]". The megaserver could probably confuse new players. "I've chosen 'Baruch Bay [ES]', why are there Germans on my server?".

Maybe you could add something about that? Here's an modified version of my old overflow post, feel free to use it:

However, note that you're playing on what's called a "megaserver".

What's a megaserver?

Whenever you try to join a map such as Queensdale or Divinity's Reach, the Guild Wars 2 Network will try to locate you to an instance of that map that (probably) fits you most. The instances aren't locked to your world (server) and can get full. Therefore, you can end up on a region where most people aren't from your server, friend list, guild, or maybe don't even speak your language.

So keep in mind that although you've chosen your world, it's only important for WvW. Other than that, you're always playing with people from your region, and therefore possibly with people from other servers and therefore other languages.

Edit: Typo. Some day, I will finally learn how to spell "chosen".

I've been getting this error every time I start the downloader. I'm on campus internet, which blocks peer to peer, so I suppose that might be the issue. Is there any way to download it without P2P, or to fix this issue if it's caused by something else?

https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/38813526-Common-Error-Codes

check if all ports required are allowed in the network

GW2 doesn't use P2P. Instead it uses a CDN.

Try to see if you are able to ping to assetcdn.101.arenanetworks.com. If you can't, your best bet is to contact support.

Yeah, I can ping it just fine. By the way, it downloads about 9000kb, disappears, immediately reappears, then goes to the error message about a half second later.

That's odd. As far as I'm aware, the client only downloads from this asset CDN. Basically, the clients downloads a couple of "pre-patches". These are most likely a new client version or an updated list of game files. After that, it reboots and should go into the login screen and start downloading the game.

It's possible that connecting to a certain CDN server partly fails. Try to see if a different asset CDN server works. This forum thread explains how you can do that and it also gives you a bunch of IP addresses that you can try. This website also gives some asset servers, but this list is far from complete.

Quick question, I've been playing the game for about an hour or so after the free to play announcement. I have never played an mmo before so i picked the elementalist because it sounded cool. After reading the class description thing in this thread, it sounds like I picked the hardest class to get good at and enjoy, is it worth starting over with a different class?

I did the same and started over with warrior. Elementalist really is a hard class, but can be amazingly powerful in offense and supporting. Playing solo with an elementalist is really hard if you compare it to classes like warrior or thief. Back to your question: Yes, start over with warrior. It's the easiest class IMO and perfect for solo PvE. My elementalist is still about lvl 28 right now while I have a lvl 80 warrior with some ascended gear and a lvl 80 thief with cool weapon skins for pvp. Have fun and please keep the community as friendly as it was before GW went free to play.

I for sure will do my best to keep this community as fun and friendly as it was before, I'm a pretty chill dude. And thank you for the advice! I'm thinking I'll start over but keep the elementalist for later to come back to once I'm more used to mmos

Have fun and please keep the community as friendly as it was before GW went free to play.

You know it wont...

Hi, elementalist is hard because of how "squishy" it is. But lot of people have started with that class and thrived! Only thing to remember is that you can't stand and take a beat down and so have to constantly keep moving and dodging. If anything, elementalist will teach you the game quicker. Also what makes them "hard" is the "attunement dance". That's how you cycle between fire, water, air and earth constantly by pressing F1 to F4. That can bit a bit much but still doable. My suggestion is that you play a bit as an Elementalist and see how you feel. If you feel you are dying too much or just becoming overwhelmed, you can switch to a simpler class like warrior. But don't delete your elementalist. It's a cool and popular class and very fun to play!

Thanks! I think I'll keep the guy around but for the moment switch to ranger until I can pick the game up and understand more about it (never played an mmo before) its definitely satisfying as hell to use the elementalist but if its not the best class for a newbie to the genre I'll come back to it later

The four easiest profession's are Guardian, Warrior, Ranger and Necromancer. So you can switch to one of those if you would like.

In terms of playing the game, make sure you keep moving. If you are standing still you are most likely going to die. The dodge key is V. If you see an enemy charging an attack (there is normally a yellowish spark effect around an enemy) get back or out the way. Use your dodge.

What weapon are you using? Your first five skills are determined by your weapon and if you are still using your dagger you get from the first instance I would suggest switching to a sceptre. Dagger for elementalist is a high damage, highly mobile melee weapon which is only really useable at level 80.

The sceptre is a mid range weapon. It is designed to keep you at range from an enemy. Also water skill 3, Water Trident, is a nice little heal if you aim at yourself to keep your health up while your healing skill is on recharge.

[–]Anthrozil7[Att] [Cry] [EVOS] 4

Everyone says Guardian is easy to play, but they mean easy in open world content. Guardians are actually quite difficult to play well in a dungeon setting. A lot is riding on you.

I picked up a sceptre and am using that atm, and tbh I'm having a lot of fun with the elementalist right now, using the fire tooth ability is a lot of fun but if its going to make things hard on me in the future, especially for my first mmo ever, I think I'm going to switch to a ranger. Thank you for the advice!

It's fully up to you of course. Try all the profession's. You may find an unlikely favourite. Also the race affects the feel of a profession as well. I used to have an Asura Mesmer that I could not get the hang of. I switched to Sylvari Mesmer and instantly found it a lot better.

Also if you are going to switch to ranger you need to understand that the pet is not there to be a tank. The pet is an extension of your damage and provides the ranger with additional utility. Every pet has a different F2 skill.

I have a 2 TB Seagate Backup Plus Drive - is that considered a Solid State Drive?

If so, and I move my game to that drive - would it slow my game down to load it from there as opposed to my PC's drive? This post says that it's recommended - but when I open stuff up from that drive it seams to take longer. I've not tried putting an MMO on there though.

Thanks in advance for helping me with these questions. :)

No that is just a basic external hdd and is probably being throttled through a usb 2.0 cable. Putting an mmo or any game on it would be a terrible idea unless you are just transferring the files to another computer. SSDs are smaller in storage space unless you want to pay a fortune, usually 128g or 256.

Oh ok. I'll look into getting a SSD then. I really have long load times on each map (I usually have time to go get a cup of coffee while waiting for LA to load and come back still waiting for it to load) and if getting a SSD will help on that, that would be great.

Thank you for the help. :)

[–]AnubArackDiana (Ethereal/Kuunavang) 0

Yes, investing in an SSD does wonders for games and GW2 especially. I just did an LA load straight after opening the PC and it took 20 seconds on max details.

I've been looking at laptops for GW2 to use when I'm not at hone with my PC and curious if anyone has good suggestions for laptop gpus. The GPU the seems to appear a lot is the GTX 820m. Anyone fancy helping a brother out?

Don't under any circumstances go for a 820m. It's complete garbage and even if you get an i7 to accompany it you will still have crap fps. gpu's like that are little more than a marketing stunt. 570m/670m is the bare minimum for gaming in my book. Those two give you about the same performance as a R7 250 / 550 Ti, so still not really anything to write home about in any way. Better would be 680m/780m which is comparable to a GTX 660 / R7 265.

[–]Sweet_Moonsugarstuff Stuff STUFF! 0

I have an Asus ROG750 (2 years old or so) with a haswell i7 and gtx770m, runs pretty smoothly on high-ultra settings, even in huge WvW encounters. Its a nice laptop, maybe a bit overpriced.

Any of the recent Alienware laptops will run the game at medium to high settings with decent performance. Dell does deals on them every month or so. Back in the day I got a M11x (the 11 inch model, unavailable now) for like 700, and even it ran a solid 30+FPS unless things got nutty in WvW.

Also, look for higher end CPUs, like i5 or i7. They matter a bit more than your GPU when it comes to running GW2 smoothly.

[–]XechStMicah Saint [Cmaj] 0

Yeah, there's a catalogue in my area that allows you to pay off purchases weekly, many featuring i5 and i7 CPUs and a heavy dose of RAM, so I've been keeping an eye on that. Cheers for the feedback!

i want to ask whats the client file size of GW2?

About 25 GByte on-disk, not so sure about the download (given the nature of the files, probably at least 22GB). You need to download at least a third of all files to play the game. The rest can be downloaded on-demand (or even streamed in background). However, if you have a really low bandwidth download, you probably want to get a physical copy of the Gw2.dat.

The Australian GW2 community has been known for doing that. Maybe someone in your Country can send you a bunch of DVDs with a split Gw2.dat, if your bandwidth is really crappy (not meant as an insult; a friend of mine needed 4 days for his PayDay2 update, and I remember what it's like to have low bandwith).

and is there a torrent mirror cause i have a low bandwidth and need to pause the downloader

You can exit the launcher to "pause" the download, and simply start it again. It doesn't delete the already downloaded files.

Thanks

il go with thw launcher i thought theres no pause haha but it takes me more thn a week to DL evertyhing

[–]RizenDukRisen.1360 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

The file size is quite large and grows as more patches are released. It's currently at 21gb I believe. The plus is that you can download a certain amount of the game and it'll become Playable, which means u can play as it downloads the rest of the game.

Hey, thanks for this - just started playing and it's pretty fun. Thing is, I'm the kind of guy who likes one of everything, so I'd love to try out all the classes and find out which one I like the best, but I only have 2 character slots - I don't want to shell out any money when I've just started playing, but how much do character slots actually cost? Says that it costs gems in the character select screen, but I have no idea what those are...

they are the premium currency used to buy stuff from the gemstore. You can buy 800, which is the cost of a character slot, for 10$/€ or you can trade your gold to gems

How much gold? I'm guessing a load, more than a newbie will make in a while...

[–]AmadanBright De Light 1

Yeah, it's a lot of gold for a newbie. To make the best use of your two slots without having to upgrade to HoT, use one slot as a guinea pig: make a new character, then enter PvP lobby; you will be instaleveled to 80. Choose your PvP equipment my clicking the helmet icon, middle of the top of the screen (Berserker amulet is usually a safe bet); then try out your skills against the practice dummy golems there. When you feel you got the idea about the class, delete the character and make the next profession.

[–]EdenFlorenceIsle of Janthir 1

Keep in mind if you are a F2P (free to play) account, gold > gem conversion is disabled. In order to access this feature you will need to purchase the game.

Theres no sub fee. All the Guild Wars series ever required was to buy the game itself. No monthly fees, etc. Of course you can buy things off the gem store with real money. But nothing is really necessary to enjoy the game.

If you buy the expansion then you don't have any of the free account restrictions and are just like every other player.

Much appreciated, can't wait to get started now I know I can play the thing, just wish they made it f2p at the start of the summer.

Yeah, I was able to play on my shitty four year-old work laptop for the week or so that my PC was in for repair. It won't look as pretty, but it's entirely playable.

Eh, I disagree. I played for 6 months with my i5 and integrated gfx and the game looked like crap but ran reasonably well in low to mildly populated areas. Don't expect to be zerging in wvw with payable framerates but everything else should be good.

The Intel integrated graphics are certainly inadequate, but I run GW2 on an i3-4370 and get upwards of 90 fps in solo PVE (highest settings) and 50ish for things like Frozen Maw (mid settings, no shadows).

I get 30 fps at low rez low quality on a Surface 3. Not Surface Pro 3, Surface 3...

I used to play on i5 with integrated gfx and the game was certainly. Sure it look a little shit but it was in no way unplayable.
