It's funny how gators get legitimately offended when you call them right-wing, and then proceed to say that SJWs get easily offended because they take death and rape threats seriously.

It's funny how gators get legitimately offended when you call them right-wing

Can we extend that to "literally anything" instead of just "when you call them right wing"

It always blows my mind how people can look at the mainstream media in the united states and conclude that it's "Extreme left".

And I'm constantly amazed by the right's opinion of the Guardian (though I'm biased having written for them a couple of times) - it's not the far-left, it's the soft, doughy, middle-class, liberal centre-left.

It has £60 cooking seminars ffs, does that sound revolutionary or remotely interested in proletarian rights to you?

And they've been horrified by the idea of a left-wing Labour Party.

I'm actually hoping that Corbyn wins, just so the labour party actually gets some principles

I voted for him. Might actually pull me out of my political depression and persuade me to be active again (I haven't really done anything in politics for about a decade).

[–]Red_Oktoberfest<witty flair> [

Seems like a smart vote. Dunno if his "colleagues" will let him do anything if he wins though.

I wouldn't say they're horrified by it. The editorial staff obviously lean a little to the right of Corbyn and the Labour left but they were to the left of Milliband (who wasn't really that far left even though a lot of people thought he was). A lot of their columnists are pretty far left too and the paper's response to Corbyn's rise is generally pretty measured and broadly if not enthusiastically supportive. The problem is that like any media outlet the senior figures there are well off, middle-class, midde-aged writers so they're often small 'c' conservative with their opinions even when they're not big 'c' Conservatives in their politics.

THANK YOU. The Guardian is so centre-left. It supported the Lib Dems in the 2010 election ffs. And it only supported Labour this year with reluctance.

Also, the right on reddit are fond of calling it a left-wing Daily Mail. It isn't. The Guardian has far more journalistic integrity, and far higher standards in general, than the Mail. It's a left-wing Times, or, at worst, Telegraph.

Indeed. It's pretty simple: No media outlet is going to reach that level of exposure and popularity, unless it is basically representing a reasonable majority view, and the majority view is not going to be extremist in an average western country.

Spouting bs feminist and social terms when spreading lies about us, then backing up their assertions using bs feminist ideological stances? How many right wing outlets have participated in this shitstorm that is basically a modern day international bullying of nerds and geeks from all walks of life? I can count the right-wing outlets that spread lies originating from liars, harassers, abusers and scam artists like Anita or Quinn or Wu and their journalist friends on 1 hand.

For the left-wing outlets we need entire wikis to keep track of the bs. And the reason those left-wing journos spread those lies to defend their friends? Because they felt it was justified through the ideology they and people like Anita and Wu adhere to: extremist leftist ideology.

They report on 1 side, and lionise the other side. That is why someone who mentally and emotionally abused their partner and exposed him to STD's gets lionized by left-wing outlets and her victim gets vilified for outing his abuser.

If you think GamerGate is a fan of Breitbart, it's not. What it has done is allow people to put aside their political biases when it comes to news outlets and judge the content. As for Anita, she becomes more and more irrelevant to gaming every day. Turns out the vast majority of gamers, who happen to be leftists, disagree with the extremist leftist authoritarians.

Today I learned that Fox News is part of the "extreme left"

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/10/22/monicas-mission-can-humiliated-lewinsky-lead-charge-against-online-harassment/

The latest example is the Gamergate furor, where video game developer Zoe Quinn was viciously attacked by an ex-boyfriend who described her allegedly cheating on him at voluminous length. Another game developer, Brianna Wu, said she and her husband had to leave their home, tweeting: “I want to be crystal clear - I am scared of the death threats I've gotten. I am terrified of the #gamergate blame-the-victim witch hunt.”

The problem with dumb shit like this, is that words like "far left" actually has a meaning in real life, established by almost two centuries of political action, dialogue and analysis.

That meaning is not "They hurt my fee-fee's".

Go ahead and explain to me how CNN or Fox News are "extreme left" and want to abolish all private property and expropriate the land owners.

Direct links to primary articles from either site that shows that they support far-left politics please. No screencaps or photoshops.

basically a modern day international bullying of nerds and geeks from all walks of life

Oh give me a break. I grew up being actually bullied for being a nerd. Here's a hint: If you can ignore it by not going to certain sites, it's not bullying. Gamergate, on the other hand, has shown time and again that it is not afraid of "super ethical" behavior against its enemies by doxxing and threatening.

Absolutely this. I'm in my early 40's, a genuine OG nerd who played AD&D in my mom's basement, went to Renaissance Faires, and owned a trenchcoat and fedora (I got better), and was bullied constantly for it. I'm glad I went out in the world and actually met people and did things that taught me stuff like 'being pointlessly mean to people is stupid' and 'try adopting other points of view' and 'Ayn Rand is a pedantic crypto-fascist.' I could have easily gone with the full Dark Triad of MRA, PUA and GG'er.

Gamers are not bullied in the modern media. Give me a damn break.

I always find it fun when gaters claim they're not a right-wing movement in a thread about Cultural Marxism.

This is the same imaginary enemy that Breivik murdered 77 people to stop, and is not taken seriously outside right-wing circles (and typically pretty far right at that).

Ranting about Cultural Marxism really isn't a great look. Gaters, if you want people to stop calling you right-wing, stop upvoting nonsense about Cultural Marxism like the linked thread ("Cultural Marxism vs Cultural Libertarianism with Lauren Southern").

The other subreddits that link that video are also pretty telling:

[–]Ohgoditsadildocorn 13ポイント14ポイント  (2子コメント)

I honestly don't know what cultural Marxism is.. I've read some crazy rants about it and post modernism. All I got out of it is inclusiveness makes some people really angry..

Wikipedia has a decent summary:

A 21st-century conspiracy theory regards the Frankfurt School as the origin of a contemporary movement in the political left to subvert traditional western cultural norms, referred to as "Cultural Marxism" by theory proponents. It advocates the idea that multiculturalism and political correctness are products of critical theory, which originated with the Frankfurt School. The theory is associated with American conservative thinkers such as William Lind, Pat Buchanan and Paul Weyrich, and has received institutional support from the Free Congress Foundation.

According to Chip Berlet, who specializes in the study of extreme right-wing movements, the Cultural Marxism conspiracy theory found fertile ground with the development of the Tea Party movement in 2009, with contributions published in the American Thinker and WorldNetDaily highlighted by some Tea Party websites.

More recently, the Norwegian terrorist Anders Behring Breivik included the term in his self-authored document "2083: A European Declaration of Independence", which along with the Free Congress Foundation's "Political Correctness: A Short History of an Ideology" was e-mailed to 1,003 addresses about 90 minutes before the 2011 bomb blast in Oslo for which Breivik was responsible.

Philosopher and political science lecturer Jérôme Jamin has stated "Next to the global dimension of the Cultural Marxism conspiracy theory, there is its innovative and original dimension, which lets its authors avoid racist discourses and pretend to be defenders of democracy."

......Do they not realize that of all the politicians in Washington, Bernie is essentially the most SJWish of all? He literally considers himself a Socialist. He's the sort of person who would let those BLM protesters take the mic because he actually agrees with most of what they're saying and doesn't want to look like he's "oppressing" them.

In all fairness, "Social justice" and "Socialism" are by no means inherently co-dependent concepts.

Social Democrat*- a small distinction, but a rather important one nonetheless. He's certainly no socialist and he doesn't claim to be one either. It would be a valuable step for American politics regardless, but he isn't quite the "extremist" people make him out to be.

He's referred to himself a "Democratic Socialist" many times (not just a Social Democrat). Democratic Socialist essentially just means a socialist who is in favor of a democratic system, as opposed to Marxist-Leninist one party dictatorship.

In practice, I guess you could say he really ends up being equivalent to a Social Democrat, because he's obviously not going to be able to do away with capitalism in the USA. I'd personally call him a "Pragmatic Socialist." One who knows that this country will likely never convert to actual socialism, so he does what he can to advance important socialist causes within the framework of a capitalist society.

This Presidential campaign is the first time he's ever run for anything as a Democrat. (And it's pretty much guaranteed he's only doing that because he knows that a third party candidate is going to accomplish zilch in a nationwide race). In college, he was in the "Young People's Socialist League," and his first four runs for political office, he ran as a member of the "Liberty Union" party, which is a socialist party.

[–]Measle [

Do we want to give our crops up to the goverment in 'murica? Over my dead body.

The only way I know is the American way! That's selling your crops to the government to artificially support market prices, which are in turn sold at a discount to corporations who sell them at a profit to the individuals! Also the same corporation sells the seeds to the farmer. That's right - the free market!

GamerGate loves talking about things that exist only in their minds: cultural Marxism and ethical games journalism

As a former games journalist... it was never as bad as people think. There are a lot of subconscious biases, but quid pro quo is rare in my experience.

Yeah, all the "scandals" they've "uncovered" were blatantly obvious and have been since I bought my first EGM in 1994 (the big 200-pager with Sonic on the cover!) Everything is opinion, everything is subject to bias, and everything is written by people who have opinions and are subject to bias. When Gamespot tried to do review scores by computer, Jeff Gerstmann got fired. What they consider the genesis of GamerGate is absolutely the prime example of why their "objective" ideal is the worst thing.

They're still a lot of far right elements in their party but calling the entire party far-right just isn't fair considering they're further to the left than the Tories on a fair few issues, even their immigration policy is fairly centre-right now.

Gaters, if you want people to stop

I've finally decided that this approach is doomed to failure with that crowd, straight out of the gate. I've been following GG since the very beginning, and even early on (I'm talking within a week of its inception), the people who speak for that group determined that anyone telling them anything along the lines of "abandon this banner, it's irreparably tainted due to bad actors/if you're serious about your issues, you'll organize like serious people do and come up with an actionable list of goals" will be painted as an enemy, a splitter, and part of the "problem."

Say what you want about anything KiA claims or disclaims as an organizational goal, representative belief, or specific attributable action. Their response to meta-advice on how to better achieve what they purport to stand for is indication enough of what they're about.

It's incredible.

It reminds me of that dork on Yotube called Teal-Deer. It's baffling to me as well, because the accounts from both GamerGate and the rest of the known universe have been pretty well documented at this point. We know that GamerGate claims they started as a hashtag in a response to venomous collusion from evil SJW authors at various game magazines, and we also know what actually happened.

I tried to debate GG on the merits of their movement last September and October. It became clear to me pretty quickly that they weren't interested in a good-faith dialogue. Anyone still taking part in that conversation has got to be a masochist.

and we also know what actually happened.

And yet last time the matter of Gamergate's origin story came up in SRD, you had people being down voted for claiming that it came from /pol/ (with the common incorrect claim that it either came from /v/ or emerged spontaneously on Twitter repeated heavily) until the people claiming it came from /pol/ put in references; at that point the vote counts started reversing. That post seems like a handy collection of history for next time it comes up.

It's easy to see Gamergate as just angry children, who'll grow up at some point. And that's a big part of it, of course. However, it has real consequences; a number of people (mostly women) have been driven from the industry, or in extreme cases from their homes, etc. (They were also remarkably successful in duping some people who should really have known better, notably Intel, in the early days.) I don't think it's that unreasonable that someone might want to document it.

I think it is a poor articulation of the idea that no one believes that they are a villain, that he finds villains in media that lack proper motivations uninteresting, and that if people had the ability to look objectively at themselves in a mirror it would solve a lot of the problems in the world.

You need to educate yourself. There are two axes that political schools of thought are commonly measured against. The first axis is the left/right political axis indicates the economic stance of the ideology. And the second axis is the libertarian/authoritarian axis that indicates the degree of enforced control that the ideology seeks to impose on people. So it is possible for there to be left wing authoritarians (Marxists) and left wing libertarians (anarchists) as well as right wing authoritarians (fascism) and right wing libertarians (classical liberals) So libertarianism is entirely separate from the right wing.

These people are so lost in their bubble that they've invented their own bizarro world where you're either an (edit: American) libertarian or an authoritarian, a classification that, even if it made sense, no one would even be interested in using except perhaps libertarians and right wingers. And where libertarianism is separate from the right wing rather than a super conservative movement (I mean come on, we know they're not using the old definition of libertarian here).

Let's see, reducing/getting rid of welfare, opposing any discussion of social equality, drastically cutting taxes for the wealthy, opposing higher minimum wage, opposing regulations that might hinder company profits.... nah, libertarians have nothing in common with right wingers. I mean right wingers are mostly old and grody, libertarians are mostly young and kewl.

False dichotomy that your presenting here. The person you are replying to is saying it's a scale, by specifying that there are two axes, not an either or situation. Also a two-axis system is pretty established political theory.

[–]Mablak 3

You're either on the authoritarian side or the libertarian side, or maybe in the middle if that's possible; a spectrum can be divided in this way. And it usually is for (American) libertarians and ancaps, since it fits into their narrative to simply label their opponents as authoritarian.

Also a two-axis system is pretty established political theory.

If you're talking about the Nolan Chart/Political Compass two-axis system, this simply isn't the case. It was created by a libertarian, to convince people that they are libertarians, and isn't used by normal political scientists.

My response from elsewhere in the thread:

Nolan chart is not that great though. Like the op's comment, "left wing authoritarians (Marxists)."

Where is the distinction made between methods and goals (means and ends)? Surely the methods are constantly changing and environmentally dependent and therefore impossible to graph. But if only the goals are being graphed then Marxism should be in the same place as Anarchism, since both have the same endgoal.

The Nolan makes less sense in the end really.

I don't really see what's wrong with the statement he made. I've seen many people, not all of them libertarians, use that same two-axis chart to specify political views. Example: https://www.politicalcompass.org/analysis2

Political compass is really annoying. I've taken that test a few times, and it almost never gives, what I feel to be, an accurate result. It's too dichotomous. According to that site, you either agree or disagree with a position; there's no middle choice.

I don't really agree about Marx, he should have used Stalin or someone like that. I think you're overthinking it. Authoritarian just means more government control over people's actions, and libertarian (in this context) means less. The USSR had quite a bit of control over their citizen's actions, which means its accurate to call it a 'left wing authoritarian' state.

The opposite of authoritarian is democratic, at least when you talk about states. Not "libertarian".

[–]Mablak 6

One big problem is the equivocation fallacy they're using. The political spectrum chart is at least attempting to use 'libertarian' in a way completely unrelated to the American version of libertarianism. But GGers and many who use this chart are using it to advocate American libertarianism, as if this is the same thing. Regardless, virtually nobody classifies themselves this way in real life.

Was American libertarianism always significantly different from what politicalcompass uses the word to mean? I remember people using that site 10+ years ago.

[–]Humdrum_of_Inequity [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

The terminology that the political compass uses is pretty loaded, particularly the libertarian/authoritarian axis. Anyone really more concerned about social well-being over individuality isn't represented, or generally assumed to be authoritarian since it's not individualist. So you end up with people, like the above, who are confident in describing social justice or civil rights as authoritarian.

Umm... that's called the political spectrum, and it's established political theory. It's not made up libertarian bizarro bubble stuff, I would say it's Political Theory 101, but I think even that's overdoing it. Like I'm pretty sure I learned about it in 8th grade Social Studies.

The bizarro aspect is that they're implying you're either an authoritarian or for American libertarianism; this is how they understand and apply it.

implying you're either

No he said "axes" which means there's a scale, not a dichotomy, which is how the political spectrum works. And he's clearly talking about the globally accepted definition of "libertarian". You even quoted it. I'll quote him again and bold it for you:

And the second axis is the libertarian/authoritarian axis that indicates the degree of enforced control that the ideology seeks to impose on people.

[–]Mablak 5

Scales still turn into dichotomies where nuance is lost for most people. You're either for authoritarianism (to some extent), or for libertarianism (to some extent).

That quote doesn't indicate anything, since 'enforced control' to (American) libertarians and ancaps can be any taxation/public policy whatsoever. In all likelihood he/she is interpreting this definition to be in line with American libertarianism. He/she could be using it in the non-American way, but GGers don't usually do this.

Yes, everyone is somewhere on the authoritarian-libertarian axis, and since the dude specifically said there's an axis, I'm really not sure where you're trying to take this now since you said that he thinks you're either a libertarian or an authoritarian, when those obviously apply to someone that's deviated some amount from the center which is where most people lie.

And "enforced control" is just another way of saying "law", it doesn't mean it's bad, and it's not like "taxation is theft" or any other libertarian mumbo jumbo; it doesn't even have anything to do with libertarianism. Laws control your actions and are enforced. The A-L axis determines to what extent you think the government should enforce control through laws. None of this is politically charged, it's just basic political theory.

[–]Mablak 2

it doesn't even have anything to do with libertarianism

Try explaining that to libertarians! In the US, it's nearly impossible to use the word libertarianism without it being used as American libertarianism. GGers are talking about their 'movement' being libertarian in the politically charged way. It's no coincidence that so many (American) libertarian blogs, news sources, think tanks, etc, are aligned with GG and talk about it as a libertarian movement, by the definition that most Americans understand.

The person in KIA is talking about the Nolan chart, which is kinda bad for a few reasons, but still better than a lot of the crank shit i've seen.

As an aside - it's slightly confusing that people are still attempting to apply American political standards to what is a fairly global group of people.

I mean, American alignments are weird anyway, it doesn't matter where on the scale anything affiliated with gamergate is.

"SubRedditDrama", a subreddit, that several years ago used to be about having a laugh at drama in various subreddits, then became subsumed into the so called "fempire", a group of subreddits that adhere to a certain ideology, that can best be described as "stupid".

Try /r/SRSsucks for some links to start to understand what exactly is going on.

I appreciate it's "in context", but I love it when people ask definition questions and are given really heavily subjective answers. I thought GG was all about generating objective reviews, rather than bringing your personal politics into... oh, never mind.

It's akin to the whole "you SJWs care too much about identity"; signalling that not only does the speaker clearly care enough about identity themselves to want to differentiate themselves, but that the "SJWs" probably don't really care too much because you had to invent an identity to give them.

Edit: Fermatting.

I am gonna repeat part of what I said last time:

What we are seeing is the revival of the Republican Party for my generation. Obama's election and the 2008 recession made identifying as a conservative or Republican very unpopular socially so many jumped left, at least on paper(they still voted conservative(thus congress flipping over to the Republican side over time after his(Obama) first election) at least for those old enough to vote at the time). What we are seeing is a culture "War" over who can call themselves "liberals" as the party they once were a part of has become too radical for even their tastes so they are trying redefine the other party with mixed results.

Just observe them. Watch as the media gives females and minorities more prominent roles then all of a sudden its a conspiracy of the "liberal/SJW infested" media/Hollywood to destroy the careers of good white men.

I am neutral in all of this "Anti-GGvsGG" bullshit as it comes off as a "white women vs white men" culture war with a few token minority friends in the mix. I have nothing to gain by picking a side in this internet bitch fight.
