I'll be downvoted for saying this, and I'm not helicopterist, but you can't just complain that Blackhawks receive 90% of the small arms fire without acknowledging that they also do 90% of the missions. Everyone conveniently ignores this fact. The problem here isn't small arms discrimination, it's a problem with Blackhawk culture.

    Well, I'm a trans-helicopter-mechanic. Although technically I fix refrigerators for a living, I identify as a helicopter mechanic, and when I'm repairing that refrigerator, I really feel like I'm actually installing 30mm cannons into a helicopter.

      Everyone seems to talk about Blackhawks receiving more fire than any other form of helicopter. While that may be true, you can't ignore the Whitehawks that get shot down as well.

      One could also argue that many other forms of Army aviation are rarely at an altitude at which small arms fire are a reasonable method to attack them. Blackhawks need to just chill out and get high.

      Clearly this is a problem of missionism. Why are blackhawks the ones who have to do all the low altitude missions, while the jets have practically no altitude limits? This isn't recent either; this pattern dates back as far as Vietnam and Korea. We clearly need to retrofit blackhawks with booster rockets to enable them to reach higher altitudes.

      Its not a matter of Blackhawks having altitude limits, its because they dont have many good high altitude role models. I mean, Chinooks fly really high, but they're just so different than Blackhawks. Its just a social disconnect. A shame really.

      I grew up in a predominantly Blackhawk neighbourhood, and most of my friends were Blackhawks. I sadly saw the majority of them fly the same missions over and over, despite all the opportunities available to them. For a lot of them, flying missions was the only way they got a sense of self-worth, because they were assembled in dysfunctional factories where it was never given to them. But ultimately it's up to Blackhawks themselves to break the cycle.

      One of my Blackhawk friends was shot down on a mission. It prompted me to get out of that environment so I studied hard and became a search & rescue helicopter. Another guy from my street became a news helicopter doing traffic reports, and another guy is now a police helicopter.

      By the point in my tour when we were assigned that duty, we were used to small arms combat. You didn't think about it. That's not to say we weren't scared shitless, if you were on the outside seats, or hurricane seat, you returned fire with the gunner. We know their not invincible, but they're really capable whirlybirds. For sure the workhorse of the army.

      The crew chiefs let you return fire from the back? I was a former crew chief and once slapped the shit outta a dude for even looking like he was going to fire out the door. My gun is on mounts that keep it from hitting the bird. Some guy in the back is more likely to hit a rotor blade then the enemy.

      Im in Army flight school for hawks now. The uh60 can take a metric fuck ton of damage. It has multiple of every system and has taken rpg's and countless small arms engagements and made it home.

      Better known as "Crashhawks". I was stationed at Fort Campbell home of the largest helicopter fleet in the world and it seemed like every month one was having a hard landing, hitting a tree or power-line. We had one in Iraq crash in front of us because of "brown-out" and the pilot couldn't see where he was landing.

      O yeah. I'm surprised they don't happen more when you add sling-loading to the mix. I had way more close calls in Chinooks (what we call Shit-nooks) than Blackhawks. Flying around with a Hummer attached to the bottom of a Chinook not my favorite. Plus it seemed like those pilots liked to test the capabilities of something that doesn't look like it is meant to fly (like a bumble-bee shouldn't be able of fly but it does). I would ride in a UH-60 any-day before a CH-47.
