I agree. I have a 7 year old savannah cat, and he STILL suckles on my fingers. "Fierce monster cat, you are not a kitten, and I am not your mommy!"

I have a kitten who suckles on my ear lobes at night because she was taken from her mother too young. I adopted a pitbull from the shelter a few days ago who just had puppies. Sometimes when the kitten is annoying me I just transfer her to the pit nips and she goes to town. It's very convenient actually.

I'm a dude and my kitten used to try and suck my nips when we'd lay down and watch tv. I wasn't a fan in the least. Plus I'm ticklish as fuck, I could never be a mother.

when I was younger I stayed at a family friend's monkey sanctuary for a few months. there was this orphaned baby macaque who took a shine to me. first thing every morning she would jump on my shoulder in order to suck on my earlobe. stayed there for hours and would cry if I attempted to remove her before she was tired. after a few days of this my earlobe was kind of crusty and damaged. didn't bother her at all.

went back a couple years ago, she had grown up and I didn't recognise her at all. she recognised me straight away though.

It's suckling. Cats often do this if they grow up without having suckled from their mothers. My cat suckles on his favorite blanket, and a friend's cat suckles on her hand just like this.

My cat suckles on earlobes, it is a strange way to wake up at night...

My mum's cat does that too and it is about 12 years old at this point. One morning my mum woke up with an earring missing and we thought the cat ate it.

Exactly. I adopted a kitten that had been found on the street in a pile of trash, eyes still closed. She was the only one of the litter to make it. She was bottle-fed until about 6 weeks and given to me. For the next couple of years she would love to suck the skin between my thumb and forefinger, almost exactly as linked in this thread. She's older now and has weaned herself off of it. Here she is, her Royal Majesty, Ziva: http://i.imgur.com/f7GrSC1.jpg

Edit because I know it seems she's staring maliciously into your soul...

She had just woken up in that pic and came over to say hi. She's not pure evil, see: http://i.imgur.com/Vj1DlyB.jpg

You said a "trilby is a fedora." Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that. As someone who is an atheist who studies euphoria, I am telling you, specifically, in atheism, no one calls trilbys fedoras. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you should too. They're not the same thing. If you're saying "fedora family" you're referring to the euphoric grouping of le reddit army, which includes things from neckbearded gentlesirs to highly intelligent intellectual like myself. So your reasoning for calling a trilby a fedora is because random people "say that only neckbeards wear fedoras?" Let's get Mountain Dew and Doritos in there, then, too

These animals are oversized housecats when they are raised in captivity, if raised properly, its playing like a normal cat would. But yes its 400 pounds of muscle and claw and teeth so when a cat gets a little upset and scratches you, this one will tear your flesh off. It is important to do these things with these types of cats, get them familiar with you and your scent, they'll treat you like family.

It is not wise to train a house cat to chew on hands either. Never use hands as toys. That teaches your cat biting is ok. Yeah it's normal for the cat but not a precedent you should set as I'm sure when your cat does bite people after that they are the ones taking the blame not you

The common housecat has been domesticated and bred to be more docile and associative with people. These giant wildcats have not. It doesn't matter if they were raised in the wild or not, they still have the instincts to hunt and kill.

I'm not saying animals raised in the wild and animals raised in captivity are exactly the same though. An adult wild animal will not be tame enough for an exhibit and an adult animal raised in captivity will not be able to survive if released into the wild.

The common housecat has been domesticated and bread

Domesticated and bread

Before claiming outright domestication, you may want to address that your average housecat is entirely capable of surviving in the wild, and that it's likely to decimate the local small animal population while it does so.

Doesn't matter; a cat that size is lethal no matter how you train it. It's still a wild animal and has enough strength to end your life with a single swipe of its claw. My little house cats sometimes swipe at and/or bite me. I walk away with all of my limbs because they only weigh 10lbs.

I am a whale biologist. I calls them like I sees them.

Feeding human flesh is bad, obviously, but spending time with the animal and letting it become familiar to your feel, scent, and taste is one of the ways you socialize any animal but especially tame predators.

Sure, but teething is when they learn what things are okay to put in their mouth. Letting him do this is literally teaching him, if I wanna say hello to humans I should put their fingers in my mouth! Adorable right now, but when that mouth is filled with daggers it will be very much less so - then the animal will probably hurt someone and lose its trust relationship with its caregivers.

The cat looks a little bit old to be teething, but regardless, this isn't teething behavior - it's suckling, which is generally a comfort/safety behavior and, while not something I would ordinarily condone, isn't going to lead to bad behaviors.

Ok, just to be clear, teething is not how these, or any known animals says hello. Teething is pretty much only done with those the animal is very comfortable with, not common behavior.

Have you had animals before? They all teeth like crazy when they're young. My one puppy (hes like 2) was a vicious teether when he was younger but nowadays rather than nibbling on people he just licks people 24/7 whenever he sees them. Bare in mind he's probably ~100 pounds. Animals understand what they're capable of.

I saw a doc about these Buddhist monks who live with tigers somewhere in Asia. Their main thing was that they wouldn't let them taste any sort of blood. They fed them chicken, but they diced in very thin and mixed it with dog food. If any of the monks was cut, they'd immediately leave for fear of giving them their first taste of human blood. I'm also not a doctor. edit: Here's the link https://vimeo.com/2331034

They'd also cook it very thoroughly, so there was no blood or raw flavor in it

so do cats have no concept that their claws hurt or do they just not give a shit? :)

Those claws make me uneasy. One clinched law and BOOM! right across the highway.

That thing where they grab your hand with their front claws and kick with the back ones...

That's how they disembowel small animals.

It's a hunting technique. Cats love to play hunt so if a cat does this with you he considers you part of his social group.

Sometimes they grab you and don't move, waiting for you to make the slightest movement. Imagine a big cat did that, talk about anxiety.

Have you never owned or played with a cat before? They very obviously hold back with their claws when they don't want to actually hurt you. Even the panther here... his claws are barely doing anything.

Now, if you want to ask if they realize their claws can hurt even with just a very light touch... then probably no.

Oh they know. And they take pleasure in the fact. Sure, sometimes you'll get two 8-9 inch long parallel, bleeding scratches on your upper thigh 'accidently' resulting from a misjudged maximum performance takeoff.

Even then the best you can hope for is a quick, squinty look of apology. That's probably too much to hope for, unless your cat really loves you.

EDIT ok before you guys get on my case, I love cats. I love them. (and dogs, but thats another story)

I once rescued a kitten from the county fair when I was an 8 or 10 year old kid (50 cents each from a cardboard box, from a farming family.) and snuck her home in the glove box of my grandfather's station wagon. After my parents said I couldn't have a cat, I asked them for 50 cents for a soda.

I formulated a plan. first, the escape. The glove box. Could be. Is it safe for a little kitty? I made sure she would make it home safe. Plenty of air in the glove box, no openings she could crawl into, but a few small ones for air. Ok.

I paid the family and told them to hold the cat for me. An hour or two later, we had to leave. I said I had to go pee (I know, a little kid by himself, but this was rural, and 30 years ago. different world.) Anyway, I went and got the cat. Tucked her in my shirt, I think.. Somehow snuck her into the glove box... I think my grandpa knew but he wasn't talking.

It was maybe a 45 minute drive. I sat in the front seat, ready to pull her out if I heard any mewing of distress.

That cat was named G.C. (glove compartment) and she lived 15 years. Never mewed once when she was in the glove box. Mom fell in love when I opened the glove box as we pulled in the driveway.

"I got a cat," I said. "Your father will be thrilled," she said.

She was all black, like a burmese. I guess that's why i thought of this story. A lot smaller than this one, though.

And then your father beat the shit out of you with a pair of jumper cables?

That was a nice story.

I think my grandpa knew but he wasn't talking.

This is my favorite part. Grand parents always fuck up everything your parents try to teach you by letting you do things and then tell your parents to get over it, you're just a kid doing kid things.

I can't wait to be that grandpa. I've only got a 5 month old daughter, but I'll practice by doing it to the wife until she has her own kids and I can do it to her.

I'll practice by doing it to the wife until she has her own kids and I can do it to her.

ಠ_ಠ

By that I mean, I'll play the grandpa role of telling my wife that our daughter is just a kid doing kid things, until our daughter has kids.

Larger cats learn from play how dangerous their claws are. You'll notice larger cats are a lot more attentive to their claws than a house cat. A house cat accidentally claws a kitten, it's just a little scratch. A lion accidentally clawing a cub, it kills the cub.

This is my understanding from a post in /r/aww of an adolescent lion swimming to its handler and hugging him with his claws retracted. Someone with knowledge of big cats explained this.

Additionally, wild cats get feedback. If a lion cub scratches mom, she will growl and give it a smack. If a house cat scratches a human, the human will just think "such is life" and not correct the behavior.

So does mine, it's pretty much a full-blown assault on the arm.

The battle is engaged. Front paws locked around wrist, claws dug in for purchase. Ears back as teeth bite at the hand, release, bite again. Back legs swiftly rake the arm, a vigorous attempt at evisceration. The love of a cat at its finest.

On a related note, I strongly recommend wearing a shirt made of a thick material with long sleeves and pulling it down over your hand before rolling your cat over on her back and rubbing her belly. Just a caution.

Used to work with big cats. The Pumas were basically big ass house cats. But there is no way in hell I would ever free contact a Jag. They also just so happened to be the only cats where we had to always make sure to pin their doors or they could lift them in a second and be on you. Jags are no joke.

Those claws are terrifying.

Just a reminder to reddit that exotic/big cats do not make good pets. Even if they are comfortable around you and friendly, it is still very easy for them to hurt you by accident. Their tongues can rip skin off of your arm, their claws can cause deep lacerations, and even a play bite can puncture flesh. They can attack you out of frustration or irritation, causing serious injury or death.

Interaction with big cats should be left to the professionals who have learned how to identify a cat's state of mind. They belong in the wild or at a conservatory, not in your home.

This will probably get buried but, for those wondering where this and a couple other Gifs of exotic cats and humans, it comes generally (and definitely this particular gif) from a foundation called Black Jaguar White Tiger. It's basically a man and his crew on his compound in Mexico who help save abused exotic pets, mainly big cats, and help them thrive with their own kind. He's really really great to the animals, and not to mention all the cats are really cute. He's mainly on instagram, but he has other sites where you can see the animals and donate. It's really a great instagram page for any animal lover.

Also I'm not associated with them, I just thought I would let you guys know where this content is coming from, and let you know where to find more.
