You shouldn't "play" with any animal, cats or dogs, with laser pointers. No matter how hard or how long they try, they can never catch it, and it causes them anxiety.

This is true with dogs but not cats. Cats (indoor ones) will hunt for sport and not the kill. That's why so many owners have experienced their cats bringing them live mice. The cat plays with them, doesn't kill right away. They are little monsters. Dogs on the other hand always hunt for the satisfying moment of the catch. The laser offers no reward and will absolutely fuck with them.

Like the other reply said, I brought in a stray 2 years ago. He could give a fuck about the laser. The other two merrily chase it, then go about their day after playtime.

You're misguided on this. Cats want to catch things as well.

Even when hunting for sport, they want to catch things at some point. Laser pointers teach them that catching prey is impossible. It's not a good animal toy at all. Terrible, in fact.
