I don't have any issues with your preferences or how you identify yourself.

However, I wish to point out that, if you don't want other men around your intimate relationships, then what you probably should look for is a monogamous, exclusive relationship with one woman. As opposed to a poly relationship. Polyamourous women, almost by definition, are going to be open to relationships with other partners, including men.

You could find a "closed V" arrangement with two women and you as the hinge. But again, that's an exclusive relationship. If you expect to be open to date around with other women, well, expect and accept that there are going to be men involved in your partner's lives too.

heterosexual

I do not enjoy other men in or around my relationships.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

This isn't "heterosexual poly." Heterosexual poly would be a polyamorous man who does not want to have sexual/romantic relationships with another man. it's an OPP that you want to apply to any woman you sleep with. Good luck with that.

I'm actually quite curious now. As you've been unable to understand for yourself why you don't "want another man in the picture at all," perhaps you can expand on what exactly you don't want.

Is it biological? As in, any person with a penis? Would you feel fine having your partners date a transgendered person? Would the transition process affect how you feel? How about cross-dressing? Genderqueer? How does the question of gender vs. sex affect this policy for you, if at all?

Perhaps by examining exactly what you don't want, you can come closer to understanding why you don't want it.

Ummmm this terminology implies that straight men who are okay with their female partners dating other men are somehow less straight for it. What you have here is a strong preference for a one-penis policy.

[–]FreeAdviceHere 17ポイント18ポイント  (14子コメント)

Your terminology is definitely playing a role in the reactions you're getting. There's no transitive gayness that makes your chosen wording sensible.

Your phrasing is...ignorant.

how edgy and new, a man who wants a bunch of women all to himself!

[–]spockfacethey/them, one end of a V 10ポイント11ポイント  (0子コメント)

No, I can personally confirm as a non-straight trans poly person that the sentiment you've seen directed at you here does not compare at all to the bigotry I've experienced because I'm not-straight and/or trans (and by the way, 'queer' is a slur, it's not yours to reclaim, and your saying it so freely as a straight man does not endear you to us).

We are skeptical of your relationship model. We feel it's definitely sexist, probably homophobic, and probably transphobic. If you think it's okay to say that's the same as homophobia/transphobia when you haven't experienced either (and in fact have said transphobic things in this very thread!), I have one thing to say to you: GTFO.

[–]quin_violet 16ポイント17ポイント  (8子コメント)

lol @ this thread right now, especially the fact that the OP thought he and his OPP would be welcomed with open arms.

OP: "Being the only dude in my extended poly network is awesome! Gigantic fucking harem, here I come! Thanks, r/poly, for letting me be me!"

r/poly: "Are you fucking kidding us? gtfo with this bullshit"

Women aren't commodities to be traded, and that's something that I, as a queer polyamorous woman, have to deal with all the time. It's why I, as a rule, won't date hetero couples, especially ones who don't have their shit together in terms of allowing their partner to have autonomy over their relationships. Nine times out of ten, the relationship tends to be focused on the attention and desire of the man in the equation, and that's just shitty. I think it's super hypocritical and shitty to say that YOU can sleep with someone you're attracted to (which is apparently, only women), but that those women you're sleeping with must ONLY be attracted to YOU, and no other man. It's misogynistic as shit. Women are not your property. I just don't see how you can't see why many women and people in the poly community would be annoyed by your predatory behavior, to be honest.

[–]slutmemaybe 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

I literally can't wrap my head around someone holding this position ("I'm poly, but if you're interested in having relationships with other men I'll break up with you") -- not as a position for a very particular set of circumstances, but their general stance on all of their relationships -- and being a good partner.

I am very curious about how the OP's partners have felt about this stance. Whether or not they actually wanted to date other men.

[–]revisu 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

I don't think you're being unreasonable. You're very clear about what you're uncomfortable with, and I respect that. Similarly, a lot of the responses you're getting are being very clear about what they're uncomfortable with, so don't write them off as vitriol.

I'm curious: to what extent does your discomfort with male metamours feel "set in stone"? And if a meta-metamour was male, would that be a problem?

[–]oliviathecfit's a kind of...crown shape? 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Ew. Just...ew, that's all I can really say. I'm with two guys, one of them is even straight, and he feels nothing like that at all. He'll even go to bed early so my other boyfriend and I can have some solo time.

This isn't an alt so I don't want to get too into it but, long story short, we're an LDR and he'll be down for threesomes when we meetup in real life one day but he prefers to not do the whole over Skype thing in a group because he's decided it's kind of odd to have his best friend's (yes, as an added bonus, they're best friends in real life) dick in the corner of his screen.

That's heterosexual polyamory. My monogamous boyfriend seems to understand polyamory more than you do. Not whatever this is that you're demanding of your """"girlfriends"""" (harem).

(That's all I can say, I say, and the proceed to go on a miniature rant.)

If this was a woman describing being the hinge of an MFM relationship, with both men exclusive to her, I don't think people would delve into the premise of the relationship quite so much.

Yes, certain relationship models might appear unequal - but they work for some folks.

[–]girlaboutoaktownearnest contrarian slut 12ポイント13ポイント  (2子コメント)

I actually have nothing against OPPs or OVPs when all partners happily agree to them and no one feels like they're "missing out". The problem is that the OP here refuses to question why, is apparently a highly privileged dude who thinks he's somewhere on the oppressed scale for being a traditionally insecure sexist dude. That's fucking obnoxious.

[–]TTTT27 -4ポイント-3ポイント  (1子コメント)

I don't think he said anything in his post to make himself appear "highly privileged". Maybe he is privileged, maybe he is not. Nor did I read anything that would lead me to think he is a "traditionally insecure sexist" person.

I can say that, in polyamory community, rightly or wrongly, people are somewhat suspicious of exclusive FMF arrangements. I think that is what he was bringing up. I see no reason for all the vitriol.

[–]Gr1mreaper86Polyfi: Married+1 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

I disagree. Polyfidelity is looked upon respectfully here and in some cases they are FMF like in mine. Granted we're open to a fourth, a male, but have yet to find one so we're an exclusive FMF right now until then. I have yet to receive any backlash from this and triads and V's work here all the time. In general I don't see anyone describing their triad as closed do to heterosexual orientation though which is the issue I think most people are having here.

[–]leakybloodsink -4ポイント-3ポイント  (7子コメント)

I personally find it insulting that so much of everything here is so negative. I mean think the OP's policy is nonsensicle but it is being practiced in a very honest and forthcoming way.

If someone explained to me that they couldn't be in a relationship with someone who had kids, I said that was fine and we dated, and then I adopted a child, I would 100percent understand them politely removing themself from the relationship. The same goes for this situation.

But that is fine. Be like all those people who shame polyamorists as being sluts, perverts, noncommitent. Be the very thing that does you wrong.

[–]cannakitty 7ポイント8ポイント  (6子コメント)

Those scenarios aren't comparable

[–]Gr1mreaper86Polyfi: Married+1 -3ポイント-2ポイント  (5子コメント)

How are they not? If you tell someone you don't want to have a kid and then they want a kid so you break it off there are a lot of reasons for this. Prior understanding for one, also kids change a lot of things in a relationship.

This is true of OP's scenario too. If, prior to getting in the relationship, the OP tells them he has a OPP and they agree to that and then want another guy. Then it's perfectly reasonable for him to want to break it off with that prior understanding in place. His reasons for doing so are what people here in the poly community are calling into question and why they are giving him such a hard time. He could have valid reasons but has yet to explain any of his reasons so it simply comes off as hidden issues with OP. Lots of things change in a relationship when a child is thrown into the mix; this is also true when adding another partner. Maybe the OP is a little selfish and doesn't like to split his time...maybe the op doesn't want to share a girl he's dating with another man because he likes being the center of attention and doesn't want to have to wait on another persons time. Maybe he doesn't want to have to schedule around another man. Is that better then him being a misogynist? Is it better that maybe he's just selfish? Who knows? OP has yet to explain why he feels the way he does though so it just comes off as him being an ass. He might be an ass even if we understood him but right now everyone is assuming the worst because he's yet to explain himself and he comes off as ignorant and possibly misogynistic depending on his motives for why he feels the way he does.

[–]FreeAdviceHere 7ポイント8ポイント  (3子コメント)

Maybe the OP is a little selfish and doesn't like to split his time...maybe the op doesn't want to share a girl he's dating with another man because he likes being the center of attention and doesn't want to have to wait on another persons time. Maybe he doesn't want to have to schedule around another man.

His objections are specifically to having male metamours, so it isn't just as simple as wanted uncomplicated scheduling.

I'm wracking my brain for an explanation for saying "this woman is attractive as long as she isn't too close to another penis. She might become attractive again if she weren't near any other male genitals. Oh, and by the way, this is obviously not something that happens if the genders are reversed" that isn't somehow based in some form of sexism or homophobia.

There are certainly people who are comfortable with that dynamic, and the OP has obviously been fortunate enough to find them and develop relationships with them. So good on them for finding each other. I do think it is a sign of being somewhat blind to the implications and the experiences of those affected by those cultural attitudes to have written this post, in this way, expecting a very different response.

[–]Gr1mreaper86Polyfi: Married+1 5ポイント6ポイント  (2子コメント)

I didn't think about it that way, but you are right. If he added another woman it would complicate scheduling as well so it's not even about adding another person in terms of scheduling.

When I posted that reply I was really reaching to be opened minded of OP's situation but you're right...scheduling is an issue regardless of gender so that shouldn't matter. I don't understand OP's motives any more then you do. I'm trying to without jumping on the hate train...it's hard though because I'm wracking my brain just like you are.

Started typing this and realized halfway through it's turned into a rant. I still wanted to post it because I think what I'm saying it important... but I want to be upfront again that I'm not really speaking to you directly, as much as this whole thread in general. I don't want it to come across as too personal, because that's not how I mean it. I think you have been making a good effort at restraint, for what it's worth ; )

I'm confused about why people feel they must understand his motivations before rendering judgement. Personally I think he could be more introspective too - but I think that's an entirely separate conversation from "is this acceptable."

And I think it is. IMO OP is taking the burden of his having this viewpoint entirely onto himself. He's recognized that this is a boundary for him - for whatever reason - and at least as he describes it, it sounds like he's been unfailingly ethical in that regard. He's upfront about it. He doesn't demand other people change to suit his needs. If it becomes a problem, he makes a personal choice to end the relationship as is everyone's right.

So yeah, it's a healthy way to approach things. Maybe OP isn't PC, maybe he has a lot of issues that he's dealing with. Everyone has issues that they deal with - few do so in such a responsible way. I'm far more concerned with people acting ethically, rather than what they might think or feel.

The vitriol in this thread is about how OP shouldn't be allowed to hold this "disgusting" opinion. Heck no to that- free speech is hugely important to me, and I consider it most important to defend speech that is personally offensive, particularly when it is reasonable. I think OP has been saintly in his responses, as far as I can see - returning again and again to the issue at hand, and refusing to make things personal. I think he's done himself proud.

But no - I don't get the logic of his position either. It is inherently sexist in that it treats men and women differently, I totally agree.

The biggest difference is that I feel the make personal attacks on OP for this does no one any good. People are grand-standing, I think - they don't really care about OP deep down, but they've been taught that attacking people who make sexist remarks is a good way to assure the world that they themselves are in no way sexist. Which is ridiculous on the face of it - people often act sexist even though they make lots of noise about being very non-sexist. (Privilege can be very invisible, so I'm not condemning those people either... I'm well aware that I probably hold a ton of unconsciously privileged beliefs myself.) I really dislike the notion that people feel all these -isms are excuses to form lynch mobs. "Cast out the beam in thine own eye..." plus "he who is without sin..."

/rant

I apologize in advance if I'm getting too worked up - I think I've kept it impersonal and professional... if a bit animated, but I do plan on looking at it again when I've calmed down a bit. Just in case...

[–]Gr1mreaper86Polyfi: Married+1 -1ポイント0ポイント  (0子コメント)

I think you did great. Actually I feel like you backed me up a bit and I appreciate that. Are his views controversial, yes, but just because we don't understand them doesn't mean they're wrong. I was starting to feel ganged up on myself for even questioning whether or not I should be so hard on the guy.

[–]leakybloodsink 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

You and several others are beating the drum of, "he hasn't explained himself so he deserves being misunderstood."

However before this chant arose, he was already being attacked. He has politely explained a handleful of details in response to other posters but ultimately what you get is what you ask for, and everyone here assumed him a villain so that is what he will be to everyone.

Ask politely if you even give a damn about having a polite conversation instead expecting him to have a perfect defense to all this bullshit. Sorry if you feel like I'm taking all that out on you, but seriously you are only one of several who have made those statements. I'm directing this at anybody who expects answers, but presented themself as a total dick.
