I'm not seeing what the problem with the screenshot of the linked picture is. It's a joke sub using exaggerated 1990s-esque poor UI design. Not sure what it has to do with trolling...

I might be confused here, it seems to be the FrontPage sub. I mustbe missing something.

It isn't. The front page is found at reddit.com, someone just registered a sub called /r/FrontPage and slapped a bad CSS on it. There are tons of those. Some are created just because someone wants to try out what is possible with reddit's CSS.

On trolling. This is an pretty interesting article: http://www.alternet.org/news-amp-politics/i-was-libertarian-internet-troll-how-i-turned-my-mind-around

That's probably a joke because Microsoft FrontPage was a popular and terrible "user-friendly" website editor from the late 90s.

O crap the light bulb went on when you reminded me of Microsoft Frontpage. That makes more sense now for a name perspective.

It's usually a combination of the following IMO:

  • boredom

  • low self-esteem

  • possible mental illness but not always

  • difficulty with empathy

  • difficulty with social skills

  • difficulty with appropriate coping mechanisms

Also, people on the internet don't exist. At least, not in any real, visceral sense.

You mean the effects of anonymity? Yeah, that's true, but I think most people aren't dedicated trolls. I assumed OP was talking about more than the occasional bad comment.

Why is it that every time some does something some else doesn't approve of, it's suddenly time to jump on the mental illness blame train? This is reminding me of that gun control thread from yesterday that the mods thankfully deleted

If you believe SRSers are inherently irrational, you should probably get off this sub.

Trolling incredibly fragile white duders is what I live for

I am going to take this seriously, for that what we are here for.

Does it give you pleasure or is it a malicious feeling you get when you know you are making people angry?

Is this in relation to the Punchable Faces event?

    [–]Bonejob[S] 0ポイント1ポイント  (2子コメント)

no, what did I miss with the Punchable Faces event?

    [–]fondue13 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

The head mod gave it to some SRS members, who totally changed the sub (kind of like your example picture above), intentionally angering the members there. You can see for yourself if you go to the sub, but that's the general gist of things. It was one of those "lol u mad?" things, textbook trolling.

not to be pedantic, but /u/agentlame is srdbroke, not srs. the current punchablefaces mod team is srdbroke crew, which includes some srsers.

Sometimes when you're lonely, you'll take a negative social interaction over none at all. That I'm convinced is part of it.

    [–]Bonejob[S] [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

That is an interesting thought. Loneliness, and depression are tight bed fellows. I can see the seed of trolling in that.

    [–][deleted] [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

when you're lonely, you also tend to get angry. and with the confluence of those two things, outright dismissal of ordinary and/or moral standards of behaviour can quite "reasonably" (speaking from personal experience) become not an outlet but a goal, with a kind of self-actualisation attached. a negative reaction can be a form of affirmation (which doesn't necessarily make you feel great). you know you're in the wrong, and you don't like it, but it feels very good in a very unpleasant way. just to be clear, i've never been a troll, and i've mainly experienced this selfsame attitude even whilst having tons of good supportive friends. you shouldn't view the mindset of a troll as being unique to trolls

just to add though, what you're literally typing about trolls makes a lot of sense. but glancing at the image you posted doesn't reveal to me much that would normally be frustrating about """""""troll culture""""""
