エーゲ海に浮かぶギリシャの島々に、大量の難民が押し寄せている。8月26日には、約2500人のシリア難民を乗せた巨大フェリー「エレフテリオス・ヴェニゼロス号」が、ギリシャの首都アテネに到着した。ギリシャの通信社ANA-MPAが伝えている。

難民の対応に苦慮する島の地元自治体の支援のために、ギリシャ政府が約1週間前にこのフェリーをチャーターした。このフェリーは難民をギリシャの島々からアテネのピレウス港まで移送する交通手段としてだけでなく、難民の収容施設やシリア難民の身元確認センターとしても機能している。

国連難民高等弁務官事務所（UNHCR）の統計によると、今年に入ってからすでに約16万人の難民がギリシャに入国している。これは2014年と比べて約4倍だ。そのほとんどが、シリアやアフガニスタンから紛争を逃れてやって来た難民で、命の危険を冒してトルコから東エーゲ海を越え、コス島、サモス島、キオス島、レスボス島、カリムノス島、レロス島にたどり着いた。これらの島々で、多くの難民は公共スペースでの野宿を余儀なくされ、医療もない不衛生な状態に置かれている。

ロイター通信によると、シリアから逃れてきた人々は難民認定されているため、他国からの難民に比べて優先的にフェリーに乗船できるという。

エレフテリオス・ヴェニゼロス号は、8月19日に初めてコス島から難民を乗せて出発して以降、ほぼ毎日運航している。

アテネに到着した難民のほとんどは、セルビアから西ヨーロッパへ入るために、到着後すぐに国境へ向かう。アテネに留まりたい人は、アテネに隣接するエレオナスに新しく建設されたレセプションセンターで一時的に保護される。

ギリシャを支援するため、欧州委員会は、難民問題に取り組む国連に270万ユーロ（約3.7億円）の支援金を準備する計画だ。
