Its not rocket science, these people just subscribe to a different economic theory then you apparently do. The majority of americans work for large corperations, when those corporations do well they hire more people and when they do badly they fire people. So the average american does whatever they can to make sure the company that hires them doesnt do badly.

Its not like theres one answer to how to run an economy, and the research isnt clear on whether more government spending and high taxes or less government spending and low taxes is the way to go. Just because someone disagrees with you doesnt make them wrong, its just a difference of opinion

I'd expect the thing to worry more about would be the handful of crazy people that enjoy it enough to just say "screw it" and keep trying to kill you after it's over.

Though, if I were trying to kill someone inside a safehouse and had plenty of time, it might easy enough to just seal them in there. That'd be a really interesting trial, too: murder was legal for those 24-hours but they died after due to actions taken strictly within the 24-hours where it was legal.
