Please, oh please let this movie not suck. It has all the ingredients for greatness: one of the best blockbuster directors in the world, a talented screenwriter working with great source material, a superb cast. And the marketing has been on point so far.

a superb cast

You can say that again, this cast is fucking stacked

a superb cast

Not sure how I feel about Aksel Hennie going from being in every fucking Norwegian movie in the last years to every goddamn movie on this entire planet. I mean, he can act and shit, but calm down dude.

Hehe, he's the Gerard Depardeu of Norway

Mmmm. Kate Mara and Jessica Chastain.

Michael Pena is fuckin awesome too.

That sexy smirk of Jessica Chastain's in that group pic...

It must suck for her having every internet comment be about her sexuality

And well cast. I saw the trailer at the theater before I decided to read the book, and as I read it I could figure out which character several of the actors were supposed to be.

(And I'm really excited to see Kristen Wiig in a more serious role, although Annie still has plenty of comedic moments.)

And the marketing has been on point so far.

But they shouldn't have called it viral video, before it's went viral... it will, but it's not the definition of the word. Meh...

[–]Boojah 6

The idea, as I understand it, is that the "viral videos" are real viral videos in the universe that the film takes place in. The first video, the crew introduction, is more clear on that than this one.

it also has composer Harry Gregson-Williams, so the score is settled

Awesome. Loved his score for Gone Baby Gone, so I'm expecting some heavy feels from this one.

I would think the consulting has a huge influence on a movie like this, not just a big name director. If this movie ends up being amazing, I hope the proper people get the proper credit.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson isn't going to be in a sci-fi movie and allow it to be scientifically incorrect.

I have high hopes.

FYI the author himself has pointed out inaccuracies in his book in his AMA

I keep telling myself, no matter what, I'll always have the book. Any you know what, that's good enough for me.

A nice movie would be awesome though

Are we supposed to make this go viral because it's called a viral video?

I mean, I guess they could have.. uhh... posted it with some random youtube account with no uploads, and then in a week, said "HAHA SURPRISE! THIS WAS ACTUALLY MARKETING FOR THE MARTIAN!"

When I think of viral marketing, the property that pops into my mind is Cloverfield. I believe that team did the best viral marketing to date. Studios could learn a lot from what they accomplished.

[–]botched_rest_hold 5ポイント6ポイント  (1子コメント)

I'm still pissed about that. I spent a lot of time working on ilovebees only for it to be a fucking Halo thing.

That's how I feel about LOST. What a waste of myyyy liifffeeeeee still mad

Yeah, but I think for the Martian, the straight forward approach works better. It's a big mission in universe, makes sense that it would be made visible to the public.

Cloverfield worked so well because it was something you weren't supposed to know about. Every tiny piece that was learned was information the audience had stolen from a shady organization. It was exciting because they didn't want you to know.

For the Martian, NASA wants you to know about the mission, they want everyone watching when the crew gets there. A lot of the later drama in the book stems from the fact that the whole world has its eye on the mission, and that if he isn't rescued, the whole world will know. So I think that "straightforward publicity videos" are the way to go, especially since we don't get to spend that much time with the crew in an optimistic setting once the action begins, creating a nice contrast.

Edit: no autocorrect, NASA, not Nascar.

Spot on. By that time we would have so much footage of astronauts in the ISS etc. That the little video logs spread out amongst the publicity makes sense. Even Col. Chris Hayfield only made the occasional majority publicised videos. Then they can give us updates from the ship like avoiding asteroids etc (focusing of course on the amazing team at mission control) and then by the time the film comes we can jump into the film knowing about and being able to empathize with the crew.

Can't wait to see how good this goes, would really make like a mini series before the film, extended universe kinda

I think the idea is that these videos are released in the movie's universe and went viral there. Kind of like how a lot of video's of the ISS go viral in the real world.

Yeah, that's really bugged me

I think by "viral video" they just mean that the video is framed as if it were a video from the universe of the movie, rather than being a "trailer". It's not precisely what "viral video" means, but I think that's what they mean.

[–]botched_rest_hold 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

They've had like 3-4 other videos called "VIRAL" go to the top of /r/movies.

This place is 90% astroturf.

The title is given by the uploader of that trailer channel. I don't think the studio itself would've blatantly called it "viral video" if they were releasing it themselves.

No, it called "viral" because they want it to be spread like viral videos, not that they think its going to become some viral sensation. For example, being posted here on reddit with us commenting on it is what they wanted when they made it.

Loving the marketing for this. Hope it doesnt disappoint.

I really wish this was real and not just a movie. It would be nice if humanity good look outwards for a while and actually try to build something outside Earth instead or warring within.

You wish we accidentally stranded someone in Mars?

EDIT: Phone typo, on Mars, not in Mars.

Er...didn't know that happened in this movie/book my b. But really I meant start a colony off Earth.

The whole book is about one guy getting stranded on Mars during an emergency evacuation and his survival/the world's attempts to rescue him. Not really about colonization, but I know what your saying.

Technically he does colonize Mars.

Well, he survives on Mars. I don't know that that counts as colonization. Colonization implies a large-scale migration of one or more groups of people to an unsettled area.

It's addressed in the book that once you start cultivating soil and growing crops you have technically colonized an area.

In your face, Neil Armstrong!

I hope you get all the points. You posted before I could.

I don't really think it's worth arguing about. I know what you're saying. I guess I'm just coming at it from a sociocultural and anthropological viewpoint. Spoilers ahead

Watney certainly "cultivated" Mars in order to temporarily survive while he was there, but nothing he did has any sort of permanence. Even before the end of the book, all of the crops were dead. He just had the small supply of potatoes that he had left. If he'd been stuck there any longer, he'd have died. He had nothing else to cultivate. He had no more soil he could use. No more plants he could use. Colonization implies that there will be a continuation of the development of life and growth and society in an area. Not one guy, keeping himself alive until he's out of options.

On an unrelated note a Colony Off Earth sounds like a indie band name.

Hell, I'd volunteer for that. Worth a one-way ticket.

I'd prefer it to be on Mars, but as long as you got there I guess.

Edit: Mihawker you fucker, you ruined my fun :/

Yea.. I wouldn't mind it. If I had to die like that it would be an honor.

Agreed. Maybe if the microwave thruster experiment that everyone was excited about last month gets developed, it'll happen much faster. I'd love to see it happen in my lifetime.

I liked the tribute Tyson did to Jack Horkheimer with his last line. I remember he had a similar sign-off on his astronomy show on PBS. I think this is going to be a good movie.

They seem to be capturing the key concepts that made the book such a great read: primarily Watney's fearless smart-ass attitude, and the brutal nature of space and mars (and the technology used to survive in those environments).

And if I may throw out a half-spoiler alert:, so if they stick to the same plot, I have faith that it's going to be great.

Exactly how I feel about it. I read the book this last Saturday. I started in the morning and couldn't put it down. When I finished that night I went and watched the trailer again. If they can keep a bit of the science and most of the wit, it's gonna be excellent!

[–]Bananas_n_Pajamas 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

The movie will do well because it's a roller-coaster of a book. Just when things look good, something goes wrong, then there's hope again (rinse, repeat). People will literally be on the edge of their seat the whole time. Plus, the humor Watney brings.

I'm really excited for this!

Idk, there's no indication that they cast anyone for the Chinese space program...

They would be smart to keep a major twist out of trailers.

So no Event Horizon Hellraiser ending?! :(

The great thing is I've recognized so many scenes from the book and haven't seen anything I haven't recognized. I'm very sure that it's going to be a very faithful adaptation.

What do you call the martian then? That's a pretty big twist. Oh look an alien!

Ridley Scott did the same for Prometheus with a TED talk by Peter Wayland. It's pretty smart marketing for 'near future' sci fi movies.

Had me so excited for that movie.

They even grayed Dr. Tyson's hair to make him look like an older 2020's version of him.

Love the marketing. Hate the title go the video though.

Ridley won't fuck up if he has a good material to work on. And Andy Weir himself said the script pretty much sticks to the book. So yeah, I've got high hopes. Could be Ridley's comeback (although I don't think his recent movies sucked).

[–]botched_rest_hold 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

If you "love marketing" you should probably swallow bleach.

One of the best casts this year, a great director, and possibly the best marketing we have seen for a while! In my top 5 anticipated films. I highly recommend reading the book, or listening tomato the audio book, they are both superb.

Ok, I've got a bottle of ketchup. Do I just hold up to my ear?

No you're doing it wrong. Ketchup barely has tomatoes in it anymore. Try marinara sauce it should come in better with that.

C'mon man, do you even audio quality? You gotta get a good set of Bose headphones and plug them directly into the tomato for the best sound.

That works, but the ketchup pasteurization process causes audio feedback. If you want the highest audio fidelity you need to get the farm fresh, preferably from Portugal

And adding in some French fries involves the reception and broadcast waves. It's a rudimentary tactic utilized by only the highest of NASA scientists. After all, Mark needs to survive quite a lot of time without some things haha.

Hahahaha! Oh man, that autocorrect. I'm not even going to fix it, that is hilarious. I just meant *listen to the audio book.

Alright I've got the audiobook plugged into the tomato but it's not making any sound... Can you help troubleshoot?

you need potato for is make battery comrade

What do I look like, a millionaire? I can't afford tomato and potato.

Someone else mentioned that the pure tomato frequency might not be up to pay because of the preservatives and chemical treatment. The Italian NASA team informed us that marinara sauce might be much more effective. Also something about Portugal haha.

Someone else mentioned that the pure tomato frequency might not be up to pay because of the preservatives and chemical treatment.

I thought those treatments made the tomato more wealthy, so it could pay its own way??

R. C. Bray, who did the narration did an amazing job. The audiobook gives you the chills. Btw, how do you get the tomatoes to stick in the ear?

Holy shit, that is so cool. I would have never expected this

Neil is amazing. Even if he was talking about some dumb, random topic, it would seem cool.

That was amazing. Ridley Scott's later films seems to have great marketing leading up to their release.

I think visually it will be stunning. A lot has been said about all that was wrong with "Prometheus", but I am still in awe of the effects and overall look of that film.

[–]Mark_the_Martian 6ポイント7ポイント  (3子コメント)

The key difference is that Prometheus was(in part) written by Scott, this film is based on a best selling book so they've got the story nailed.

I feel your comment implies that any best selling book has a story on point. It doesn't.

That being said The Martian was a really good read!

I just hope they polish the dialogue a lot. I love the book a lot, but while Watney's journal-entry monologue is superb, a lot of the dialogue is painful to read at times.

Saw it in IMAX 3D. It was an unreal cinema experience, visually.

Yeah, the Prometheus marketing was on point. I love these "in-universe" type videos.

Wow, Star Citizen is really coming together.

[–]comrade_leviathan 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

It feels like the future is almost here!

2029? Niel Degrasse Tyson has really aged well.

I thought the same. I wish they had aged him a bit. 20 years isn't 10 years.

They greyed his hair a bit.

Actually per this timeline it's more like 2032~2038 or so because in the book I believe its the 3rd mission but looks like the movie may have changed it to 2nd mission. anyway my first thought was Damn Niel looks good for being in his mid 70's

Putting "Viral Video" in the title does not make a video viral. Its like calling a restaurant "famous" on the opening night. Nevertheless this is an excellent promo. It gave me goosebumps.

I think the idea is that it's supposed to be a viral video about the actual Ares mission from the 2020's (or 30s?) when this movie takes place. Or I hope so, because oterhwise this is a little weird.

It's a shame that space exploration isn't given the resources it truly deserves. Nothing fires the human imagination and lifts our spirit like exploring the unknown. (possibly due to our history as a species?) Just imagine how with nothing more than what we spend in a month on some government programs, we could live in a world of daily mission launches, or like in Gattaca, where it is even routine for a dozen or more launches to happen in a single day. How uplifting would it be to live in a world where on any given day a dozen missions, some manned and some unmanned are launched into the void. I want to live in that world, damnit.

“If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.”

― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

It really isn't surprising, though. A fractional minority of humans are responsible for making space flight happen, most everyone else is still worshiping ancient gods, arguing over this month's political rhetoric or living in shacks. Unless there is a military or profit motive behind it, the people with power aren't going to give space exploration the kind of resources we think it deserves. It's like our technological potential is far beyond our collective maturity.

Because there are a surprising amount of people who think like this: "Mad? I think it's sad that there are actually people out there that are so disillusioned. Take a minute out the day sometimes bruv, talk to a girl maybe, get a puppy, say a prayer if that's your thing. Space travel is far less important than the things we have to love and protect here on this earth :')"

I knew you'd be here to say this, always trolling. I was simply saying that there are more important things to do here on this earth than exploring space. That doesn't mean that NASA hasn't or won't do great things here on this earth and hasn't made great contributions. I know you're probably a rich STEM major since you constantly post in /r/telescopes , but there really are homeless and hungry out there who need help. I was simply stating my priorities.

I really wish NASA did marketing like this. If this movie succeeds like Gravity, Interstellar, and the like have maybe we'll get to see space back in the forefront.

It would be awesome if NASA promoted their missions this way,

As if they have budget for that. I think they already rely heavily on volunteer (free) contributions for promoting awareness for various projects. At least space is popular with hollywood right now.

Startalk is still going in 20 years!

Yesss!!!

[–]comrade_leviathan 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Seriously, if we ever finally get our asses in gear about exploring the Solar System we're going to need someone like NDT to be the MC for it.

Is this the original of this? "Viral video" with 600 view count... hmmm.

Youtube stops the views ticker temporarily if a video gets enough activity in a small amount of time. They do a quick check to make sure it's not getting viewbotted, and once everything is cleared the number is unlocked and set to the correct number.

[–]Kekpew 3

Not anymore. Youtube changed their system so the views are updated more frequently.. The whole 301 views system is not there anymore.

Except the view count is 2493 and not 301 currently. Not viral imo

It's on a trailers account, so no. They are just denoting what kind of video it is in the marketing strategy. It's a viral video, as opposed to a trailer or teaser. Most probably nothing you see in this video will be in the movie.

Really cool clip - why do they call it viral though? Seems like an annoying trend lately...

Probably because it is intended to be a viral marketing video, so in this case the word "viral" denotes what it is intended to be, not necessarily what it turned out to be. But since we'll all probably go share it on Facebook now, it likely will be viral very shortly.

It has Neil deGrasse Tyson in it, so they probably just assumed.

[–]A_600lb_Tunafish 2ポイント3ポイント  (3子コメント)

Has there ever been an accurate representation of an asteroid field in any work of fiction ever?

They're like hundreds of thousands of miles apart from each other, this isn't Star Fox 64 damn it.

I caught that too...the chances of an asteroid hitting Hermes is quite frankly astronomical

All they need to do is a barrel roll and they will be fine.

There is a Tested.com "The Talking Room" video interview (and a podcast made from it) where Adam Savage interviews Andy Weir. It's a great interview and insight into the science behind the story.

Adam brings up a fantastic point that the book and the story are being billed as "Science Fiction" and in fact almost 100% of the technology in the story is factual and can be made right now in today's world. There's really only 1 piece of equipment in the story that's not in production right now in some size or form.

So that begs the question; "Is this really Science Fiction or is the story actually just Fiction".

[–]Opira 3

I could listen to Niel Degrasse Tyson for hours that voice is so soothing.

Damnit -- "biological history" almost presupposes that Mars once harbored life. That is really cool.

So happy that they're getting the tone for this movie so perfect. This marketing is almost exactly what I hoped it would be like back when I read the book!

This book was incredible, Damon seems like the perfect Watney... please be as great as I am telling everyone this should be!

He does, I'm not particularly a fan of Damon but it seems like a very credible match.

This book was incredible

eh it was good. not incredible.

"Viral video" in the title.

Loving the fucking shit out of the COSMOS: A SPACE-TIME ODYSSEY FEEL.

[–]Eggs_Cumberbatch 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

I don't even care, I'm letting my expectations get so high for this movie.

I wonder if NDT will play (more or less) himself if they make a movie from Seveneves.

Would you like to know more?

First I thought the grey hair look on NDJ is just lighting, turned out it was a nice detail that was taken into consideration by R.Scott because the movie is set in the future.

This was freaking amazing. Great book. Can't wait for this!

After seeing Michael Pena in Ant Man all I could think about is that it must have been one long ass trip to Mars with him telling all those crazy random stories.

There was another astronomy guy who used to always end his shows "keep looking up" Stargazer was the show, and it used to come on after Dr. Who in the 80's. That show got me to see Halley's Comet. Anyway, it just struck a chord that he ended the segment with those words.

I feel like playing kerbal space program now

Based off the marketing they've absolutely nailed the casting and atmosphere from the book. Hope it pays off!

I like that we are getting these big space epics every year now, I feel like they have been gone for a while and now we are getting back into it. Now let's hope the space opera is gonna make a comeback too.

Do I hear big budget BSG movie in the future? I hope so.

Noooo! Nothing can take the place of the rebooted TV series. It won't be the same without Olmos as Admiral Adama.

I agree. Nothing can take the place of the show or Olmos. Hopefully he would be in it. I just want more awesome space battles. Kind of like Blood and Chrome. Idk. Just something to give me more BSG!

[–]Guboj 0

Damn, now I wish this was real.

I would KILL for a Red Mars adaptation. I thoroughly enjoyed the books, and after seeing this trailer, I'm convinced it'll work. I'm not sure about a movie, perhaps a TV series instead?

Beyond excited for this. I loved the book. It was actually as an adult the only book I have ever read from cover to cover. I have ADD and just have never been able to get into a book before like this.

wish this wasn't for a movie but for real life =(

Goddamn, that was one of the best marketing ideas I've seen. Super cool.

This is well done...I won't be surprised when clickbait sites, etc. grab on to it as real news.

If you haven't read the book yet I highly suggest you do now. It is very good. The Martian.

The Martian

Neil Degrasse Tyson

reddit is about to explode

Last year Interstellar, now The Martian. Love this trend. It's like a breath of fresh air in all these sequel/prequel/reboot nonsence.

'Viral Video' before it becomes viral.

I think it's funny. The money and time spent to craft this beautiful little promo, and all it took was some dingus at the very last step of everything to fuck up and put "viral" in the youtube title.

I think a lot of people in the scientific community see this movie as a great way to get people excited about space again. The best thing we can do to incite passion for space exploration is ignite people's imaginations.

NASA, NDT - I wouldn't be surprised to see others pushing this movie. It's a great marketing piece for space exploration in general, even if the premise starts with a mission gone awry.

That was totally wicked!!!

I can't take Kate Mara seriously as an astronaut. She looks like a high school sophomore.

It feels so real! Wow, I am actually crying.

Neil Degrasse Tyson is so articulate!

I feel like dude has been hamming it up a little too much. Like he's going to become a caricature of Carl Sagan.

They are really going all out with the marketing for this movie. And I love it. I wish more big budget sci-fi movies were getting made and if I was in charge, I would give NASA a cut of the profits.. If congress won't fund NASA, we will just crowdsource it through sci-fi.

....then everything changed with the Fire Nation attacked.

The spaceship Hermes in this movie looks so unrealistic. We probably will not be building a ship like that for another century. It is way to big and expensive to build. Pure science-fiction.

And if we do happen to go to mars in a few decades it will be in those awfully small Apollo like capsules...

[–]Karriz 0

I agree Hermes is a bit of an overkill, but we surely won't be going to Mars in tiny capsules either.

More realistic approach is a ship that can be built with two-three launches of SLS or similar rocket. Something like this

Basically a big habitation module and a booster stage. No huge rotating ring.

They should have made Neil Degrasse Tyson an older version of himself as all of this takes place ~20 years from today.

The promotional material for this movie is pretty good.

First the crew interview before mission and this message! Let's hope the movie lives up to everyone's expectations.

OMG i am sooooo excited

Man, Neil didn't age at all in the passing 15 years.

This outlook for the future is why I am working really hard to be an engineer at NASA

i just watched an awesome promotional video that showed an incredible imaginative grasp on good no-bullshit advertising.

and yet most of the comments are focused on the word viral. This is what people mean when they say the internet can be a petty and pathetic place.

I really appreciate that several of the teaser trailer things for this movie don't contain actual parts from the film so they don't give away the whole movie in the trailer like so many other trailers do

BONER MATERIAL!

Please don't suck, please don't suck!

I am so in love with how this is being done! The different videos about the crew and now this! I hope i get to experience something like this in my life time!

This should have been the original Trailer.

Good luck to this crew! I hope they make it safely!

I thought this was for reals

What a terrible trailer.

Considering it's the future, Neil Degrasse Tyson look pretty good for his age!

Is there a better quality video out there?
This one stutters and has ghosting/blended frames :\

Wow, this in no way reminds me of Cosmos. Nope, not in the slightest.

MARKETING! it's a thing.

This is great. Really well thought-out and well executed idea.

And listening to Neil DeGrasse Tyson talk is never a bad thing.

Did anyone else think this was like really corny?

High production value, world-famous personality, promotion for a multi-million dollar movie. Viral? Please.
