Hilary Clinton is coming to my school but I have class :(.

My Guns, Germs and Steel class is off to a great start. The professor has the passion of Jeff Winger, the politics of a stereotypical humanities prof, and a great sense of humor. In the first class he managed to make the class ready to rise in a revolution toward university vice presidents.

Bill Clinton visited my town back in 2000. The whole school turned out to see him, this being a big deal in Ireland at the time. As we were waiting for the Prez to make an appearance the then-popular Mamba No 5 was playing over the loudspeakers...

... or it was until it reached the classic line 'A little Monica in my life...'. At which point the record promptly cut out and a new song played. I assume someone from the Clinton camp was a bit sensitive over the whole Monica thing.

(Of course, 2000 would mean that /u/Quouar and the rest of the mods were probably about three at the time. Bill Clinton was a president back in the day and Monica... well, we'll tell you when you get older.)

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

I was 9. I remember Monica. -.-

But Bill Clinton came to my high school to speak in 2008 when Hillary was running for president. He was an hour late because he "stopped for barbecue," which seemed reasonable enough.

The passion of proffessor Jeff Winger or the passion of "we're going to find this pen" Jeff Winger?

"We're going to find this pen"

Those professors are the best. One of my undergrad professors prepared us to march on the main Purdue campud one time, our stand in for Rome.

What was your your almost revolution like?

You better be talking about shots and beers, because if you're going to start a revolution in the name of Purdue Pete, I'm assembling an international task force to stop you.

Sometimes that Pete, he looks right into you. Right into your eyes. You know the thing about Pete, he's got... lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'. Until he hammers ya and those black eyes roll over white.

Aha, finally I hit the exact time this thing goes up. I found out last weekend that my attempt to fact-check /u/Quouar 's infamous "Buffy the White Christmas Slayer" post is going to be somewhat harder than imagined.

The National Library here isn't open on Sundays, so last Saturday I was finally in town for a change (I normally only go on Sundays because there's free parking and all shops are open anyway) and decided to settle the matter once and for all.

The thought of being called a jerk by Quouar was enough motivation for me to have a look, it was a bonus that I like researching stuff, and it's a nice enough building for a casual visit anyway. But then I found out that the main library areas are only open until 12:45 on Saturdays. Sacre Blue! That's usually the time we tend to leave the house, and it will be a challenge to move that time forward significantly. So I'm afraid that question will remain unsettled for the near to long term... Curses, foiled again...

BTW why can't you be more like Scrappy, automod? I know you're previous gen tech, but come on, give us a joke. Or a good opening line. At least try to be less boring than my gran.

[–]TurnshroudMod abuse? More like mod amuse 4ポイント5ポイント  (3子コメント)

Trying to set off a fact checking trend, are we? Or are you leading the anti-/u/Quouar revolt?

[–]DirishTime travel agent for King Edward 2ポイント3ポイント  (2子コメント)

I already posted some comments about using data from the wrong area of Ireland in the original thread. But without the exact weather data from Dublin for Christmas 1838, the matter wasn't settled. So I needed access to an old Dublin newspaper before it could be settled once and for all, which are only in the National Library on microfilm. One day... one day...

BTW she has a 9:10 chance of being right by assuming it wasn't a white Christmas just going by historical weather data, so the odds are in her favour that she was right. But it was for the wrong reasons :).

The rumours about the Anti-Quouar League are nonsense. There is no such thing as the AQL and I'm not a founding member. I don't know what you're talking about.

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer[M] 3ポイント4ポイント  (1子コメント)

Ikea's coming to pick up their stupid bed and bring me a different one. I win.

Also, I went out to this bridge on Tuesday night. There's a million and a half bats living under the bridge, and around sunset, they all come out at once. It's spectacular and kind of magical. The whole night starts squeaking and flapping as bat after bat after bat pours out of this thing. It was fantastic.

I really like Austin, and it makes me happy that I made the right choice. :)

[–]Spartacus_the_trollThe burning of the the Library of Alexandria was from an STD. 1ポイント2ポイント  (2子コメント)

If you like bats, there are plenty around. Between Congress ave and Bracken cave, there are probably more bats than people in Texas.

Oh also this place was kind of neat in summer evenings.

Mods deleted the "Bad history on r/badhistory" post :( I wanted drama

[–]International_KBAt least three milli-Cromwells worth of oppression 6ポイント7ポイント  (0子コメント)

I was looking forward to that. The revisionist arguments had surged forth across Belgium, pushing for a decision on the 'finest soldier of WWI'. All that stood in their way was the established /r/badhistory narrative, preparing for a stand at the Marne on infiltration tactics. Who would win? Or would both get bogged down in (the details of) static trench warfare?

Then the mods intervened. Saving civilisation from a massacre that would stain the comments with the blood of a generation. Booooo! We want blood drama!

[–]pasunthrowaway 3ポイント4ポイント  (7子コメント)

Me too :( . As someone who never studied the military part of WW1, I don't know who I should believe now, I hoped the comments would make things clearer.

For any twitter using bad historians out there, Imma recommend Liam Hogan, a librarian, Irishman, and a One Man War on the Irish Slavery Myth (O.M.W.I.S.M.).

He's slaughtering fools with tweets like "Kiss me my slave owner were Irish" and "Neo-Confederates now confidently approaching journalists with "Irish slaves" disinformation"

If /r/badhistory was a real place, I'd want a statue of him put at the door (carved by Irish slaves of course).

Greetings BadHistoriers!

So I finally have a company that wants to fire me for a full-time position. However, they are subsidiary and need authorization from upper management to employ the new staff. Been waiting for this to happen for a few weeks. While this is happening I am still hunting for other work.

Also, I have noticed my level of fitness has really improved since I took up fencing a few months ago. I used to be only able to do 4 bouts, up to a maximum of 5 points per bout. Now I can 4 bouts, up to 10 points each. The breaks between each bout are getting shorter as well.

Second week at UGA for grad school for a Masters in Nonprofit Organizations. Some things I've noticed since I got here:

-Athens is like the most liberal city I've been to ever in The South.

-I have some sort of allergy here that seems to be alleviated by the local honey.

-There is a lot less neoconfederate BS here than I thought.

-I'm beginning to understand the importance of SEC football down here.

Overall, I'm really enjoying it here. Also, people are nicer here than back home in California.

P.S. for some reason, I just remembered about an essay I wrote for my APUSH class that is like potato level badhistory about how JFK invented the Southern Strategy and how Nixon/Agnew should be exonerated. If I can find a copy of it on my ancient laptop, I'll definitely post it (it's from 5 years ago though...)

Could The First Order exist as a group that actually admired The Empire? Could the work of The Empire be seen as unfulfilled? And could Vader be a martyr? Could there be a need to see through what didn’t get done?

Surely everyone admires the Empire? This was the only polity that could maintain peace in a galaxy that large. Despite a few unfortunate excesses, responsibility for which lies at the feet of Grand Moff Tarkin, Emperor Palpatine's New Order was the galaxy's only hope. Amongst its accomplishments were tremendous strides in artificial moon construction, respirator technology and clear the separation of Church and State.

Unfortunately all this was destroyed by a motley alliance of terrorists, bandits and secessionists. But the Empire shall rise again!

the girlfriend and I are heading to mackinac island for a five day R&R session - aside from the fort, village, and the main history meuseum, and other cool historical things we should check out?

[–]alynnidalarThere needs to be cooked is the rice. - /u/badhistory_ss 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Probably most of this will be useless if you've actually been to the island before, BUT Mackinac Island is one of my favorite places on earth, so I'm going to ramble anyway, as if you've never been there before:

Not historical, but you're going to bike around the island, of course? It's a requirement! My family actually always bikes through the middle of the island--go west out of town and turn inland at British Landing, but turn left at the first trail. If you keep going on the main trail it is impossibly steep and you will hate everything. If you turn at that first left though, it's a lot more gradual, there's only one hill that's really killer. Anyway, it makes for a nice ride through the woods and if you take the right trails, you end up at the top of Arch Rock, which is gorgeous. Watch for horse plop. :)

Word of warning--if you bring your own bikes, bring a bike lock. Bikes do get stolen. (although once, my sister's bike got stolen, and we found it later that afternoon just down the road... apparently somebody was too lazy to walk and just grabbed an unlocked bike!) Also keep in mind that while everybody might be on bikes or horses, it's still a road and you gotta follow the rules!

The Grand Hotel is pretty neat and the lunch buffet is IMMENSE, but I dunno if I'd spend $45 on it. (I got to go for free once on a school trip.) Cheapest place to eat is maybe Mighty Mac's? It's a burger place, I dunno if they're open for dinner. The only "regular" franchise place is a Starbucks, if they ever open a McDonald's I'll riot.

For fudge, I personally like Ryba's a lot (the pink stores), but the Murray Hotel has a morning discount so they're generally the cheapest. (I think it's to 10 AM, but you'd have to check before.) Everybody has samples. Once when my cousin and I were maybe twelveish, we went to almost every fudge shop on the island and got samples... yeah, may have regretted that later.

The Butterfly House is actually pretty cool, it's up behind the big Catholic church.

I love Mackinac Island so much, I'm a little sad I didn't get to go this summer. It's a really beautiful place and I always have fun even though I've been there a billion times before.

EDIT: forgot to add, I do have one historical thing that you MUST go to, because I think it's so neat--the Dr. Beaumont museum, right by the big park under the fort. A dude got shot in the stomach, the hole never fully healed, so the doctor did a bunch of experiments with sticking stuff through the hole to learn about how the digestive system works. Ah, the 1800s.

I don't know whether its the author or the translators, but my History of Geology is turning out to be a bit brave. Giordono Bruno was martyred for believing in multiple worlds, like I think he means only for multiple worlds. Also medieval Europe was a time when knowledge regressed precisely because of the Church's disdain for science.
