  • The IIHF ruled that the open rink-side gate was “irrelevant” and noted that Russian players and officials were aware of tournament rules “because of their vast experience.”

No kidding, these weren't a bunch of kids at their first international tournament. Where does the fine go however, just generally running the IIHF?

They should give the money to me

I agree, you deserve it.

Ah I had forgotten about this complete lack of class. Good on the IIHF for sticking it to them. Although who can blame them for wanting to get off the ice after being completely humiliated in the game.

It should probably be noted that not all Russian players skated off. IIRC, the Russian NHL players stayed.

Malkin stayed, I remember that.

/u/nickel_1988 made this comment when it happened. I saw photos of only 3-4 players staying, but this was what was seen on the stream:

I just watched the TSN version on hockeystreams. All Russian players stay for the awarding of the gold medals. Nine stay for the cup/confetti. No Russians remain by the time the anthem starts.

The nine players that stayed for the cup/confetti are:

14 Tikhanof

63 Dadonov

8 Ovechkin

11 Malkin

91 Tarasenko

94 Mironov

7 Kulikov (he's the one by the car trying to talk people into staying, not Ovi)

9 Panarin

71 Kovalchuk by the door

No Russians remain by the time the anthem starts.

This is really all that matters.

It's a shame the players that stayed initially didn't stick with their first instinct. And the whole situation in general of course.

Like it or not they are part of a team. I don't see them abandoning their team even if they disagree.

Or did the team abandon them?

Exactly. If my team decides to ditch the opposing team's anthem, fuck them. There is a difference between being a team and being a bunch of dicks.

Yeah, they're a part of a professional team that depends on Canadians.

Being part of a national team is a lot less of their time than playing in the NHL. I wouldn't be surprised if those guys took a lot of shit from European League pros for playing overseas and acting western. But because of their loyalty to the team, they put up with it.

But because of their loyalty to the team, they put up with it.

more like because they get paid significantly more money

they are part of multiple teams....

Their NHL teams they spend the rest of the year with. I don't know that i could do that to my buddies.

One team, under Putin.

lot of people mis-remembering this. no russians stayed for the anthem.

not the former ones, Kovalchuck was the one who started the exitus.

Alexander Ovechkin, Evgeni Malkin, Viktor Tikhonov and Dmitry Kulikov were among the few players who remained on the ice for the anthem.

Wheat from the chaff right there.

And really it takes too long for the losing team to wait on the ice, awards, photo's, trophies, national anthem. How long do you have to sit under the cameras as first loser? Yes they should have stayed, but at the same time they should play the anthem right away award the metals and let them gtfo.

Here's the source video of the Russian team leaving the ice https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLvX_VddB6M

I respect those players that chose to stay. You could tell they were confused but decided to stay even though the majority of their team left. That takes guts.

Totally agree, can't imagine the locker room after that.

maybe im too cynical but i figure the NHL guys are conscious of how their public image affects their own and the league's endorsement deals

I think this is totally the reason they stayed on. At the end of the day, I'd rather them stay on the ice because of this than leave.

I also wonder if it's because they've played with and know some of the guys on the Canadian team and are sticking around out of respect for former teammates.

Why is there a fucking car on the ice? I'd leave too, this arena is way too dangerous!

Glad for the fine. It's deserved. But Kovalchuk probably has that much lying under his couch cushions at any given time.

Did we embargo self respect too? Russians are just a mess these days. If you can't stay out of respect for the other team, stay so you don't look like callow savage.

The Russian hockey federation was fined. The IIHF doesn't have the authority to fine Russia.

It was implied that it was the Russian team, not the country.

Not to me, I assumed the IIHF fined each man, woman, and child in the Russian Federation $115,000.

As an American outsider to this situation, I was willing to give Russia the benefit of doubt and consider their mistake as a genuine one.... until I saw the 6-1 score.

The more fitting punishment would be to refuse to play the Russian anthem next time they win gold.

Nah, best not to do that.

The future Canadian teams should make a point of not leaving. Just stare at them hard.

The Canadians should learn the words to the Russian national anthem and then sing along.

Passive aggressive like a true Canadian!

I don't know if that's being passive aggressive, I think it's just called being the bigger man. Two wrongs don't make a right, if Canadians showed respect towards Russia despite what happened, it would actually humble them and maybe give them a chance to rethink their actions.

Stamkos: "Hey Sid, how long is this anthem, eh?"

Crosby: "It's about four minutes"

Toews: "It's 3:56, keep staring"

Do you even Canadian? Eh is used to turn a statement into a question, not to turn a question into a question.

Stamkos: "This is a long anthem, eh?"

Crosby: "I think it's about four minutes, eh?"

Toews: "It's three minutes, fifty six seconds."

Except when the question is rhetorical.

How would displaying similar unsportsman-like conduct help the Canadian team?

I think he is saying the IIHF should not play it at all, not that the Canadians should leave during it.

if they ever win gold

Fixed that.

Realistically Russia will win Gold at hockey some time in the next 25 years. Probably sooner than that. They are certainly one of the more dominant teams and have been for decades.

Its interesting actually to see the falloff of hockey after the collapse of the soviet union. Traditionally Russians have been more dominant in the sport, but recent years and their lack of success are actually attributed to the soviet collapse. Mostly due to the subsidizing of the sport and how expensive it is to get into.

Not as long as Canada's still playing.

[–]Gnaw 7

This is IIHF World Championship, not the Olympics. Russian team won in 2014, 2012, 2009, 2008 and is likely to win again in the near future.

Nah. Once you've chosen that option, you're committed. And what if it's so long from now that you're punishing a completely different set of people. If every player, coach, etc, that's there never did anything wrong, you're really just being mean.

The better punishment is to play it and stay on the ice. Snubbing them in the same way shows that they weren't being infantile. Playing their anthem and respecting their hockey would be more of a slap in the face than anything else imo.

[–]The_Peyote_CoyoteOntario [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Better yet, why don't we just never let them win gold in hockey ever again? So far, so good.

[–]MommaDerpBritish Columbia 28

Actually our Prime Minister has been a very vocal opponent of the crap in Crimea since the get go. When everyone else was still wringing their political hands about how they should respond, Stephen Harper wasn't taking no guff and drew the line. He was a pain in Putin's backside at all the G8 summits.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of Harper's campaign here at home, but I really respect him for being the guy that was shouting what everyone else was thinking.

Edit: Autocowrong

I have to agree with you on that. I'd rather eat broken glass than vote for Haprer but I do appreciate that he gave Putin shit right to his face.

$115K for Russia is peanuts at best. To make this payment they may just reduce a provinces budget/expenses to compensate or just reduce 1 military hardware purchase.

Comment from the /r/worldnews thread

AlphabetDeficient 53 points 3 hours ago

The whole thing's been blown out of proportion. As a Canadian, I think the confusion could be legit. If you watch the full video, they've just finished handing out medals to the Russians first, and then to the Canadians, which the Russians waited for. It's then obvious that they're about to do a cup presentation. In the NHL, once the players have shaken hands, and the cup is about to be presented, the losing team leaves the ice, they don't stick around and hang out for the celebrations, so I can easily see someone thinking it's time to go. If it was an intentional snub, they would have left before the Canadian medal presentation, as they got theirs first.

I think the organizers screwed up, personally, as they should have had the anthem immediately after the medal presentation, and then the cup presentation following. If they'd done that, I expect the Russians would have stayed for the anthem.
