This is from a news article awhile ago:

World’s Strongest Man Competition 2013 organized in Zhengzhou, Henan province. Host, Xiaoyan: Following a few competitors to Zhongmu County to experience the harvesting of watermelons where the competitors easily hauled up the watermelon baskets weighing up to 100 over catties (50kg), attracting a crowd of villagers at the field. At that moment, a middle aged female farmer came forth and picked up the baskets and walked off, saying “This is nothing, we do this all the time”. The competitors were stunned by the sight. There are talents in the normal civilians!"

It's like that scene at the beginning of Kung Fu Hustle.

Ohhh, so they are competitors. I initially thought those are just some farmers and I was looking at their arms thinking "Fuck this bullshit 5 day gym program and all this goddamn processed protein. Look at the gains on these peasants, I'm clearly doing something wrong, i should start cultivating watermelons and feed on them"

I love how that article had two units of weight and I didn't recognize either one.

You don't know how to convert Over Catties to pounds? It's just how many pounds of something you can throw over a bunch of cats! No wonder US schools are so bad.

You didn't recognize kilograms?

Yeah, the US school system is pretty lacking right now. Not knowing the conversion between different units is understandable, but not recognizing the metric system is pretty I don't even know how to put my disappointment/surprise into words.

Well I wouldn't use this guy being an idiot as a benchmark of the entire US school system. I have never met anyone that doesn't at least recognize the metric system in the US.

1kg = 2.2lbs.

So a quick estimate is to double.

Have you been to a school recently? I went to my sister-in-laws high school and I can honestly say that I was sadden by last of any history or basic math skills.

Not to mention they're all allowed to use cell phones/tablets during class.

But the biggest thing was the talent show, it was as if I went to strip joint instead... Pretty fucked up if you ask me.

I graduated in 99'

If you graduated in 99' it is quite likely that you learned less about basic math skills or history than many of those in a standard high school.

One trip or die trying

Looks as if the baskets hold around 7 watermelons. At an average of 20lbs each that's 140lbs for each arm. Holy shit that's impressive.

Counting the baskets that could be upwards of 300lb total. Grandma is a tank.

20 lb basket

My watermelon baskets are made out of solid steel also.

20lb baskets?

Do you even weave bro?

Don't forget about the air in the basket. Gramma pushin 400 lb ez

Deadlifts for days entire lives.

The article says 100 pounds, the world record is around 350 pounds so while impressive it isn't an impossible feat.

Edit: that's per arm by the way

I guess I was a little off. 100 pounds per arm though is still pretty amazing. I don't think I could even do that haha

[–]Westboro_Fag_Tits 3ポイント4ポイント  (3子コメント)

Are you a normal sized person in decent physical shape? If so, you could probably do it without a lot of difficulty.

Huh. Maybe I'm just overestimating what 100 pounds feels like? But yes I am an average guy in decent shape.

You can lift quite a lot of weight walking in a position like that.

Walking off with 50kg in each hand? Guess I am not in decent physical shape, I would crumble after a couple of meters.

I don't know why you got downvoted, 100 pounds per arm for an elderly woman is still very impressive.

They're called a farmer's walk. You'd be suprised at how much the average person can do.

You can see that the guy holding the baskets is standing up straight and using his muscles to support the weight. That's what he's been trained to do. He'll get tired pretty quickly.

The old woman is hunched and she's mostly letting the elastic resistance of her muscles and ligaments support the weight. Her only goal is to keep the baskets a few inches off the ground while she's walking. Anybody healthy can shrug a surprising amount of weight up and let it hang from their shoulder girdle while shuffling along. It's one of those things you aren't supposed to do.

Long-term, her spine will collapse - it has already started - and her joints will break down. Since she's spent a life working past the point of pain just to survive, she'll probably be surprisingly mobile despite the damage.

This is perfect /r/GetMotivated material. Whether that's a good thing depends on your value system.

That makes sense! Thanks for explaining.

Are their arms photoshopped? The proportions look all wrong.

They're power lifters and strongmen I believe, the image is from an article on farmers walks.

Farmers walks are an insane full body workout and she is certainly above what would be expected of a little old lady

That guy on the lefts forearms are as big as his biceps. He's got hot dog arms!

Nobody messes with Grandma.

Those are some seriously strong baskets.

No shit. Like carbon fiber baskets.

I think in terms of strength people who work in these professions are the strongest: 3'rd WORLD FARMERS> 1'st WORLD FARMERS > FISHERMEN > LUMBERJACKS

good thing I'm a lumberjack.

I was on a day trip to a lake outside of Shanghai one time and we took a boat ride, complete with skinny old lady paddling. The boat was about 15 feet long and had the paddling lady and two of us. She paddled with the paddle in one hand, with no bracing it against her body or using her other hand. She kept a comfortable pace and never looked tired or strained. I don't think she weighed 90 lbs. She must have been paddling for 60 minutes. It blew my mind.

I bet those guys wished their grand moms could do that!

I'd bet her legs and shoulder game is intense!

back in the late 70s i was a high-school student driving down a busy southern california blvd when i came upon a stalled chevy impala. the driver was getting out and pushing the car while he was trying to steer the beast into a parking lot. i parked and ran over to help him. he was a big mexican dude. his wife and about six kids were piled into the back of the car. although my assistance helped the maneuver, it was a pale effort compared to the wattage out-put this mighty manual laborer was putting forth. the man was insanely strong!

Holy fuck! Dem gainz brah!

[–]Sorry_that_im_an_ass -1ポイント0ポイント  (1子コメント)

All of them dudes are stacked. Does working in a melon field result in arms like that?

You'll also notice they are all western. They don't work on a melon field, they are all competitors from the 2013 World's Strongest Man competition.

That's farmer strong for you.

Fifty years of doing that for 12 hours a day.

Is.. Is this photoshopped? I carry 45lbs plates around my gym with my shoulders shrugged and its a bitch, this has to be well over 80lbs in each arm.

EDIT: since you goons are judging me without knowing any detail, I'll explain my trap workout.

I have 45lbs plate in each hand. 5 shrugs straight into holding shrug while walking 50 feet, 5 more shrugs, 50 feet while holding shrug 5 more shrugs, turn around 5 more shrugs, 50 feet back while holding shrug, 5 more shrugs 50 feet back to start 5 more shrugs, all while never putting the plates down. I do this for 4 sets.

If you do something non-stop your entire life, you eventually get good at it.

That's probably because you're weak

Wow your traps must suck man.
