I have a problem. I'm slowly falling in love with Austin. I had a couchsurfer over for the weekend, and he was more familiar with Austin than me, so he took me to some of his favourite places. I ended up on 6th St, watching a cowboy ride down the street on a perturbed looking horse. It was fun.

Also, I've entered the hell that is Ikea customer support. The holes for pegs on my bed are too small, so now there are bed bits strewn everywhere, but I have no way to actually take it back to the store, so I'm negotiating with Ikea to come get it and bring me a new one. It's not going well.

Hammer the pegs harder until they go in. The snug fit will keep the bed together better.

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 1

They don't go in. The holes are too small even for more hammering. Plus, when you start hammering, all the other pegs fall out because of the shockwaves.

Time to lube up your wood.

That just sound... wrong for some reasons.

Probably because you're not imagining using enough lube.

I feel like there's a dirty joke to be made here.

There's always a dirty joke if you pound at it hard enough.

Welcome to Austin, or as we say, Howdy!

Austin is quite a nice place although I generally don't enjoy sixth that much :D

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 1

I like the trees. And the cowboy. And the horse carriages with the lights and flowers on them.

Is Austin as handsome as he sounds?

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 0

Oh, fantastically so.

Well, he sounds like quite the charmer.

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 0

Ooo! Speaking of charmers, my downstairs neighbour called me "sweetie." He is no longer my friend.

I got into a very bizarre argument about John Philip Holland the other day. It was asserted that the Irish, as a people, are massively guilty of cultural appropriation. We appropriate a history of slavery from African-Americans to try and garner international sympathy, and most famous "Irish" people are actually English. Specifically, the claim was made that John Philip Holland was of Anglo-Dutch ancestry and Irish people wrongly tried to "claim" him. I and several others brought up the fact that his name was Seán Pilib Ó hUallacháin, and 'John Philip Holland' was the anglicized version, 'Holland' being the anglicisation of Ó hUallacháin in his area, while elsewhere on the island it was variably Nolan or Houlihan. They then claimed that he only adopted that name because he lived in Ireland, but he wasn't actually Irish. It was then brought up that he didn't speak English until he was 5 and grew up in an Irish speaking-family in a predominantly Irish speaking area with a mother named Máire Ní Scannláin.

The things people argue about.

It's true, did you know potatoes aren't even native to Ireland? Thieves, the lot of them.

Things that happened this weekend:

  • Went to a D Day reenactment

  • Saw my platoon sergeant charge a German mortar pit with a .38 in each hand

  • Learned the chorus to this song and this one which you shouldn't sing at work or around children.

  • Did my Grandpa Ferguson proud by drunkenly singing rowdy Scottish songs with a bunch of Canadians.

  • Hooked up with one of the Canadians (one of the women, to be clear) later that night in the tent of a friend who couldn't make the reenactment because of back surgery.

I clearly have a dirty mind, but I'm seeing you making sweet sweet love with a Canadian while your friend looks awkwardly, not being able to turn his head away because of his injured neck.

Sorry for imaging you this way. :(

[–]hussard_de_la_mort"sandwich in my right, .45 in my other hand" 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

What makes it even better is that the Canadian had fallen in with the group of WACs run by our unit commander's wife, who is also the older sister of the guy who owns the tent. I believe she sent him a gloating text message on my behalf about how I had gotten some in his tent before him, despite him owning it for like 3 years.

My history of furniture class has a drawing component where we have to draw examples of the furniture we are discussing and discuss the significance of these things. I spent an hour on my drawing last night and it left a lot to be desired. Im really hoping the professor doesn't put a lot weight in the drawings themselves as much as the information and work, because otherwise I'm screwed.

Who really discovered America? The answer may not surprise you!

I mentioned a couple days ago that I've wanted to do a BadHistory mega-post on Pre-columbian transoceanic interactions, discussing the good, bad, and occasionally ugly history of the topic. The History Channel's Who Really Discovered America? documentary (which, admittedly, dips into GoodHistory now and then when it debunks when a fringe theory doesn't live up to its rather lax standards) will likely serve as the foundation for the post, but I'll probably end up dealing with the topics in isolation rather than as part of the documentary, mainly because there are so many other fringe theories that get neglected. I find it suspicious that any Pre-columbian contact with Africa got omitted from the documentary; surely Abu Bakr II is worth mentioning if Saint Brendan or Hui Shen are. Also the documentary made little to no mention of contact theories going the other way.

To help fill in the gaps, if anyone has any Pre-columbian transoceanic contact narratives they'd like suggest, let me know.

A colleague of my dad's is investigating potential viking contact this summer. Her background is in archaeology and remote sensing, not strictly history. I'm interested in what she might end up finding.

Carthage in Virginia

Not sure I'm familiar with this one. I'm assuming its a more specific variant of Phoenicians in America; is there any specific 'evidence' for it?

[–]A_Crazy_CanadianEU4 is a Academic Source 1

It was in a really bad Tom Clancy Knock-off, I think. Any Phoenicians in America debunking is excellent.

Would you want to cover the claims that some Maya colonized Georgia? Or is that too far out of the scope of what you're covering?

Might be a bonus round.Richard Thornton deserves a BadHistory post one way or another.

I'm surprised that Assassin's Creed 3 didn't find a way to incorporate it into their Templar mythos.

I know I know, Cracked isn't the best site for the factually correct history, but in one of today's article, we have gotten this line:

Technology CAN make life better, but it has to fit into society first.

(They're talking about dishwashers, a less laborious way to clean dishes, but are just not widely adopted due to many reasons such as costs)

Which is a good principle to hold on for those who studied technological improvements of the past and wanted to avoid Whig-ism. New and better technology didn't mean anything if the community didn't choose to use it. That's why Incas don't use wheels, not because they're more stupid than those white men from over the sea, because the wheels are inconvenient tools to traverse the rocky, uneven surfaces of the Andean.

I've come up with a new exercise regime to get me ready for my PT test in October. Every morning I roll a D20, and I do as many pushups per hour as the dice says. Day one gave me 17 for the dice gods are dickholes.

Also, my cat snuck into the kitchen cabinets last night, stole the greenies bag and tried to open it up without me noticing. He's a nightmare.

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 1

My cat got into a cupboard and couldn't get back out, leading to frantic meowing and clawing at 2 AM. So it could be worse.

One solution would be to swap out the D20 for a D10. That way, you could do pushups AND not have to do loads.

Wedge did that once too, I think he's learned from that mistake.

I might need to do that. My abs hurt.

Finished reading 1000 years of annoying the french by Stephen Clarke, and it was a great read, but when I was going through the period of history that I know a lot about (12th century - 14th) I was just getting annoyed at how sensational it all was. Events were included not for significance but for a laugh, and were hardly fact-checked. Made me wonder how bad the other parts I didn't know a lot about were. Great book to read with a pinch of salt and for a laugh, but definitely just spreading misinformation.

Don't worry, my university dropped health insurance for grad students on the day it expired, didn't tell the rest of the faculty, then maybe kinda reinstated it for a bit.

To be more precise, they included a clause in the contraction contract making the contractors liable for the cost of the housing to an equal level. This includes food since the rooms will have kitchens and a discount on housing among other things that will cost the contractor around a million.

I love my school

The whole controversy surrounding the supposed Gospel of Jesus's Wife is really entertaining.

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 0

What do you think about it?

I haven't read any of the peer reviewed articles on the subject, so I can't really weigh in on the controversy. I think what's going to happen, though, is that there is going to be a lot of bruised egos and spilled ink over this tiny piece of paper.

It would be neat if Jesus had a spouse, but like, does it really matter if he did?

If history has taught us one thing, it is that the Battle of Agincourt was in 1415.

I've got nothing to say, really.
