OP, I am going to make more detailed TLDR for you, if you don't mind, since the nature of the craziness matters:

  • OP's agrees to help ex with finding a new place.
  • OP provides a check to cover 4 month's rent ($1850) as demanded by new landlord.
  • Turns out that "landlord" is also roommate, wants check to be made out to third party corporation. Other strange goings on surround the giving of the check.
  • Check is not meant to be cashed for a little while, and still has not been cashed.
  • Landlord LOCKS the ex in the apartment the first night she is there
  • Ex decides to move out. OP goes to help her, and landlord keeps her locked in demanding at least some money to let her leave.
  • Landlord starts throwing her stuff out the window. Police help with exit.
  • Landlord threatening to sue OP based on information on check. Also claims still unwashed check is lost, and wants money by transfer instead.
  • OP issues global cancellation on all checks for amount of original check, and also cancels original check.
  • Landlord has claimed she went to law school, and threatened to sue OP

Landlord LOCKS the ex in the apartment the first night she is there

Holy fuck that is so illegal. What there had been a fire?

I don't know enough to really give advice, but I will say it does jump out. And the landlord does it TWICE---and the second time she demands money to release her. Both are big lawsuits for the "lawyer" landlord to be risking.

I doubt she's a lawyer, any lawyer who would do something like that is begging to be disbarred. Batshit crazy.

I actually believe that she went to law school. I'm a medical professional and worked in psych for a while (I know I should have seen this coming, but I only had 2 brief interactions with her personally (<30 min each) ). I think she went to law school, then had her mental illness onset (it usually hits in the early 20s for women) and then never became an actual lawyer. That matches with the outline her stories followed (although she never mentioned having some sort of psychotic break lol)

That's unfortunate, but it's also unfortunate she became your problem. Good luck.

I would hope that she's lying, too. But you never know. No profession is immune from crazy.

That is exactly what both the police and the actual owner of the apartment complex said. At least I can take a bit of peace that the actual owner of the apartments said he would be starting the eviction process immediately for her. Because that is VERY not allowed in her lease.

Oh, I just bet. I can't imagine what it's like to be a property manager, and hear the police had to come because your tenant was locking people in your rental against their will. Holly balls.

Isn't that basically kidnapping? Or an equivalent with a name I forget, unlawful confinement or something? It's seriously illegal, I remember that much.

I don't mind at all, thank you, Im at work today and posted this to PF and here and was finding myself short on time writing up the TLDR.

The landlord locked the door all night, not OP.

oh, sorry, my mistake. will fix.

[–]ChiliFlake 8ポイント9ポイント  (3子コメント)

OP, put a stop on that check. Deal with the fallout when she takes you to court, I'm sure the judge would love to hear about locking someone in an apartment.

nvm, saw you did that. She sounds like a lunatic.

I've heard of being crazy.. But this is even crazier than crazy standards. Reminds me of the cat lady off of the Simpsons whom throws cats out the door whilst pulling her hair.

I'm shocked the popo didn't admit her to a psych ward. A judge would find this menacingly and entertaining. You did right, canceling the check and don't even worry about any suites this woman brings. She's lucky your ex gf didnt press the issue as far as false imprisonment and kidnapping goes. Cray lady is crazy

I almost encouraged her to press charges. But shes a student and schools starting back up in a week. I couldn't ask her to take on the stress of that while now scrambling to find a place. I personally would have liked to see the cops kick the door in and arrest her... but that's me.

Reminds me of the cat lady off of the Simpsons whom throws cats out the door whilst pulling her hair.

And that reminds me of the James Thurber story The Night the Bed Fell:

"so that presently she would arise, tiptoe to the door, open it slightly and heave a shoe down the hall in one direction and its mate down the hall in the other direction. Some nights she threw them all, some nights only a couple of pairs."

I'd mention the illegal imprisonment as grounds for a lawsuit....

[–]littlesushibox 7ポイント8ポイント  (0子コメント)

Pretty nice for taking care of your ex like that. Also, if the landlord broke any stuff of your ex's then maybe look into legal action on that.

[–]ThisIsMyFatLogicAlt 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

Is your ex seeking a restraining order against this woman? In her shoes I would be afraid she'd retaliate against me for leaving, and I would think any judge would grant it in this case.

You didn't say what the landlord was threatening to sue you over, as I'm guessing no specifics were given and it was just an angry outburst by a lunatic. With the information you've given it sounds like there is nothing you could possibly be sued for. If anything I'd be weary of this person knowing where you live, but from a legal perspective it doesn't sound like you've got anything to worry about.
