What a nightmare. Can you imagine just driving down the highway minding your own business and suddenly there's a jet on top of you?

Imagine your initial response. Dude the taxi doesn't have the same field of view as the guy behind him. If anything all the driver of the taxi saw was a giant piece of metal come out of nowhere.

I think you'd be okay if your car is made of steel.

The unfortunate thing is, the part of the A27 where it crashed is where there are traffic lights, so they would have just been sitting there. And on a hot day like today, it would have been full of people heading to the beach. I really hope I don't know anyone there, I am a local in the area.

I was on that road about 30 mins before it happened, traffic was pretty awful already and it's roasting. My gf wanted me to wait for her (we were going to my g-parents for lunch) but i was late already and asked her to take a train separately. She literally arrived when the crash happened and we'd have been on that road had I waited :s

It's also where all pedestrians and cyclists have to cross. It's also where a bunch of marshals stand and direct traffic to the air show.

Easily one of the worst places for that plane to crash.

Here's another angle that shows they were sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvHplYmh2f8

Here in Houston there was an 18 wheeler that flew off the side of a flyover bridge and landed on top of some cars below. Can you imagine just driving along and seeing an 18 wheeler raining down on you from a hundred feet above?

honestly I don't think my mind would process this. Like "that plane looks like a big rig... huh..."

Horrifying! I count at least 4 people in the path of that fireball as well! Godspeed people of Shoreham and the rest of England. So sad.

Something literally just fell out of the fucking sky and ended their lives. That's crazy.

Holy fucking shit. That is truly horrifying how the fireball cascades across the road like that.

Does anyone know the type of aircraft that was? I'm guessing a Hawker Hunter (or similar), but can't quite tell.

Article from the Guardian. It sounds like the pilot didn't eject, but was pulled from the wreckage alive. Reporting several people injured, with unknown conditions. No deaths reported yet. The plane collided with cars on the A27 as it came down.

Pulled out alive from that gigantic fireball? Holy fuck.

The fireball is in the back. Im more concerned as to how he survived the canopy careening down the way with him in it.

From this video, the plane kind of "landed" on its belly it looks like so definitely possible the pilot survived if he was shielded from flames in the cockpit? Still seems unlikely

It looks like he went into the stopped traffic from behind and at an angle. Many of those people probably died instantly. If I have to go out in a tragedy like this, instantly is about the best option.

Survived the crash does not mean he will survive the injuries from the crash long term.
It only means that he was alive immediately following the crash.

My wife is there at the moment. 9 deaths confirmed. Pilot died on his way to the hospital.

Where does it say he was pulled out alive?

It doesn't, though might have been edited as I also remember reading he was pulled out. From this pic it looks like the canopy was open as the plane was cartwheeling along the ground. Seems very unlikely the pilot could survive.

Reading the Twitter replies got me curious about all those reporters asking to use that picture. What's a smart way to handle that? Give permission to everyone who asks, so the news can spread more effectively? Should you be careful as to who you give permission to? Can you or should you try to make a deal to get compensated? What if someone uses the picture for their news/blog/whatever without your permission?

I live in Shoreham. It's gone from being a very lively, beautiful day to a pretty sad and quiet one. Also hearing that 7 people have been killed, which is awful. Strange seeing Shoreham on reddit.

I also live in shoreham. My family and I drove up the fly over to head towards Brighton literally about 5 minutes after the accident. I stuck my head out the window to look down the road and it was just a huge wall of black smoke and I couldn't even see the wreckage itself. Everyone who was heading in that direction down the A27 had gotten out of their cars and was just watching.

Every new photograph or bit of footage I've seen just seems worse than the last, it's brutal. Scary stuff.

Please, for your own life and your future well being, do not EVER approach an airplane crash from downwind without a proper respirator.

The composite materials that make up a great bit of a lot of airframes are very dangerous. The epoxy binder is very bad on its own when it burns, but the fibrous material of the composite itself can easily be wafted up into the air by the heat & carried along with the smoke.

These fibers can end up in your lungs. Imagine thousands of tiny bits of glass/carbon fibers becoming permanently stuck in the inner linings of your lungs. This leads to inflammation of the lung tissues, causing you to slowly suffocate. In instances when it is not fatal, it leads to permanent scarring of the lung walls and BAM you were a nice healthy 19 year old, now you are a 19 year old with chronic pulmonary fibrosis and possible lung cancer.

The video is not worth it.. Don't get too close, please.

You can refer to this paper from the FAA

Here is a little exceprt from Mayo Clinic about Pulmonary fibrosis: Pulmonary fibrosis occurs when lung tissue becomes damaged and scarred. This thickened, stiff tissue makes it more difficult for your lungs to work properly. As pulmonary fibrosis worsens, you become progressively more short of breath.

Imgine knowing that the next breath you take, no matter how hard you try, will always be a little shorter than the one you just took. fucking scary man.

Very unlucky to land right on the road with open ground either side.

As he didn't eject I assume he was trying to avoid striking anyone until the last second.

Given the aircraft was originally equipped with either a Martin-Baker 2H or 3H seat, I guarantee he wasn't in the envelope to make a safe ejection anyway. By the time it became apparent he was going to hit the ground, it was already too late to eject.

That is sad :(

[–]poorly_timed_leg0las 58ポイント59ポイント  (14子コメント)

Atleast he was brave enough to stick it out fuck I'd have been floating down smoothly watching the fucking fireworks. Just imagine being on that road terrifying

I wonder if the deaths would have been avoided if he would have chickened out and ejected?

He also could have blacked out in the loop. The angle in the video above showed no movement of the aircraft until the last second, where it quickly rolled a bit to the left (seemingly putting it ON to the road, but it's hard to tell).

I don't think so. The G's wouldn't have come until well after he was already screwed. That wing dip looks to me like a stall. That happens when you put the stick in your lap. I assume that was his last-ditch attempt to save things. What went wrong here is that he started with a barrell roll, and turned it into a loop on the back side, not realizing he didn't have the altitude to complete the manuever until he was past bulls-eye nose low.

Yeah, I'd agree that the wing dip did look like a stall. I never like thinking or saying it's pilot error, but in this case it seems likely he went in too low and was unaware of the space available.

It's amazing how fast people download and re-upload videos of incidents like this. Within moments on Youtube there were pages and pages of shitty spammy videos all copied from each other.

This is the sort of thing youtube needs to turn it's algorithms against. Not instantly searching for copyrighted songs or tv broadcasts. While those things are indeed important, this sort of copy/reupload-spam destroys the quality of youtube and robs the original uploader.

Literally <2 miles from me. Heard the planes earlier and then a bunch of sirens but didn't put two and two together. Mad.

Drive that road every day. 7

Aftermath video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cw_mB2N6Eg

Edit2:

From what I can tell it's crashed in pretty much the most unfortunate place in the area.. They're the only traffic lights a mile either way, so that's where all the pedestrians and cyclists generally cross if they need to get over the road. And during air shows they throttle the traffic with cones and such, so traffic will have been moving slower even if there wasn't a red light at the time. Oh, and because there's an airshow and it's a nice day there'll be an abnormally high amount of pedestrians and cyclists in the area.

Literally tons of fields either side that he could have crashed into.

Edit3:

Oh this pic is potentially awful.. It's a Daimler limo, which are almost exclusively wedding cars here in the UK. On a saturday afternoon at 1pm.. Ugh.

From the aftermath video:

"He's gotta be squashed"

That's one way to put it. What a sad story really.

Camera man is in shock.

Yeah I think you're right. The misplaced laughter is usually a dead give away. I've met plenty of people who'd been laughing their ass off after sustaining quite the injuries or having been through a traumatic experience such as a carcrash or a fall.

Personally I was laughing after I got hit by a car and broke my leg. That was until the adrenaline wore off though. But normal reaction to shock is apathy or forced humour I guess.

After I got stabbed I was joking and laughing with everyone, police, paramedics, doctors nurses. They all thought I was drunk. As soon as I stopped talking I started crying so I went right back to joking and laughing. At one point they were talking about my wound being "2 cm long and 1 cm deep" and I blurted out "That's what she said!" Got all the doctors laughing and a nurse slapped me on the arm haha.

It seems like he had respect enough not to try and get footage of the corpse in the crushed car. It was like he was going to get closer then pointed the camera down.

Edit: as others have pointed out, the guy had to be told not to film the wreckage

I think he does it after hearing the guy in the background say "turn the camera off mate"

I think someone told him to stop filming. Don't think he was totally aware of what he was doing, and needed somebody that wasn't in as much shock to give him that nudge. Can't blame any of them.

Honestly I'm more curious as to how the accident actually occurred. If this was an Air Show then the pilot was a trained professional, which makes me wonder what went wrong before the crash.

Anyone have a guess?

My guess is that he entered the maneuver too low, and thus finished too low. Like this http://youtu.be/alo_XWCqNUQ Wrong local altimeter setting I believe was the root cause.

Very descriptive title...

Yea it's a a little messed up to get baited into watching a video of a tragic accident with an unknown but possibly high death count. Bad title. That said I hope that it was at least attributable to a malfunction and not just a pilot being too reckless, though that won't bring any lives back.

Can we not do titles like this? It's not as bad as what buzzfeed does but it's still pretty obnoxious. Reddit has shown us all that there's a better way to consume news, lets keep the good thing going.

Agreed except for the implication that reddit is somehow above any of this shit.

What on earth? Reddit had shown us no such thing. This place has always been a hive of sensationalism and clickbait dude

And in that moment, those two British blokes leaning out of the roof windows are bonded together forever.

The next time they both leave their houses at the same time, one will say to the other, "That was crazy, huh?", to which he'll reply, "yeah! So sad." After a few seconds pause, they'll get on with what they were doing.

The following time, they'll smile and nod.

The third time, it will be as if nothing happened.

Source: am British.

Yeah!

You crazy, man? The guy simply said "oh dear" when the bloody plane crashed, no way they'll say "yeah!".

UPDATE: 7 people confirmed dead at the scene, unknown if the pilot is one of them.

BBC story: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-34027260

"Oh, dear" & "Oh my word.." were so much more enjoyable to listen to than "HOLY FUCK" "WORLDSTARRRRR"

Definitely the most calm response i've heard in a video. If it were to be in america you would hear nothing but "Oh my god" "Oh my god" "WTF!"

I wonder why this is? I'm not saying either response is wrong, but it's true that if this was an American video, everyone in it would be screaming and freaking out. It's British though, so you just get "Oh dear", a puzzled look from the bloke next door, then awkward silence. I just find the extremes in response curious from a cultural standpoint, I suppose.

If that really is a wedding car, I'm not sure it's possible to have worse luck. Fields everywhere yet he not only manages to hit the only traffic lights for miles, but also a wedding party. All this happens on the south coast on one of the hottest days of the year. Poor man, I feel so very sorry for him and anyone else who is affected by this. It's frightening just how quickly a normal day can turn into a tragedy. :(

not to mention appropriate

Really? People died and you chose to go with 'so this just happened'?

Am currently stuck at the airfield this happened at. As it hit the cross roads for the main exit Road we are all stuck for the foreseeable future. Latest word is 15 injured, 1 critical and 7 dead. Is an absolute tragedy and there was just absolute silence when it happened.

[–]witness_protection 5ポイント6ポイント  (0子コメント)

i hate this title. makes it seem like something light and funny just happened.

I can't quite understand how this still happens on this day and age. I went as a kid to an air show called "Tiger Meet 1996". On that day an F-16 crashed with an A7 I think. A pilot friend of mine said it was frequent because it's when they pull the most risky maneuvers and that's why planes would not fly over people anymore at air shows. They fly over empty areas.

Yet on this one it appears like there's not much of an empty area for planes to fly over. Why would they risk this?

That's the shitty part, there is a lot of empty area. There are other videos in the thread that show it from a different angle but there's miles of grassland on both sides and the plane managed to hit the one road in the middle of it all.

Not to be rude to anyone, but this seems to be a video of a terrible accident; so why are almost all of the top comments making jokes or puns? Is it for karma? Because it's a little disheartening to assume people don't take serious happenings seriously.

I'm watching this like "please don't blow up, please don't blow up, please don't blow up, please don't blow up, oh dear..."

I work in TV, and I'm pretty desensitized to almost everything I see and hear about except for plane crashes, they always get me. My grandfather (J.W. Bill Fornof) passed away while performing in an airshow when my father was only 15 years old, and because of this I never had a chance to know him, and at the time really created a rift in my family. Before he performed he was a pilot in the Navy at the end of WWII and in Korea and was regarded as one of the best pilots alive in his time. I've heard so much about him, and really wish I ever had a chance to meet him. My Dad and both of my uncles followed my grandfathers lead (My uncle Corkey Fornof went into performing stunts and did movies, My other Uncle Terry Fornof is a Brig General in the Airforce right now, and my dad Thomas was a Lt. Commander in the Navy as a pilot), so I had pilots all around me in my family.

If the fact that my own grandfather passed away at an airshow, in 1996 (I was only 12 years old) me and my older brother went to an airshow in Lafayette Louisiana and I saw Pilot Joe Hartung crash and pass away, since then, I refuse to go to another airshow. My prayers are definitely with those families of the men in that accident.

"So this just happened" is a fucking horrible click-bait title even if it wasn't a video of several people dying in a horrible accident, but since it is you're not only a cunt for using a title that gives little to no information whatsoever about the video, but also because you're making light of a tragedy by using a shitty, tired phrase. Basically, go fuck yourself.

people react to crazy shit in different ways - it was probably just the first thing that came to his mind. choosing a title hastily doesn't mean he doesnt respect the situation or the people involved.

After a quick google I found this about it.

"Several people have been injured after a plane taking part in the Shoreham air show in Brighton crashed on to a nearby road.

A Sussex police spokesman said the aircraft hit several cars on the A27 just north of Brighton city airport, where the Royal Air Forces Association air show was being held.

“The aircraft ended up in a bush. There have been several casualties but we have no further information on these at the moment,” the spokesman said.

The A27 has been closed in both directions and drivers have been told to avoid the area. The interchange at Lancing is also closed.

The plane involved – a Hawker Hunter single-seat fighter jet – was attempting a loop manoeuvre but failed to pull out. One eyewitness said the pilot did not eject before the plane hit the ground."

Thank you England for not going into a "OH MY GAWD, OH MY GAWD, OH MY GAWD" frenzy.

Such a British response. "Oh dear. Oh dear. Oh my word."
