Watching it POV and not having any sense of the difficulty, don't you feel like you could do it, even though you almost definitely couldn't?

I KNOW that I would mess up the rotation of the scooter and land on it, impaling myself

I feel like I would hit myself in the dick at least 4 times before landing on the ground in a heap.

Once as a child I had one of those bikes that had pedals that would move with the wheels. Was riding down sidewalk, saw roots pushing up part of sidewalk. Try using it as ramp, let feet off the pedal like the motocross people do. Lose my feet and my ass falls backwards on the wheel while I'm still holding the bars. Get punched in the stomach (repeatedly) by the seat as the wheel keeps pushing me forward, balls getting rekd by the tire, eventually fall over. Start crying, everyone watching, lose respect of siblings

But you gave zero fucks.

It's called fixed gear

First the base would smack you in the face. THEN you would land on it.

Or worse, it smacks your ankle.

So many ankle bruises just to pull off that damn tail whip.

First it goes right to your thighs.. THEN you blow up!

I can't even move a scooter on foot without shattering both my shins.

Vast majority of people would just power wobble and smash into the bottom of the take off ramp before even getting into the air.

I wouldn't make it to the jump.

man, you would be screaming and moving all your limbs like crazy as soon as you leave the ground.

Have you seen the nitro circus jump? It's designed in a way where you hit the landing at a super shallow angle. Even if you biff, it's hard to get hurt.

Sure, go for it! I'll hold your beer.

I broke my leg riding one of these through the kitchen. No thanks, man.

I wouldn't make it to the bottom of the launch ramp without falling and getting a crippling long term injury.

Not if you've ever tried to ride a scooter down a ramp. I guarantee you'd eat shit before you even made it to the jump.

That's exactly his point.

[–]Ketrel 0

Just like porn, when I watch it POV, I feel like I actually DID do it.

I know I would get scared going down the ramp and slide sideways to stop myself.

what do you mean I "could" do it? I've just done it, I've seen it with my own eyes.

i dunno the whole time i was thinking i was gonna watch an ankle snap

My ankles would be in pain from the travel getting up the ramp

Nope. I can feel the hang time and I know I wouldn't know what to do in that little window.

The trick itself is in slow motion, so that makes it look easier.

I don't think it is in slow motion, the scooter is just rotating that slowly.

It doesn't take 6 seconds to fly across the gap of a mega ramp. It is definitely slow motion. It should take around 3 seconds, meaning that this is at half speed.

I don't have the source video, but you can just look up any other mega ramp video if you want.

What gif are you watching, because it does take almost exactly three seconds from take off to landing in this gif. Nowhere near 6.

This is at Nitro Circus. I once saw them live, the entire show is 3 hours of nonononoyes.

[–]dont_mind_the_matter 91ポイント92ポイント  (6子コメント)

I just... I really, really like watching full-sized adults in child size cars doing flips apparently.

Some of those guys could probably backflip my grandma down a ramp, given enough lube.

Yeah okay, but he's still riding a scooter.

This is also Nitro Circus though, so this is only 1% of the crazy shit they do

And fairly tame at that

This is way more terrifying than jumping on bike. No shocks, no suspension, 5 inch rubber wheels, absolutely no room for forwards or backwards overbalance, and if the handle bars are rotated even the smallest degree left or right you'll eat shit. That shit is more impressive than a bike jump IMO.

I ride a skateboard though is the thing. We don't get handlebars.

But you get four wheels.

all in near perfect alignment with each other.

I would consider a jump this big about as terrifying on a skateboard. But that's coming from a non-skater.

People who don't skate underestimate how hard it is to ride a skateboard. People literally can't even push (or even stand) on one without nearly falling over for the first hour or two. On the other hand, even the least coordinated 7 year old can just hop on a scooter and go.

And when going high speed, your board goes squirrely (AKA speed wobbles) if you don't have good balance and control, and then you eat shit. Unless your trucks are obscenely tight, but that's a trade-off which removes your ability to turn at all.

I boarded throughout most of my teens in the '90s, and have used scooters (not nearly as much). On this kind of jump, I'd take the board every single time.

Yeah you can lose the board, but with the look of that ramp, if you angled it right you could literally just slide down on your butt. The scooter with the reliance on the handlebar for turning is a faceplant into no teeth waiting to happen.

At high speeds, like in the gif, the front wheel wobbles just like a skateboard starts to wobble. The problem with that though is because the front wheel is connected directly to the handle bars. Therefore, the handle bars wobble from side to side and as a user above said, even the slightest angle the handle bars are turned and you're definitely eating shit. You're right, anyone can pick a scooter up and ride, no problem but with ramps like this only the most skilled can do this. I'm not saying anyone could pick a board up and do it either, but I would definitely take the board over scooter any day. It's got four wheels that are almost perfectly aligned. A scooter has two wheels with one of the directly connected to the handle bars. On a ramp like this it takes a much more skilled person than a board would need.

Waaaaaay more terrifying on a skateboard. Imagine your board flying out in front of you like that, but you don't have any handlebars to grab it back to you like in this gif. If the board slips out even a little, you're dead man.

Waaaaay harder.

That's why you always early grab or christ air mega ramps

[–]The_Price_Is_Right_B 37ポイント38ポイント  (11子コメント)

you're a dead man

No. You aren't. People fall on mega ramps more often than not.

this guy even got back up.

Man i remember seeing that live. All i could think was oh my god that guy just died.

Same here, except I was like 8 so my reaction was mostly making fun of him for fucking up, not comprehending he was pretty badly injured

I mean it hit the ground so hard both of his shoes flew off at an angle snd speed that looked impossible. That was pretty damn funny.

Right? And the guy after saying "..wow I can't believe he made the 720"

I thought that was going to be the second time I'd seen someone die on TV.

I think I'll kick my shoes off here and have a nap.

"Wow. I can't believe he landed that 720."

Unless you land on the flat. Then you get some serious injuries, depending on how you fall. Head first= game over

I didn't mean you'd literally die. People safely bail all the time on megas. It's just a saying. Like if you mess up a fucking kick flip and fall you can be like "man, I totally just died" I'm not being literal.

I coulda sworn I read he broke his ankle/legs? Was that someone else?

BMX bikes don't have suspension of any kind.

Your under estimating tire compression

Depends how you have your tires really 110psi often does give my wrist a run for their money

Why would you have bmx tires that high?

Its the max pressure mine can have and i just favour it for hopping and for speed really

Fair, but still no suspension. Besides the black mat he's landing on is meant to make the landing softer.

Yeah what about a skateboard... which this ramp was designed for... with no shocks, no suspension, 3 inch rubber wheels, and no room for overbalance.....

I'd consider a skateboard about the same on the holy shit meter.

Um most skateboard wheels are no bigger than 54 mm.

Edit: they are also more of a urethane not rubber. (I'm so getting downvoted)

If you're going on a ramp this big, you'll have huge wheels. Something like 57-60mm. Hell, I ride 56mm Spitfires for tranny.

Well I am wrong but I'm glad to see there is another skater here.

Not to mention that handlebar is going right into your sternum or chin when you do fuck up.

This guys never been popsicled by a skateboard if he thinks that a bike and scooter are the only things threatening your sternum and chin... and nuts

I'm just saying I've never seen a scooter failure that couldn't have the words, "BOOM! HEADSHOT!" superimposed over the clip.

Shit imagine the credit card possible.

He still looks like nerd

Yeah okay, but he's still riding a scooter

Bmx bikes have no shocks. This is not more impressive. Scooters are insanely easy to bail on and you have more control vs a bike or skateboard. NO ONE should ride a scooter seriously once puberty happens. That's a scientific fact.

[–]Zombiz 0

Those bmx bikes don't have shocks or suspensions...

if the handle bars are rotated even the smallest degree left or right you'll eat shit

That was all I was thinking about watching this gif.

ITT: skhaters gonna skhate

Get off my halfpipe!

Back in my day (I'm old, haven't ridden in 20+ years), we didn't care what kind of gear people rode on. Bikes, boards, whatever. We were all out there to unwind, escape and have fun. My son both skates and scooters, but he's been skating more to avoid confrontations at the local park. I've said it before, but I can't understand the animosity within the skating community.

Anyone want to give me a good rundown as to why this fracture exists, aside from the worn arguement that scooters are lame?

For me personally it's because 95% of scooterers I've come across in the UK are chopsy little wankers. They're usually between the ages of 9 and 14, don't understand the rules of a park (let other people use the ramps, don't get in people's way, etc etc) and will threaten to shank you if you say anything to them. They ruined the vibe at the public skateparks in my area. I have no problem with someone riding a scooter, the problem we have is the behaviour of the people that do. That is what it's like where I am anyway, I'm sure american skatepark culture is a lot different to here, understand I realise that not all places are like here.

I get that- give those already in motion the right-of-way. But my whole issue is that this doesn't seem to be the real problem here. In my experience (this is only based on my experience of course), scooter riders get shit on before they even hit a ramp. I've watched from a distance as my son interacts with other riders. He is always respectful, and gives other riders their space. He's overly-respectful, if that's possible. To the point of sitting back and spending most of his time watching so as to not get in the way. Nine out of ten times, the other riders won't even give him the time of day when he's on a scooter, and he's rarely given the opportunity to prove himself. When he's on a skateboard however, he's welcomed to the groups without question nearly every time.

However, there are cases where skaters don't give a shit about what other people are riding, and include him in their groups regardless of his rig. Mostly it's the older riders who are more welcoming. I guess I'm being all fuddy duddy wishing all of these kids could just get along and appreciate the skill and talent regardless of their flavor. The skating community already has enough stacked against them, especially in towns where skate parks don't exist. Why they feel the need to further alienate members of their sport is beyond me.

And yeah, I'm a believer in skating and scootering being different classes within the same sport.

(Edit: Wow, that got wordier than even I expected. Typed on mobile, so I'm not backing out now.)

Yeah man, I think age is the key factor. You're right in that older riders are more welcoming, and whether you're a skater, bmxer or scooterer, young teens can be real dickheads (I know I was). I happen to be in an area where almost all skaters are 15 or older, and chilled out, and almost all scooterers are 15 and under, and chopsy. I think that goes for most places in the Uk, and that's where I think the anti scooter thing comes from. Tell your kid not to get disheartened, I wish I'd kept to anything for long enough to get good at it.

Hell yeah, man. I appreciate the words of encouragement. He just turned 15, been scooting for over 6 years and skating seriously for maybe one. He's a hundred times better than I ever was.

In fact, as part of his bday present, I set him up with a website so he can start promoting himself. Right now it just redirects to his Instagram (which is private or else I'd shamelessly plug it here), but the plan is to open up a YouTube channel and embed videos right into the site. He's super stoked abt it. He's a different kid when he's in the skate world.

That's dope as hell, wish I had parents who encouraged me like that. Making youtube vids for that sort of shit is great too, I have a mate that still does it and it's one of those things you can sink hours into, like a video game, but still be productive and learn new skills. Happy for you and your kid bro.

TIL skateparks are as rough as a supermax prison.

Scooterers are generally younger, and with that they aren't as courtious at skateparks. They also see it as easier, anyone can stand on a scooter, and learn to bunny hop within 10 minutes. Learning to ollie a skateboard is kinda a barrier to new skaters. But i'm a decent skater and if i tried to do this on a scooter i'd probably die.

At least his attitude isn't as terrible as a bmxer. Man most guys I know on a bmx are just scumbags. I think they speak for all of them, and ESPECIALLY skaters. Every skater I meet is a dickhead. And they think having no handlebars is something special haha.

Heyyyyy, question from a non native English speaker.

If that is called a scooter what is this called?

http://www.motorino.it/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/22/10358.jpg

People have been looking at me weird...

The rider in the gif is most likely Ryan Williams. He currently rides for Nitro Circus on their extreme sport tour. He's a pro scooter- and bmx rider and he's pretty much good at any other extreme sport. I'd recommend checking out some of the things he's done for he is pretty much the craziest when it comes to doing big tricks.

EDIT - He's a professional scooter- and bmx rider. Not a professional scooter and bmx rider. Damn reddit being a know-it-all.

That's a great profession name..

May sound silly, but he's making a lot of money just from his hobby.

Check him and Dakota Schuetz.

It's Ryan Williams.

For all the people talking shit because he's on a scooter, he's sick at BMXing too . Don't be dicks and let people do what they enjoy.

TBH a scooter looks harder to land than a bike or skateboard, tricks might be easier but damn landing on those tiny wheels

I find the whole idea of, for example, skateboards being 'harder' than scooters really weird. It's like saying rugby is harder than football, or hurdles is harder than javelin.

If you just mean doing a jump over a ramp, BMX is probably easiest and skateboard hardest, but that's why BMXers generally do bigger airs and gaps and things.

I get that a skatebaord is just on your feet with no handle etc, but I'm just thinking about the tiny diameter of scooters wheels and how hard it would be to land properly.

The thing with skateboards is that the board can fly out from under you if you are slightly off balance when you land, whereas handlebars on scooters basically means that's not an issue. You can also get some pretty decent grippy wheels too.

Pretty sure this is footage from a Nitro Circus run by Ryan Williams (RWilly). I know that's his signature scooter model so I'm assuming that's him. He blows my mind because he can do pretty much any extreme sport incredibly.

Oh I'm aware of that. I've also raced BMX and I've been unicycling for years. If there's one thing you learn from unicycling its exactly how much tire pressure matters and affects your ride. Like if you rode BMX on dirt, high tire pressure would make for a bumpier ride & you would lose traction as well. All I'm saying is the tire shock absorption will at least make up the additional weight of the bike

So bring on the downvotes ;)

I wish subreddits would stop putting "porn" in the name.

"Oh look, a beautiful landscape I could use as a desktop wallpaper!" ...(EarthPorn)... "Um, nevermind, I probably shouldn't click on that at work."

Try /r/nosillysuffix, it aggregates all the SFW Porn subs and shows them without the word "porn"
