I just posted the following in the bgg page of the Fury of Dracula third edition.
https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1422029/third-edition-b...
I'm posting it here as well as it has to do with the second edition, so... here it goes:
...
I have a copy of the second edition in english (I didn't overpay for it, whatever the heck that means. But I bought it for 50 bucks years ago). I'll have an excuse to buy the new edition if they release it in portuguese as well.
That being said, it was a dick move by FFG.
I can just imagine how people that bought the second edition for 100+ dollars just some month or two ago feel. FFG could have prevented all this by simply telling everyone they were working on a new edition.
EDIT: If you feel this seems out of context, you can find the original post on page 1 of the following thread: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1414952/new-cover-art
...
Then I had this idea: there should be a thread for people that are hating the idea of a new edition, either because they've paid a lot for the second edition, or because they feel that suddenly their game is obsolete.
So there you go. Feel free to hate the new edition in this thread!
EDIT: I know there are a lot of people here that are loving the idea of a third edition. I was really trying to encourage people that don't to talk about it free of reproach.
EDIT 2: I'm finding it hillarious that some are calling me a dumb troll, while the following thread gets all kinds of love:

So just how far ahead of time should a game company announce that they are going to make a new edition or do a reprint? If they made the announcement 2 months ago, then people who bought a copy for big bucks 3 months ago would be unhappy. If the announce was 5 months ago, then people who bought ..., well you get the picture.
I've been looking to get a couple for about 2 years now, so I'm delighted that there's going to be a new edition.

It sounds to me like the 3rd edition is going to be different enough from the 2nd that it may not matter. Personally, I like the 2nd edition, and will probably be sticking with that for the most part. Doesn't mean I won't consider picking up the 3rd, but it's the same with me for Runebound (sticking with 2nd), Warhammer Quest, etc. I just tend to stick with the known value that I like.

I agree. Companies should never re-release products. Games should get old, become rare, and be sold at exorbitant prices to gamers.
Fantasy flight games re releases too many games! A new editions of Descent and talisman? Stupid. Redoing Tigris and Euprhates and Twilight Imperium? Who even wants that?
Look at the best boardgame company, Games Workshop. They let all their best board games die. Warhammer quest? No one wants that game so they let it fall into obscurity. Heck, when they slipped up and accidentally re-released Space Hulk they had the decency to do a limited run. That way the game got really expensive and gamers were forced to go without.
Have a game people want and don't cater to it, That's smart business.

I'm not talking about re-releases in general. As I already said:
FFG could have prevented all this by simply telling everyone they were working on a new edition.

Well, I believe as soon as they get to the decision to develop a new edition? I mean, they've been working on this one for months, probably more than a year.
I don't know. I'd be mad if I had payed 100+ bucks for the second edition and suddenly found out they were already working on a new edition.
Glad it's just me then

When they first came up with the idea?
Should they just start announcing every game design idea they come up with, reprint or no, even in the early stages? What if the design fizzles out? What if the release process ends up taking longer than expected.
I remember back when StarCraft: The Board Game came out; over a year before it was actually released, they announced it, but in the development process things changed and it ended up being a lot longer to release than originally planned, and there were a LOT of unhappy people about it. "Why announce it and then make us wait forever for it?"
You won't please everyone no matter what you do. I think it's smarter for a company to wait until a game is nearly released to announce it, generally, as it prevents competition from trying to develop similar games that may compete with it. Companies can't base their marketing strategy on what people are or are not doing on the secondary market.

Don't they do that already? If a game is getting a hype in the "secondary market" it is more likely the game will get a reprint.

Having been a part of many playtest groups, I can speculate as to why you DON'T announce that you are working on a new game. The biggest reason is that once the playtesting begins on a new game, you have no idea what is going to happen. There are DEFINITELY times that you learn that the design is seriously flawed. When this happens, there are MANY possible things that may result... including ABANDONING the project. If you have already announced it... you would look foolish.
Sometimes, during playtest (either Alpha or Beta), you can find serious flaws that are correctable... but the cost may be prohibitive to fix them. This might result in a complete re-work of the design (usually in Alpha... rarely in Beta). This might delay a project for many months (maybe even a year). Again... the target audience begins to lose respect for you when your projects seem to "disappear"
And this doesn't even take into account production issues. If there is a problem with the printing or manufacturing, that could result in delays... maybe even major delays. Typically, you wait until you KNOW that the printing / production has no problems before you actually announce the product to the public. This can mean a "relatively" shot time between announcement and actual release.
As usual, your mileage may vary.

Agree in principle, but with this game, they already had a 2nd edition to fall back on if anything happened. If they went for a 3rd edition, tried to make it rather different, and just couldn't make it work, they could have reprinted the 2nd edition with just a few small changes and still gotten pretty big sales numbers on it.

Agreed. I almost never will pay for the same game twice.

Quite frankly, someone can't blame FFG or any manufacturer if the paid more for a game, or any product for that matter, than they would have if they had known more of that product would be available later on. I paid a premium for Antiquity and The Great Zimbabwe, but I wouldn't fault Splotter Spellen if they reprinted either. If someone paid $100 for FoD on eBay and is unhappy, he shouldn't have paid that much to start with.
Now if you bought something that was supposed to be a limited edition and then the company reprinted that edition, then you have something to complain about. The new painted version of The War of the Ring comes very close to that situation. I'm really glad I didn't pay $1,500+ for the Collector's Edition.

Completely disagree. If there's one thing I've learned about board games over the years it's that there will ALWAYS be a new edition of any game that's sufficiently popular. It might take 5 years, it might take 10. It might only take 1 or 2. But it WILL happen if enough people are clamouring for it, and FoD is one of those games people have repeatedly been wishing for a reprint of.
So, FFG made a dick move by listening to their fans and giving them what they wanted? I don't think that term means what you think it means.
It seems to me that you're trying to instigate trouble for the sake of stirring the pot: - Firstly, you say you didn't overpay for the 2nd edition, so I'm not sure why you've got your panties in a twist for the sake of other people who may have done so. - Secondly, you readily admit you might buy the third edition anyway if it gets published in the right language. (Way to make a stand for something, btw.) - Thirdly, you seem to think that people who want to hate on the new edition are incapable of starting their own threads to do exactly that. Clearly you have to make one for them.
Seriously, man, even trolls pick a side.

I've said it already. I didn't make this thread thinking about all the fans that are getting what they wanted. I've made this thread so that people can bash the third edition if they feel like it.

- Firstly, I really wanted to create a space where people could complain about this new edition. That's exactly what I've done. - Secondly, I'm not trying to make a stand for anything. Glad you noticed. - Thirdly, I'm making a thread about it because I want to, and that's reason enough for me. I have this impression here on the geek that as soon as you say something against the current, people start calling you names and implying you are dumb. I find this to be discourteous and potentially discouraging.
Seriously, I've picked a side. I'm on the side of those that wanto to complain and bash the third edition. I even think this can be fun. I'm also on the side of those that will buy the game anyway if they feel like doing so.

I bought a 2014 Ford Mustang.
Then Ford went out and created a 2015 Mustang to sell to people, dang it!
HOW DARE THEY?
--------------------------------
Oh right. I forgot. They are in the business of selling cars. And they compete with the other car companies by improving their cars each year so that customers will buy them.
What does FFG do again? Sell games. They compete with other game companies by improving games and developing new ones so that customers will buy them.
--------------------------------
Now, just because FFG released a new edition of the game, doesn't mean you can't love and cherish the edition you have.
Back to the Mustang analogy - there's plenty of 1969 Mustang owners who wouldn't trade their vehicles straight up for the "latest and greatest" 2015, even though the new version is light-years more powerful, comfortable, safer and economical (fuel).

You'll find this sentence on the original post:
"FFG could have prevented all this by simply telling everyone they were working on a new edition."
You don't see people paying 3 times+ the retail price for a 2014 Ford Mustang, do you?
This is getting repetitive. I understand you deeply appreciate FFG and the new edition. Believe me, I have nothing against you.
