I suffer from depression myself and before I experienced it first hand I had no idea the struggle people went through. I have thought about killing myself many times. does it make me a coward? I think it makes people like us very brave for having to go through it. some just are not as strong as others and unfortunately some don't make it out. Does that make them cowards? FUCK NO!!!!!!!! Jumping from a burning building is technically not a suicide though since you're actually escaping from an immediate danger. There's still a chance to survive if you manage to land on something soft.

If suicide is a cowardly move, what do you call people who are afraid of dying? Is everyone a coward now?

I think being a New York queen Darienne touched on a very important subject. During 9/11 there were many people who jumped from the burning towers. It wasn't a matter of being a coward there was nothing else they could do. Tyra is being willfully ignorant.

Darienne's a New York STATE Queen. Rochester is over 5 hours away from NYC. She was just using at as a metaphor, nothing about 9/11. The burning building will kill you or you jumping will kill you, but the burning building is going to hurt a lot more than jumping. She's likening the burning building to being locked inside your extremely depressed mind and jumping is the lesser of two evils.

Tyra said people who jumped out of the burning towers are cowards? I would say this is a different issue - you jump because you know you'll burn alive for sure so this is the only option you have for a hopefully less painful death or for the small chance of survival from the fall.

It's like if someone said shoot yourself or I'll shoot your mother. A slightly different issue than the one Tyra is talking about I think.

She said she had no sympathy for people who take their own lives. She didn't specify how or why she just said people who commit suicide. Even if she suddenly explains that she only meant people dealing with emotional trauma, it still is an awfully ignorant thing to say.

She also said there are support groups. Do you think people who jumped out of the burning towers need the same support groups? NO! It's a different issue entirely and let's be honest, we know which kind of suicide she is talking about.

I get that people are pissed at Tyra, but is this going to to turn into all the Queens and their followers vs Tyra? At this point, the amount of hate being spewed towards Tyra is just as bad as what Tyra is spewing. No one is winning and all parties should just stop.

I think the queens are trying to make sure their fan bases know what Tyra did was wrong and they shouldn't emulate it. The show skews a very young fan base these days and kids look up to these girls as role models because they're strong queer men who have faced the adversity they're currently facing.

There's a difference in publically speaking out about mh issues and hate though. I haven't seen any "oh what a fucking bitch" from the queens, just explanations of why Tyra is wrong.

It's important too that their followers see these queens have had issues with mental health and/or generally support them, rather than isolating them. It helps lessen the stigma around mental health issues. And so, so many lgbt people struggle with mh issues.

And as for the fans hating Tyra - she's given them more than enough rope to hang her. She's entitled to say what she thinks, but not to support. If their explanations and experiences help her see she was wrong, then the kerfuffle will die down.

Right now though I think that's unlikely, sadly.

While i do not agree with the way Tyra has handled herself these last two days...i'm just really struggling with why so many people seem to actually care so much about what she said?

Because lots of the lgbt community suffer from mh issues. For Tyra to say suicide is cowardly only increases the stigma around it, and makes people suffering with suicidal ideation more isolated. The queens speaking out about their own issues and views is good to see.
