does it just sink in the sand if you use it upside-down?

It's the equivalent to dropping a lightsaber

Actually lightsabers don't have an on/off button. It's more of a hold button down to keep it on. When they throw the lightsabers they use the force to keep the button held down. Jesus, I need to get a job

Depends on the individual lightsaber design. I'm forgetting who, but I recall one darkside dude who made his activation button internal, so you could ONLY turn it on using the Force.

That sounds like a better safety mechanism than the normal lightsaber. You're sure this guy was from the dark side? He's very conscious of babies always trying to find ways of killing themselves.

I don't even remember what book this was in, but he had an apprentice who was barely force-sensitive, and he kept taunting the kid to turn it on, but he never could. He looked down on non-force users or something.

Seems like a sith would have no use for an apprentice who was barely force-sensitive.

A sith also wants coffee.

A Sith's bitches ain't no bitches. A Sith keeps company with other b'dazzes.

Probably the son of someone on the board of directors.

Like Charlie the intern from Bojack Horseman.

I always thought Maul and his brother were a little more brawn than brain. So they were more physical combat than force sensitive.

As an apprentice, perhaps not, but a small amount of sensitivity is probably enough to feel out other force users, as well as resist persuasion. Could make a great bodyguard or pilot.

Pre rule of two?

Found him.

This book was of... questionable quality.

The Crystal Star was the near pinnacle of an era of terribly shitty EU. I think it was surpassed only by Children of the Jedi, a book so tremendously dull and unlike Star Wars that I barely remember reading it. The only positive thing I can say about it is that it wasn't written by Kevin J. Anderson, who I am sure would have found a way to take that material and literally kill me with it, after leaving me weakened with the teenager fever-dream fan-fic he penned and called the Jedi Academy Trilogy.

I don't know that he was sith. I read the book like ten years ago, but I think he was part of the Imperial Remnant or something.

You just know the Empire had a hard ass health and safety department though.

well if he also made it so you have to use the force to turn it off then it would be appropriately dangerous.

[–]Qapiojg [

Hey the dark side needs younglings too. Do you think they just walk into the temple and murder them all or something?

I remember this being a plot element in The Crystal Star.

Man that book was weird. Luke gradually going crazy, Han assuming girls were hookers. 6/10 Would not read again.

When Han and Leia's kids were kidnapped. The BBG had a light sabers he used to detect force weilders, the Solo kids knew he was suppressing a non human from turning it on.

some just aren't able to perform the telekinesis feat to hold it down either. Corran Horn couldn't use telekinesis at all despite raising to the rank of Jedi Master.

I'm loving this discussion.

I've never read a single Star Wars book. Where should I start?

Honestly most of the EU is aimed at young adults and if you're already in your late teens you might be too late.

If you are determined though, I'd recommend Timothy Zahn's original trilogy (known as the "Thrawn trilogy") which consists of Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising and The Last Command. They're fairly good (I might be biased as I like most of Zahn's work) and re-introduce the main cast as well as new characters who will become important to the overall franchise. He also wrote a two-parter referred to as the Hand of Thrawn (Spectre of the Past and Vision of the Future IIRC). After that there's a series of books based around Rogue Squadron that introduces the Corran Horn character, who later features in I, Jedi, which is probably one of the best EU examples out there. Later on they changed publisher from Bantam to Del Rey and started a whole new series, which is about where I checked out. Not that these newer books were bad, I just kind of moved onto other things. It's at least worth checking out Vector Prime to see the new direction and see if it's for you.

Finally, stay away from Children of the Jedi, The Crystal Star, and anything written by Kevin J. Anderson.

They did some dumb shit, but the whole Yuuzhan Vong thing was where I completely checked out. Though whatever in the world was going on with the character Callista in those books was also insane.

Wasn't her entire arc like; Luke saved her from being a computer-ghost and put her into a hot blonde's body, but she couldn't use the Force so instead of getting help from the only dude in the universe who knew shit about the Force and wanted to MAKE LUV 2, she ran away to shovel pig shit for a while, then played Murder She Wrote on some shitball planet, then both her and Luke said "I love you, but nah"?

Even when I was a young kid who was in love with Star Wars, I remember thinking "What the hell is this crap?"

And then the prequels came out. OHHHHHHHHHH WE CAN DO A TON OF SHIT FROM THE OLD REPUBLIC ERA! That's when Star Wars lost me. Shame. :(

Another one that hated the fucking Vong! /r/starwars is in love with them and I get showered in downvotes every time I talk about how much I hated that series.

Yeah, Yuuzhan Vong was the worst, and the dumbass justification that the Emperor was trying to save the galaxy from them or some dumb shit. No, don't try to make Palpatine a good guy, he was an evil old asshole and that's fine, not everyone needs to be a "grey-area anti-hero". Then we get almost-unstoppable Force-immune cockroach-Borg-Cenobite-BDSM-Predator-monsters and it's like, for fuck's sake could you at least try a little bit to do something creative? And then oh hey, they're just misunderstood, it was all a misunderstanding guys. :) Let's make peace.

Yeah, how 'bout no.

Yuuzhan vong doesn't exist, also Snake and Meryl snowmobiled off to their island with a cabin on it. :/

NO IT WAS HAL AND DAVE <333 Fuck ole Manly Meryl, I want the Stealth suit!

I'm old. I saw Star Wars in the theater when I was 8.

Is it too late?

Honestly it really depends how much you like Star Wars. I got into the EU when I was about 14 and I feel like if I started now I wouldn't be very engaged, but then again, my enjoyment of Star Wars waned somewhat as well. Now that I'm getting legitimately excited about episode 7, I can feel my inner geek reawakening.

I've been working my way through some Star Wars audiobooks on my commute to work. So far, I haven't felt like they were "too young" for me. I recently finished "Darth Plagueis" and just started "Path of Distruction". The former is a good prequel to the movies from the Sith's perspective while the later is 3000 years before the clone wars, so it an interesting perspective on what the Sith once were.

They're not, the EU books are great no matter what your age is. But disclamer, I've only read pre-prequel books.

[–]Iknwican [

You have answered this question before the force is strong in the one!!

most of the books are being ignored by the new movies. there are some amazing books but don't expect them to be part of the official story anymore.

Actually, no, Luke does a clear and conscious "switch on" thumb movement when igniting his saber in the Emperor's throne room, and Darth Maul has four buttons on his saber staff, he doesn't need to hold them down when holding the staff in one hand.

Heir to the Jedi indicates that Anakin/Luke's lightsaber has a lock on the power switch to keep it on/off.

Actually Corran Horn described his lightsaber as requiring one press to turn on and two presses to turn off.

I have a job, and read about star wars instead of working.

Well that doesn't sound right....

i like where were going with this....someone test the theory.

I also have one of these and the statement about wet sand is true, but it is fun showing off by piling a huge mound of dry sand on the blanket before heading into the ocean and coming back when a lot of people are around and picking it up and having it all just filter through.
Also one does not want to lay directly on this material as it is almost the consistency of a Brillo scour pad.

Also one does not want to lay directly on this material as it is almost the consistency of a Brillo scour pad.

So what's the point of it? If you put another blanket on top, the sand would just gather on that?

Yes lol. Product gets terrible reviews.

This product is made by Towelly. It's slogan is "Don't forget to bring a towel."

That's the episode that is actually on right now weirdly enough

Which one? There are a couple towelie episodes IIRC.

The camp/intervention episode

Of course. A towel is just about the most massively useful thing any interstellar Hitchhiker can carry.

Pretty much. I use it as a sand free island and put my blanket in the middle so I just step on this and wipe away what I can. It really does help keep most sand off the main blanket and if you have kids who love to dump sand it really is a headache saver.

So it's uncomfortable AND you can't use it to dry off with AND it costs more?

you don't seem to understand... you NEED this to be happy. your life without this item is black and white. with it it's COLOR. don't you want to live in a world with colors?

Would one know a difference had there not been colors in the first place? Are our eyes assigning signals to our brain to tell us what we want the object's hue to portray? Does color even exist?

Does color even exist?

depends on how you define exist I suppose. it's just how our brains interpret different wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation... kind of like asking do words exist or are they just sound waves/changes in air pressure.

Are our eyes assigning signals to our brain

...what? the rods and cones on our retinas are sensitive to specific wavelengths of light and depending on which are activated (short, medium, or long wavelength cones) they send different signals (red, green, blue or a combination to create a different color) through the optic nerve to your occipital cortex in your brain where vision is processed. the eyes don't "assign" anything, they translate light waves into electrical impulses which is then interpreted by your brain as an image

i know you were probably just trolling but I'm procrastinating writing a paper so .....yeaaaaaaah.

Try some Enchromas. They seem to work miracles.

[–]Abnorc 0

Good point. Do you accept sand as payment?

I accept seed donations.

Oh, so you need another blanket on top of it to catch the sand?

That explains why they laid down so gingerly.

It seems like it's made for sex on the beach. Sure you get rug burns, but you're not making pearls.

The only Sex on the Beach I like involves alcohol.

It's also heavy as fuck

Why don't they just create a floor Matt size that you put at the bottom of the blaket/towel.

I already hate the texture

You can see how they gingerly set themselves down on the blanket. I suspect it would rip off elbow skin like sandpaper.

They only work if it's not wet.

So don't take to the beach.

From what I'm reading here, this is the perfect beach blanket for people who don't go to the beach and don't want to lay on a blanket.

It's a desert blanket

So...if you put that on sand and put pressure on it will the sand come through the top?

Sweet! Now I can lay on pure seashells!

Am I the only who watched in anticipation to see them fall through a sand pit

so this is an ad?

At first I totally thought the blanket was a slip-n-slide

Instead it turns out to be a slip and rip your skin off.

The beach experience isn't complete without getting sand in every crevice of your body and having to violently whip your towel next to unfortunate people downwind of you.

I wonder how hot it gets in the sun.

A guy laying face down on the beach? Someone is hiding a boner.

They came running from ocean and none of them have a drop of water on them, classic /r/wheredidthesodago

If you accidentally put it upside down does it sink into the sand?

This shit has been dis-proven too many time too count now.

The last time this was posted, people who own them were saying it sucks.

How does sand not get forced through the bottom and form piles in between the layers when you push down on the top of the blanket and the material rocks from side to side?

To be honest, Kind of curious about this blanket.

The texture of this would rip off your nipples.

I want that. Friends

As you can see the upside is blue and the downside is orange. This is because they use Aperture Laboratories' Portal Technology to achieve this effect.

That explained it better than any other explanation. Thanks mr Cave.

I thought it was a blanket that created a pit in the sand to conceal your boner.

These are really nice for muti-day raft trips where sand gets into everygoddamnthing, helps keep it out of the tent.

I live across the street from the beach. I wish everything I owned was made of this.

[–]you_could_be_cool 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

I mean, if it let's sand through one way...

as soon as you sit on it, the sand is going to come through. Not sure why this is even a big deal. The only thing I can think of is easy clean up... but it still doesnt even make much of a difference.

That is cool.
