: An experience?

[–]neodusk[S] 28ポイント29ポイント  (0子コメント)

Someone pointed out to me a while ago that the staff did actually have that as their response to this question. I just wanted to think of how Steven/Connie might respond to it, in their childish naivety.

I think I only just slightly underestimated how controversial it was going to be, and for that I apologize to anyone who thought its intention was to conflate gender with biological sex.

Well, if rose had to shapeshift a womb... and amethyst had to shapeshift a digestive tract... that might actually be accurate.

[–]glimpee 2ポイント3ポイント  (6子コメント)

Did Amethyst and Pearl have to shapeshift them? Was that mentioned?

[–]Earthward-Bound 2ポイント3ポイント  (1子コメント)

Tweets from matt confirmed that much, iirc.

[–]yugibenMy face caterpillars say hello! 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

Well Rose had to shapeshift it because gems are genderless as per canon, meaning if she wanted genitals and a uterus...

But also gems don't need to eat, but how else will amethyst remove food as waste from her body? She'd not need to digest it necessarily, but excretion, she'd need to shapeshift those parts.

[–]glimpee 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Pearl said she hated the digestive process, so one can assume she has digestive organs for some reason

[–]BirdMomIsBestMomBirdMomIsBestMom 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

Pearl?

[–]glimpee 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Both eat and poop

Pearl said she hated the process

[–]Taven 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

The gems needed to shapeshift them because the Gem's didn't have those parts naturally. Steven and Connie have all the parts naturally. If their entire body (arms / face / hair / legs / voice box, etc) get meshed together into one, it'd be kind of strange if their genitals didn't mesh together into one. My take on why the Crewniverse calls it an "experience" (aside from being the cute garnet reference) is because it would certainly be an experience to have both, and because it's a kids show so the subject of describing genitals / sex isn't PG and therefore they really can't say anything publicly. It's one of those things they'd rather leave up to the audience to think about.

And as Earthward-Bound mentions further down on this post:

It'd be pretty normal for them to check their sex, considering both steven and connie seem to align their gender with their sex.

Anyone ever see the "It's Pat" sketches on Saturday Night Live? It was about a person named Pat who wasn't obviously either male nor female, and it bugged the crap out of people who couldn't figure it out. One time, Pat introduced Chris (or Kris,) who was introduced as "Pat's lover." Chris/Kris was just as androgynous as pat was, adding to peoples' consternation.

Anyway, there was one sketch, maybe even the last one, where Pat's at a ball game with Tim Meadows and Kevin Nealon, I think, and they're standing in between the men's bathroom and the women's bathroom. They're like, "What's wrong, Pat, didn't you need to use the restroom?" Pat looks at the both, and goes to say something. Then, as part of the sketch, the scene is "interrupted" by news about the election. It comes back to Pat smiling and shrugging, and Tim and Kevin jumping up and down, embracing, shouting "I understand! I finally know!" The end.

This reminded me of that.

"Hang on. Try tying it in a knot around your finger, then tugging on it three times."

"...two...three..."

"Yep, definitely a girl."

"But if we stretch it as far as it can go, and flap it like bird wings while singing the Beach City anthem..."

"MAYOR DEWEY! MAYOR DEWEY! MAYOR DEWEY!"

I know this might seem petty, but thank you so much for this affirmation. Some people have basically been telling me that I'm terrible for making this comic (and I'm not saying they're necessarily wrong, but it does things to the brittle self-esteem of the reclusive artist) so this was nice to see.

[–]zanhoshi 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

It means I do not declare any particular gender, but I'm also not sure my physical sex matches my internal gender model. If I had to put a finer point on it, I'd say I identify as right down the middle between masculine and feminine.

whisper gender is not equal to sex!

[–]DOMAN127Lars and Sadie totally banged 4ポイント5ポイント  (10子コメント)

Forgive my ignorance, but what's the difference? The dictionary tells me that they're identical, so this discrepancy must be a new thing.

[–]nvolker 1ポイント2ポイント  (7子コメント)

Your sex is determined by your biology (e.g. someone with XX chromosomes is genetically female). Gender is what you identify as. Caitlyn Jenner's sex is male, but gender is female.

[–]DOMAN127Lars and Sadie totally banged 0ポイント1ポイント  (6子コメント)

How is Caitlyn Jenner's sex male? She had a sex change operation, no?

[–]nvolker 3ポイント4ポイント  (3子コメント)

Sex change operations do not change your chromosomes, they just change your genitals.

[–]DOMAN127Lars and Sadie totally banged 0ポイント1ポイント  (2子コメント)

I don't get how this word discrepancy started. Clearly this is a new thing, and both words used to be synonyms, (source: dictionary). Why didn't people just pick a new word instead of changing the definition of one that already had a meaning? People shouldn't be surprised when people don't know the difference--they don't know any better because nobody told them it was changed.

[–]nvolker 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

First Oxford definition of "gender"

The state of being male or female (typically used with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones):

http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/gender

Second Oxford definition of "sex" (the first being the activity, not the characteristic):

Either of the two main categories (male and female) into which humans and most other living things are divided on the basis of their reproductive functions

http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/sex

Regardless, dictionaries are documentation of how people use words. They are not a rule book for you should and shouldn't use words. For example, just because the dictionary says that "literally" literally can mean "figuratively," it does not mean that that is considered a "correct" usage of the word. It just means some people use it that way.

[–]DOMAN127Lars and Sadie totally banged 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I agree with you about the 'literally' thing, but you're defeating your own argument. By your logic, just because people started using "gender" differently than "sex", that doesn't mean it's correct.

[–]edrudathec 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

I think sex also has stuff to do with your genetalia.

[–]SmartAlec105GNU Terry Pratchett 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Some define it by your chromosomes. They usually synch up except for very rare cases.

[–]Earthward-Bound 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

The difference is that sex is a biological property, and gender is a social label used to prejudge people. By separating the two, people can choose to define themselves, rather than being defined by their genitals.

[–]HoedoorSteven's Original Character 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Pretty much the difference is that gender is what you identify as and sex is what you are biologically. So for most but not all its the same

[–]chipperpip 13ポイント14ポイント  (13子コメント)

The author mentions that at the bottom of the original post.

Also, common English language isn't really currently set up to differentiate between gender and sex, which leads to a lot of confusion.

[–]DarthRedditAlienThe PEARLFECT waifu -4ポイント-3ポイント  (11子コメント)

I think in (western cultures at least) the idea that sex doesn't mean gender is pretty well established

[–]BrainBlowXiz so gud 13ポイント14ポイント  (1子コメント)

Hardly. Even lots of people who're accepting of transgender people in the first place are easily confused when it comes to the usage of words in this context.

[–]Earthward-Bound -1ポイント0ポイント  (0子コメント)

And we still have people using trans as an abbreviation, as though transgender and transsexual are the same.

[–]ItsJustJossYou don't know what I've done in these shoes! 3ポイント4ポイント  (8子コメント)

Actually, no. We are still very ass backwards about it all. We are getting better, but most of the western word still has its head up its ass.

[–]galvanicmechamorphGO. HAVE. FUN! 1ポイント2ポイント  (7子コメント)

I don't think it's very ass backwards when it's this recent. I personally think that redefining the term gender when gender identity does the job just fine just lead to confusion everywhere.

[–]ItsJustJossYou don't know what I've done in these shoes! 0ポイント1ポイント  (6子コメント)

The concept of "If it has a penis, it is a boy" and its female counter part is not recent. That is the part that is ass backwards. God forbid somebodies gender not correspond with their physical sex.

[–]galvanicmechamorphGO. HAVE. FUN! 0ポイント1ポイント  (5子コメント)

I mean that the terms are relatively new and not that set in stone, so you can't say not using them in the exact way we do now is 'ass backwards'.

[–]ItsJustJossYou don't know what I've done in these shoes! 1ポイント2ポイント  (4子コメント)

Ok, so the terms are new....my point is that Western culture (and a fair portion of European from what I understand) is very behind the times (ass backwards) in understanding the fact that you don't have to exhibit the gender traits that are most usually associated with your physical sex. We are just now starting to get smart about gender issues, and it is about damn time.

Disagreement aside, I like your username.

[–]galvanicmechamorphGO. HAVE. FUN! 0ポイント1ポイント  (3子コメント)
