A couple of nights ago, I posted the following thoughts on how Sandra Bland might have died while in police custody. Here is exactly what I wrote:
I'm not 100% convinced that she killed herself, but to be honest, it wouldn't surprise me either, and I'll explain why.
Although this all started as a routine traffic stop, by the time she was being booked, due to the cops' revisionist account of events, she was looking at a laundry list of charges (including assaulting a police officer). One may argue that she would be fairly confident that things would work out fine since there was a good chance of the whole ordeal becoming a huge media circus. She would have gotten legal help pro-bono & could potentially have made a killing along with seeing all the charges dropped.
On the other hand, I dunno man, 3 days in a cell could do a number on anyone mentally... No one had bailed her out, so she might have started to worry that there would be no public outcry & she would become just another victim of the system. Imagine: one day, you just arrived in Texas to start your new job, and now all of the sudden, you're in jail, looking at significant prison time & a permanent criminal record if the charges stick. Plus, you're a black person at the mercy of a judge in Texas.
Also, we learned that she had already been involved in anti-cop activism before #BlackLivesMatter was ever even a thing. I think this would have a significant impact on her perception of the situation because she was probably well-read on how horrible the police & the whole criminal justice system can be to a person once they're branded with a criminal record. If you lose your case, even after you finish serving your time, as a convicted felon, the nightmare essentially never ends.
So, I can totally see her succumming to the futility of the perceived situation & deciding that death was preferable against what her life was about to become. Again, I'm not saying that I think that's what definitely happened, but I can totally see this being the case.
The other most likely scenario, IMHO would be SUDEP (sudden, unexplained death in epilepsy) brought on by head trauma, stress & probably not getting her seizure meds at the right times (if at all). Come to think of it, since she had epilepsy & suffered a head wound, she should have been brought to the hospital immediately to be evaluated by a neurologist. This cop could be guilty of negligent homocide at the very least.
In no more than 10 minutes, I had a message in my inbox. I'm sure you can see where this is going. It was from the /r/racism mods. I was banned. No reason, no message at all, actually; I was just banned. I replied to the message asking what specific rule I broke, but there was no reply.
So, yeah, I was just wondering if SRS is now in control of that subreddit. I mean, I'm sure there are radical groups other than SRS on reddit, but this just seems to fit their MO so well.
