Over summer I worked in a drive thru at a kfc. I had a women sit in front of the menu, with the window rolled up, to take a long distant call. She sat there for 15 minutes and luckily no one else pulled up behind her. She ruined our drive thru time just so she can take a phone call. Then when she got to the window she apologized for doing it. Don't apologize, just don't do it.

Edit: I knew it was long distance because she told me. She apologized for sitting there on the phone but she had to take it because it was long distance. For those who don't know what a drive thru time is, its a timer that keeps track of how fast our drive thru is. Managers understand when it spikes, but district managers and corporate do not. They see high drive thru times as bad and there are consequences when they get too high. Not only that, its rude to just sit in the drive thru for something like that. She could have pulled around and parked and then came back. But sinc she didn't, i greeted her twice but she didn't respond ( due to her window being rolled up). I find that rude and I had to sit there and listen to what was going on outside on my headset the entire time. I couldn't remove me headset just in case she did respond. It doesn't matter if there was no one behind her, the drive thru is not the place for a 15 minute phone call.

Not everyone can appreciate how important that damn drive through time is.

Do you think customers give a fuck about drive through times when there's no queue? It's just some internal scoring system.

its really not, and if you get wrote up for poor drive through time its because you are a problem employee and they need an excuse to fire you.

How do you know it was long distance?

Then when she got to the window she apologized for doing it.

"I'm sorry, that was an important long distance call."

That's probably how.

No fair, you're actually thinking.

By Bell's Law, call length is directly proportional to call distance.

If it was short distance he'd have seen the caller.

As far as she was aware she wasn't inconveniencing anyone. If it messed up your companies metrics that sucks though.

What do you mean she ruined your drive thru time?

Most fast food places have a timer that starts when you pull up so they can track how fast they are getting orders out. ONE person can fuck up the average time for the hour and get employees and managers in trouble. It's the dumbest fucking thing ever. I was a manager at Taco Bell in college, heard EVERY DAY "let's see if we can beat that time!!!" Infuriating and stupid. As if were the timer not there everyone would just stand there with 30 orders on the board.

Annnnnnnnd that's how so many orders get screwed up. About 90% of the time they forget the sauce for my damn nuggets, and about 30% of the time they screw up other parts of my order.

If they just did it right the first time they would of had me out of their faster because they wouldn't have to remake it while I sit there holding up the line.

It's actually probably because you say shit like, "and don't forget the onions!" the commonly heard word being 'onions' causing the teller to think you don't want onions on a burger that normally comes with onions because ONE TIME you got fucked out of your onions.

So that's why I got taco meat on a hamburger bun one time when I ordered a Taco Bravo?

Or referencing how minimum wage in LA will be $15/hour by 2020.

Ha! I'd like to know what Taco Bells near you pay 15 bucks an hour! That would easily be a 5 dollar an hour or more raise for almost every fast food worker in my area, at least.

15? What Taco Bell are you going to?

There are a few places pushing to raise minimum wage to 15USD... that's probably what this is in reference to.

Yeah I heard about that. Is there anywhere that's actually done this?

I'm pretty sure it passed in NYC, I don't think it's actually been put into effect yet though.

Oh well that's awesome, I didn't know it actually passed anywhere. Good for NYC

Yeah, a few actually with more on the way.

I'd recommend more research than just that article... it's lots of changes, good and bad, but it's happening...

They must use a sun dial at Braums then.

Grocery store clerks work on a similar principle. Our time decides how many hours we get next week.

The places by my house must fail horribly. I have sat for 10-20 min in a drive through, with only 1 car in front of me, or by myself, easily 20+ times. I just stopped going because i could cook at home for cheaper and less time.

Everyone else answered the question, but next time you go inside a fast food restaurant with a drive thru, look into the kitchen by the drive thru window and you'll see a big timer, generally red and digital.

Iirc mcdonalds keeps track of how fast a car makes it through the drive thru and strive to keep the number as low as possible. They even keep a running tally of all the times they get the order ready before the customer gets to the window. I'm sure bonuses are probably awarded to the stores with the lowest drive thru times. I could be wrong tho, I've never worked at a mcdonalds, just KFC and no way was anyone gonna time those drive-thrus.

Can't you shut off the timer so it doesn't ride it up to 2000? We can where I work.

Do the orders get recorded? I feel like this would be a fantastic way to explain why it took fifteen minutes for a single order.

Unfortunately no, and her order was something really small. I think she only ordered a 5 dollar fill up.

    Hmm...

There should at least be a log sheet for orders over X period of time.

Date | Time | Time of Order | Reason

See if you can talk to your manager. If they are running the place correctly, and I assume they are, something like this won't be refused. Employees should have something to fall back on, especially when it comes to food and customers. Both of which often have changing variables.

Drive thru times are the biggest bs ever. Food does not come out any quicker since they usually just make you pull into a parking space or pull past the window then back up again to reset it.

I have never worked in fast food

I agree drive thru times are bs. The drive thru I worked at was really efficient but the only thing that slowed us down was customers. Multiple times a day we would have someone who would sit in the order taking spot and take forever only to order one drink. Then there will be people at the window that will dig under their seats and every other crack to find the exact change or just sit there and try to have a conversation about their day with me. Even the most efficient drive thrus are only as fast as their slowest customer.

That's silly. If there was no one behind her, she should be able to sit there as long as she wants. Just tell your manager what happened with the timer.

Hey guess what, some phone calls go like this "your whole family died".

Or its your boss saying "Answer this emergency right now or you are fired"

And no one gives 1 shit about "ruining your drive through time" you work at a KFC. The persons call might be about literally anything else, thus take priority in the real world. Your job is to slowly murder obese people.

When I worked at Starbucks I had a woman on her phone whisper to me, "Large iced chai," then continued yapping away. I made it for her and by then she was off the phone. She took one sip and then looked at me all confused.

"Is this soy?" "No ma'am, you didn't ask for--" "OH, I'm sure I DID."

Well goddamn woman, get off your phone and give me ALL of your specifications next time. Hated customers like that.

I work at a hotel. I hate when people on the phone just put IDs on the counter and ignore me. I don't always have all your information and I will interrupt your call so I can get to the people waiting behind you.

    [–]nineteen_eightyfour 5ポイント6ポイント  (5子コメント)

Well business man in another comment basically thinks subway and retail workers are shit and his time is more worthwhile. So that's the attitude we start off with....

Oh Subway, you can barely take 1 order at a time and it's the main reason why I don't go here that often. I think it takes longer to order the sub than it does make it.

Every time I go to subway the shitty kids working are talking to each other and having personal conversations the whole time. Laughing much louder than any human should and cursing behind the little wall by the freezer like no one can hear them.

That's not a threat - the threat would be actually making a Subway sandwich.

I still refuse to ever eat in a subway after they opened a store in my town right next to a blimpies run solely by the nicest old woman in the world who always knew my sandwiches, gave lots of meat (that she cut fresh from the slab of meat, unlike subway's prepackaged, presliced meat), had better bread, and was overall fantastic and had better food. The woman was quickly put out of business, and the subway seems to only employ high schoolers who dont know how to make a sandwhich. Subway's prices are higher for lower quality, less stuff on the sandwhiches, dirty as fuck facilities, etc. I have nothing but contempt for subway as a franchise as well as a food store. If I ever want a footlong sandwhich, I will now drive 5 miles out of my way to go to the nearest blimpies because their food is so superior.

    [End Rant]

A couple things. First subway is run like dairy queen, each store is bought and set up by a proprietor not the chain itself. If you want to open a subway you call them give them a big check and they help you open one but it is yours so long as you follow/meet their minimum standards. That being said the owner of the one you mentioned is who you should hate. That person controls the people they hire and the standards the shop is held to.

All that a side blimpies sucks, the food is awful every time I go. Probably because they aren't ran by an amazing old lady. Subway sucks too.

    TL:DR- fucking jimmy johns rocks!

I've decided that if I want a decent sandwich I should just stay the fuck home and make it myself. I work at Subway, went to Blimpies once and was served by people who didn't speak a word of English (how did they get hired??), and Jimmy John's just doesn't taste good to me, no matter what I try. There's this shop called Jersey Mikes and the only thing they pride themselves on is freshly slicing their meat in front of customers as if that makes up for their sad lack of veggie choices.

I travel a lot which results in a lot of need food in hotel times. Sandwiches are usually better than fast food but it is hit and miss. From one place to the next you never know. McD will be the same from store to store, not so great, but chain sandwich places are impossible to guess. You almost have to love/hate them based on the store not the chain.

....you left out the fact that all of their "meats" are artificially flavored, processed turkey.

I don't know if this is true but I don't know enough about subway turkey meat to dispute it.

this is true of their "cold cut combo" sandwich, not of their meats in general. subway is awful on its own merits, no need to start making things up.

Most people don't realize how many of their lunch meats are actually people.

It's okay. Subway barely puts any meat on their sandwiches anyway.

I work at subway, and I can't tell you how many people do this. if you are getting a large order then make sure you write it down before arriving. subway gets busy and people get picky. you can't hold up the line. bring a list. if you're holding a completely different conversation on the phone and trying to order. fuck you.

I'll probably get shit for this but... Ordering a subway sandwich isn't exactly complicated. I'm often on the phone for business at inconvenient times. Rather than trying to get off the phone, which can take several minutes with little old ladies, I just say, "I'm sorry can you hang on a second." and tell the person my order. I do this as soon as they are ready to take it. I know people don't like others talking on the phone. But in the ten or fifteen minutes I'm standing in line at Subway, I can cover a lot of ground with my client.

And this is specific to subway and other fast food places. But maybe I'm better at multitasking than some? If I have to be on the phone while also conducting a transaction with someone else I am never ignoring the person in front of me or asking them to hold on for me. The person on the phone gets to hold in.

Edit: apparently people are passionate on both sides of this debate. I've been watching the votes go up and down and up and down. But please, this isn't something I make a habit of. It simply has happened and will likely happen again. It is not my intent to be rude to anyone. I always try to smile and be courteous. I usually mouth sorry. But I have to make a choice, I can possibly upset the person making my sandwich or I can blow off my client. I own a business, so I am always on the clock and I have to keep my clients happy. Even when they are overly needy.

Ahh, the "I can multitask better than everyone else, so I don't need to give you my full attention" argument. It works the same way as the "I drive better when I'm drunk" argument: the person making it cannot objectively know whether it's true, but neither can anyone else.

The argument makes sense, but only because nobody can disprove the premise, even though it's totally wrong.

Why does he have to give his full attention to order a sandwich. I don't get it. As long as he's not holding up the line I don't see why it's considered rude

People actually say they drive better when drunk? That's ridiculous.

And I didn't say I multitask better than anyone else, simply that I am good at it. I'm sorry if I don't think ordering a sandwich requires my full attention.

    You sound like an asshole

People always think they're great at multi-tasking, but the fact is everyone sucks at it.

Sorry but you can wait a few minutes to order your food before making a call. It is so incredibly rude to be on a phone when someone is trying to provide you a service. Especially at subway where it is made how you want it. We have questions to ask you and I should not have to feel rude interrupting your phone convo to do my job when you came to me in the first place to make your sandwich.

Then people get to the register and bitch that either their sandwich wasn't made right or I forgot to ask them if they want a Drink. No I asked you.... You were just too busy on your phone to hear me and now I am the bad guy because of it.

Get off your phone when you order food!!!!!!!

You tell your clients to hang on while you order your food? I don't know what type of business you do. If the person I was paying to do something told me "hold on a second" and then I heard something similar to "footlong Italian herbs and cheese, turkey, lettuce tomato, mustard, no mayo... I said no mayo, that's it thanks" I probably wouldn't be their client for much longer.

What are you doing is rude to your "clients" and to the people in control of what you are about to eat.

....phones have a mute option....everyone eats lunch...... I worked with tons of clients and would talk to them during my lunch. One never cared. Shows that I care so much I'll use my little free time to help them because their time is more important than my lunch.

their time is more important than my lunch.

"Other people's time is more important than the time it takes me to nourish my own body" is a fucked up life and I'm glad I don't live it.

When my clients are calling me at all hours of the day about inane shit, they can hold on a second. And there is this thing called mute.

And I don't see how it is rude to the person making the sandwich, i don't need to get to know them, I only need to tell them what I want to eat.

If their stuff is so inane, why not just let it go to voicemail and call them back after you're done ordering..

And someone working in a restaurant is going to over hear all kinds of conversations, whether they be in the person or on the phone, so that's really a non issue.

Also, when I can get off the phone, I do. I hate talking on the phone. But getting a 70 or 80 year old woman off the phone is easier said than done.

What's the goddamn difference? This person above at least seems to be aware of everyone's situation and tries to take it into consideration. It has nothing to do with a cell phone.

Yeah you are making huge assumptions. This person may be one of the few who can manage their call while ordering. I used to work in fast food and I understand what you are talking about. Actually being aware of the issue makes it way easier to handle. I try not to do it but occasionally I'm on the phone while ordering. It really isn't that hard to multitask and take your order.

Stop feeling like you are so damned important at your subway job. I understand how under appreciated you probally feel in that field but don't let it turn you into a cynical cunt.

I used to work in subways and there are a thousand other things we had to do other than making your sandwiches.

You're priority is the customer, not odd jobs around the place. Please stop trying to make it seem like working at Subway is complicated work, it isn't.

Nah, this is normal. Someone calls me at 6 pm on a Saturday, and has a few questions. They know I'm not in the office, but a 5 minute call during the weekend means we can both start Monday off with the first draft ready to go.

I'm also not interrupting anything important. "Hold on a sec. I'll have the BLT on white, Swiss cheese." That takes 3 minutes to toast, then another "Hold on again, tomatoes, lettuce, mayo and mustard. Thank you."

I really don't understand why that's seen as detrimentally rude. Ideal, no. But I'm a paying customer, and I still say please and thank you.

Besides, usually when I walk into a Subway, they're perfectly happy making me wait 5 minutes in line, but apparently, I need to interrupt everything I was doing to pass the time to tell some kid what sandwich I want?

What's really unfortunate is that your job doesn't allow you a break even to get some food -- a process that businesses have specifically designed to take up the least amount of time possible.

You should consider why taking that client call is more important than you taking the time to feed yourself. That's some fucked up corporate culture.

most likely because some smartass employee printed it and posted it, but as it violates corporate policy, the manager probably took it down and threw it away. smartass employee wanted a pic of his creativity and dug it out and snapped a pic. (edited for typo)

Easily half the Subways I've seen in Australia have a sign to that effect. Not with creatively altered song lyrics, but the same intent. I've also seen plenty of managers back up their staff when they skip the asshat on the phone and talk to the customer behind them.

Unless he did a quick edit, he did write: "half the Subways I've seen" -- he didn't make any claim that he's seen half the Subways in the country.

For what it's worth, my local Subway does have a sign that asks customers to put away their cellphones while ordering, although the words used escape me.

Nope. Only 50% of my personal experience sorry. I'm not Jared. Sometimes feels like 600 though.
I can only speak about those places I've seen myself but that's still a buttload around the place. I end up all over the country for work and subway is reliable if a bit crap, hence seeing far to many Subways. The signs and pissed off 'sandwich artists' getting salty with phone users have been an occasional point of light amusement for us (hey, it passes the time).
It's nice to find places where the customer is not always right.

          Yeah right.

Smart people read full sentences before quoting fragments of them. You are not a smart person.

EVERY place should be doing this.

Wierd that people don't like this idea, no sarcasm

          Because it's absolutely dumb.

99.9% can handle a phone conversation, pause it, place an order, and continue.

Yeah but most of those 99% are pricks and assholes who are not considerate enough to do that. They believe their time is more important than others. Or that the workers are paid to comply with every one of his miserable whims

I'm a cashier and I like how kids are always portrayed as constantly on their phones when 99% of the time it's a grown woman

I worked as a bank teller for a while and people would do this all the time...AT THE BANK. Ironically these were the same people that refused to use online banking or our app...I hated that job.

You mean "this advert for Subway" that I posted. Thanks for playing.

good. People think their time is much more valuable than the person behind the counter. The McDonalds effect Case#4

          Former sandwich artist.

I've done this before, just without the notice and, god damn, people will get pissed if you skip them because they're too busy talking on their phone.

Half the time they'll walk out, the other half, they'll complain and rage. The other customers will love you for it, though, and my manager was always big on being quick, so she always had my back.

Used to work for Subway & we had a sign similar to this. My boss (franchise owner) was really cool & told us we can deny service in cases like people on cell phones or if they cause conflict. Loved just slipping right over someone in line during the lunch rush if they were on the phone. Always got scowl & if they gave me shit...well...go to the end of the line. People learned real quick, kind of felt like the Soup Nazi. But we knew it was either us or shitty hospital food.

That's pretty fucking stupid and mean though. People have lives other than fast food. You can't expect someone to give total attention to a fast food server, that's just dumb. You can easily order food while on the phone its pretty simple.

It's downright inconsiderate and rude to be on the phone while be assisted by a service employee of any kind. People have lives, yes. But the majority of us respect the people around us enough to put our pointless yammering on hold long enough to conduct a business transaction. If your phone call is that important, handle it first, then conduct your business. But don't expect the world to cater to you just because you're in a hurry and can't imagine waiting to gossip until later.

If I know what I want I don't need my full attention to give my order.

People really find this shet funny?

That's pretty douchey if it's enforced.

Being on the phone while being assisted by a service associate is exceptionally douchy.

Good riddance. You aren't that important. Put the phone down and pay attention.

            [–]pm_me_trap_shots 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yup, if you are standing in line waiting to be served, put the phone down. Nobody should have to wait for you to finish your conversation, including those in line behind you.

              "i have influence"

his entire comment chain put me in mind of the businessman who stole barney's girlfriend in how i met your mother.

i'm almost certain he was doing a bit, that stereotype from the early 90s where only important businessmen had mobile phones.
