How did he even make contact with a pitch like that?

There used to be a sick one called FastPlastic.

That's insane. 95mph.

Edit: it's true and here is the proof 97mph by the same guy. He's also a college pitcher.

Thanks u/_pulsar

That seems like bullshit. The gun must be juiced. If he can throw a wiffleball 95, he could throw a baseball faster than that. A 95 mph fastball is pretty much an automatic ticket to pro ball.

Without watching the video, I completely agree

Without reading your comment, I completely agree

Definitely. I even seriously doubt it broke 75.

Yeah. After this guy pitches, a 79 flashes on a sign in right field. It looked decently fast, no way the other guy threw 95.

But 79 is still ridiculous for a wiffle ball, he could definitely at least flirt with 90 mph with a baseball.

Seriously? Hold up, let me make an even more pointless conversion. 144.8km/hr x .27777 = 40.22m/sec.

Not necessarily. Baseball's have a LOT more mass that you've gotta get moving.

Wiffle balls are also much less aerodynamic.

Where does the gun measure the speed? As it leaves the hand, or as it crosses the plate?

    I genuinely don't know.

How old is he? Maybe he will go pro.

It seems as though the wiffle balls holes are pulling it faster through the air after the pitch is released, as it rose or sank it would rapidly gain speed just before reaching the batter.

If you're talking about how a batter would perceive the pitch than that could be true. But it's not like the ball is going to speed up without an outside force, regardless of holes.

Different distances; he has to pitch in college from farther back.

Nobody and I seriously mean nobody can throw a wiffle ball 95. It's physically impossible.

I tend to agree with you, and our evidence is from Tosh.0 (hilarious show, I watch every episode, not sure that's reliable information). In any case! The ball is much lighter, so maybe it's possible that it could be thrown faster (for a short period, before friction slows it down) than a baseball?? I don't know the physics, but it might be plausible.

I don't think so, a baseball is much heavier and isn't influenced by the air as much as a wiffleball is. A baseball slows down once you release it, while the spin on his wiffleball pitches actually is increasing the velocity.

Can you explain to me how a thrown ball can increase in velocity without a separate outside force...? The holes in the ball don't allow it to accelerate.

Well with the wiffleball sinker pitch, there is air flow force pushing down on the ball once it reaches its apex from the unevenness created by the holes, causing it to sink much faster, rather than a baseball that sinks and just slows down from drag.

But that doesn't increase the velocity, just the movement. If that's what you were tying to say then I agree with you.

It could increase velocity because gravity is a force acting on it to drop from its apex.

i want to enjoy that show but the god awful CBS-style production just ruins everything about it for me. they can take supremely interesting things and make it nearly unwatchable, it's incredible

    It's a comedy show.

yeah, but everything interesting or funny comes from the internet clips themselves. the writers and tosh contribute nothing of value and then this dogshit laugh track is thrown over everything. it feels so forced and robotic

It's a live studio audience. Not a laugh track.

    [–]Corporate_Overlords 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I used to pitch batting practice to some guys who played on a travelling team. You don't swing the normal way you do when you hit a baseball. You almost have to swing defensively, but once you get used to a pitcher, unless he has incredible stuff, it's not a whole lot harder than hitting a regular baseball.

What kind of ball do they use? That curve was insane!

That would be * wait for it * a wiffle ball

If you throw a wiffle ball like you would throw a slider, curveball, knuckleball, etc it does some crazy shit!

Wiffle Ball, slots on half the ball makes it do crazy things.

So it's actually designed for these curve throws... thanks!

edit: reddit in a nutshell: The most helpful answer to my question: 3 points. Lame joke: 55 points.

Probably because the answer to your question was in the title

    [–]sorry_wasntlistening 6ポイント7ポイント  (1子コメント)

Probably a typical wiffle ball. If they are worn a little bit you can make them do some pretty impressive things.

Yeah, but the more worn they are the less control you have over those impressive things.

I have yet to play in a Wiffle ball tournament that did not involve alcohol.

I believe the "mat" behind the batter is the "stikezone" aka if the pitcher throws it past the batter, and it hits the mat, it's a strike.

Pitching in wiffle ball is really fun...until you wake up the next morning.

Where I'm from we just use a lawn chair. If it his the back of the lawnchair it's a strike.

Casual... You gotta count the whole chair, legs included

I could see some brutal chair-leg strikeouts resulting.

Why don't they use this in baseball too instead of the strike box?

The strike zone in baseball is the front of the plate, not back there.

Not quite. It's three dimensional. You can tuck a pitch in on the edge without it passing through the front of the zone, or drop a pitch in on the back of the plate (though generally if you throw a breaking pitch at belt level, you probably missed your spot).

This is an argument of the rules vs what is actually called. Pitchers and catchers work to make the umpire believe the ball was a strike so yes, a ball by the rules can be a strike

The "true" strike zone is right in front of the batter, this may is behind a bit, so the ball drops and doesn't give an accurate representation of where the ball was when the hitter had a chance to hit it.

So this is basically like having Buster Posey behind the dish framing...

The strike zone in baseball is relative to the size of the batter. From the knees to the letters of the uniform.

    It's called an auto-ump

The bat in the vid looks like one you'd get from Walmart. Are you allowed to add weight to it? Otherwise it's like swinging air.

A rising curve ball. Nasty. This is why I love wiffle.

At first, I thought the "wizardry" was the pitch, then I saw the rest of the gif. Still though.... that pitch was nasty.

    [–]sorry_wasntlistening 26ポイント27ポイント  (2子コメント)

I actually played in a legit wiffle ball tournament, traveled to another state and everything. It was intense. We were good but some people there were great. Ended up coming in 5th.

Every single thing in that gif was individually some of the best whiffle ball I've ever seen.

This is why we made peace with Cuba... new recruits

It was very badass up until the batter started to run. I wasn't expecting the mince up to first base.

I was thinking to myself "how did he even hit that?!" Then I saw him prance to first and immediately convinced myself I could.

That was still a good swing, I think he was just watching the ball like a dingus instead of running.

Why is the pitcher wearing a glove?

Probably just to hide his pitch. I honestly doubt he would be using it to catch the ball.

Somebody should tell those guys about gloves.

I really have no idea how this game works

You bat until you are out (can take a long time sometimes). One way to get out is if your ball is caught in the air (just like baseball).

You can't legally touch the ball when you are touching the ground beyond the boundary, but you can jump it and toss it to a teammate before you touch the ground.

I dunno, i could get with a game that uses the term ear like they do.

Dunno what the fuck the ear is, but that dude jumped into it to save that catch, which was pretty cool.

Every part of that play was amazing.

I'm amazed the pitcher didn't throw his arm out. When I tried throwing a wiffle-ball hard I ached for days. Is there some technique?

the technique is called warming up

everything about this clip amazes me. this is not the wiffle ball that i grew up with.

Something similar to the catch here happened to me at a rec league softball game. The ball bounced off the palm of my glove and into the air. I couldn't see it because of the sun, and the shortstop made the follow up catch. However, the ump called it a deflection, and didn't allow the throw out at second following the runner's claimed tag up. She didn't even run back to 2nd. The opposing team ended the play with runners on 1st and 3rd.

Every participant in that play was phenomenal

      [–]Bojanglin_Banana 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

      Was that John Bergman?

Jesus. I didn't know there were wiffle ball leagues this serious. Am I crazy or do they have a freaking speed gun tracking pitch speed?! That 79 that flashing on the right field wall is 79 MPH... right? How do you hit a wiffle ball thats traveling 79 mph and curving viciously from belt high to chin high... on a midget field?! The pitching mound has to be, what? 30 feet? That would give the batter, like, .25 of a second to react. That's unpossible.

We pitch at 48 feet and our best pitcher can touch 80, it's insane.

Come play my team sometime! We'll rake on your weak ass glove wearing pitcher. Seriously, who the fuck wears a glove in wiffle ball?

If he's throwing curves like that he doesn't want to show finger position on the ball before the throw.

I hit a home-run once during wiffle ball in gym class in the 7th grade. Never felt more popular.

Lol the people on the bases didn't even tag. They had no idea.

Seriously, I wish the gif showed the resulting triple play. Probably two outs tho.

Interestingly, the catch counted as soon as the first player touched it. If the runners were tagging and left at that point, they would be fine. So third base may have been tagging, obviously the guy from first is in trouble.

Naw, he gets home at about the same time as the other runner gets to second. Your rule is correct, and most people don't know it, but I think in this case there must have been two outs or else people would have tagged..

You just made me read up on baseball rules and yes, according to MLB rules, the runners can tag as soon as the first player touches the ball. I honestly never would have thought that, since in a normal situation they tag up after the out is made.

      might have been two outs
