im laughing so hard like at what point would any progressive person want to just censor all of sex education? do people really not see that there is a difference between harmful sexual messages and sex ed?

it's slippery slope bullshit. "oh, so you think society propagates way too many toxic narratives about sex?? so you're basically saying you want to eradicate all mentions of sex forever??????? FUCKING SJWS"

Somehow, we're simultaneously trying to legislate the bedroom to a level that makes Bible Thumpers look libertine and "degenerating" society to a point where there's no more marriage and everyone just has sex freely.

As someone into queer anarchism, I'm pretty sure the latter is more accurate. Especially since we do in fact want to abolish marriage and create a society of free love.

Agreed. What I really want is a world like the 51st century on Doctor Who.

[–]AshkuuAnarcho-Sarkeesianist 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

Not familiar with that, what's it like?

It's the epitome of the "Free Love Future." Sex is normal and accepted, and people don't worry about labeling or categorizing sexual orientation. Captain Jack Harkness (the immortal Time Agent who flirts with everyone on the show) comes from that century.

You know, in the context of Japan's society and their hyper-uptight culture, this might actually be a good satirical anime, in the vein of previous works that have criticized their society via reductio ad absurdum.

And of course, even if it is actually good, shitty useless western otaku fuckboys will misinterpret it completely and take it as an endorsement of their revolting idiotic worthless lifestyle.

It isn't. There's gags about women pretending to have been groped on trains for financial gain. Reading porn is treated as the same thing as sexual assault in the terms of this story. It really is gater-esque garbage. Telling dudes to not flip skirts is EVIL!

It wouldn't be that different from a lot of things that Western fans have misinterpreted about Japanese media. A lot of people tend to miss how the Ace Attorney series was meant to lampoon the Japanese criminal law system, for example.

[–]nodying 9ポイント10ポイント  (3子コメント)

W-what? How?! Every case you're starved for evidence, pressed for time, your opponent prosecutor holds every card (including yours), the police treat you with condescending disdain if they notice you at all and you're routinely flung into the most hopeless cases imaginable where the judge is a hairs-breadth from pronouncing the sentence. Your only chance is your magic jewelry and/or sidekick the games deign to give you.

That goes WAY, way beyond just random silliness and usual video-game disadvantaging of the player

[–]glitch_gAll the ethics. All of them. 14ポイント15ポイント  (1子コメント)

And that's kind of the point.

In Japan, if you're a defense attorney, you're considered to be a legend if you get a single acquittal in your entire career. In addition, the populace at general sees defense attorneys with disdain at best and disgust as worse, as they are seen as "trying to protect criminals from getting their just desserts".

[–]nodying 9ポイント10ポイント  (0子コメント)

Terribly sorry, I meant 'how do people not see that side', not 'how could that be part of it'.

[–]Heatth 8ポイント9ポイント  (0子コメント)

Many people don't actually realize this is actually connected to reality and that the series is a deliberate criticism to the Japanese criminal law system.

To be fair, though, this is hard to pick up. Most people outside Japan don't actually know how Japanese law works, after all, nor have much reason to learn. And at last it is not like people misinterpret the game message for something else. They just miss the message altogether.

Demolition Man: The Anime

[–]iamspacedad 6ポイント7ポイント  (0子コメント)

Nah, satirical anime/manga about how uptight japanese culture is has a long history.

Also a long history of outraged parents trying to get various forms of it banned.

Go Nagai's Harenchi Gakuen is one example - parents & moral authority figures flipped out and protested so much over his satirical series so much that he had the entire cast killed off by PTA & parents at the ending.

This lead to him making another comic where students and adults were at war, and the experiences with mob hysteria persecuting him later influenced his 'Devilman' series and other works of his.

My main problems with this show, from memory so the details might be fuzzy:

  • SOX's focus is supposed to include all genders and sexualities, but yet they focus nearly exclusively on the straight cis boys. All their porn features exclusively women, the sex toy they've created so far is in the shape of a vagina, and while the girls do display an interest in sex they're not really accommodated by the show or SOX but have to rely on the same porn as the boys.

  • And therein lies the biggest problem; teaching sex through porn. The show is not a celebration of a healthy sex life, but rather a celebration of porn and immaturity. SOX's main methods for "educating" the students about sex is to spread porn. This being Japanese porn, there's a lot of submissive women and even some (what I presume is) rape manga. They even feature "that pool" (semi-NSFW) in their latest ED. So it's not exactly the most evidence based or realistic education they're striving for.

  • When the show isn't teaching some very shitty ideas about sex through porn, the show tries to tell dirty "jokes". Mostly that just involves adding random lewd words to sentences. Even Seitokai Yakuindomo (which I actually like a lot) has a lot better jokes than this show.

What sucks is that I do think that a good, positive version of this show is almost a must for the anime community. An actual sex-positive anime is desperately needed so the industry can start moving in that direction. It'll be a cold day in hell before that happens though.

So yeah, the show isn't really pushing any boundaries whatsoever when it comes to your typical otaku's view on sex. I've been hoping that it would redeem itself somehow, but so far it has not and I seriously doubt it will. It's just more pandering, ecchi anime bullshit.

I wouldn't usually post here, but this is pretty inaccurate so i'm going to make some corrections.

SOX's focus is supposed to include all genders and sexualities, but yet they focus nearly exclusively on the straight cis boys.

SOX has three members:

Tanukichi Okuma, Heterosexual cis male

Ayame Kajou, Heterosexual cis female

Otome Saotome, probably bisexual (otherwise homosexual) cis female

It's not exactly unvaried.

All their porn features exclusively women

  1. About 16 mins through episode 5, Tanukichi collects a Yaoi manga for SOX, a genre featuring males targeted at females. In the prior episode, Ayame does say that acquiring homoerotic material is one of their goals.

  2. All the porn they acquire was produced pre-censorship (i.e modern day Japan), so this distribution shouldn't be particularly surprising.

the sex toy they've created so far is in the shape of a vagina

They also made a vibrator, and that ends up being a far more important part of the plot.

[girls] have to rely on the same porn as the boys.

Otome Saotome is drawing new pornography. Pretty sure that's not going to be "the same porn as the boys" considering she is, in part, drawing it for herself.

And therein lies the biggest problem; teaching sex through porn. The show is not a celebration of a healthy sex life, but rather a celebration of porn and immaturity. SOX's main methods for "educating" the students about sex is to spread porn.

The members of SOX all grew up during the time when everything sex-related was censored. The sex education they received did not explain anything. They have no information at their disposal on what a healthy sex life is; just some pornographic relics. The method they use almost immediately starts backfiring and producing clearly undesirable results.

So it's not exactly the most evidence based or realistic education they're striving for.

It is an intentional part of the shows writing that SOX doesn't have any evidence or indication of what "realistic" would be. It's part of the results of the legal restrictions the government imposed in the setting. There's a reason Ayame gets freaked out when she sees actual nudity.

They even feature "that pool" (semi-NSFW) in their latest ED.

They blow up that pool in every OP.

the show tries to tell dirty "jokes". Mostly that just involves adding random lewd words to sentences

Ayame, not the show, tries to tell dirty jokes. They are intended to be terrible.

An actual sex-positive anime is desperately needed so the industry can start moving in that direction.

The closest thing to doing that is probably Yuri Kuma Arashi. The metaplot is basically "This is how badly Japan treats lesbian relationships".

So yeah, the show isn't really pushing any boundaries whatsoever when it comes to your typical otaku's view on sex. I've been hoping that it would redeem itself somehow, but so far it has not and I seriously doubt it will.

The second half of the show might go and do that. It makes far more sense to slowly ease into that sort of thing and reserve the second half of the show for the boundary pushing.

It's just more pandering, ecchi anime bullshit.

Definitely.

It is a pretty crazy show, but I've been enjoying it.
