I'm a vegan and I don't understand why someone would be vegetarian and not vegan, either.

Because she is a Hindu?

It's an Indian-Hindu thing to be lacto-vegetarian instead of full-blown vegan.

Because just a little grinding up baby animals and a tad of taking the babies away from their mother's to starve and sell for veal is A-OK.

If it helps, when I first transitioned to ovo/lacto-vegetarianism it was a sudden decision that came in the wake of a change in personal perspective regarding general activism. Having been a cheesemonger/buyer for several years that knew a lot of the farmers creating the cheese personally (many long phone conversations, trips to their farms and through their fields/operations, flying across the country to the New York Fancy Food show, American Cheese Society conferences, etc), my initial stance was that it was better for me to continue to promote artisanal cheese such as from Jasper Hill where I knew the cows were at least enjoying most of their life instead of those in large factory operations because I'd stomped through the fields with them. I was aware that everybody on the planet wasn't going to be able to have the mental fortitude to give up flesh overnight as I had, so at that time I was still convinced that 'staging' people out of factory situations through local farms as they moved towards a meat free diet was a good thing. In the end I wound up transitioning from omni to vegan in less than a year. So it goes.

Not many people are educated about animal agriculture. It's easy to ignore the horrors of the industry because we aren't confronted with the realities daily and, even more so, we are deterred from questioning the food system. There are many vegetarians who find out about the horrors and then go vegan - give them time. They may come around.

No one truly wants to harm animals unless they're sick in the head and I doubt this person is mentally disturbed! Perhaps tweet/Facebook them and see if they respond?

Nice to see some brigading by vegans.

I am vegetarian because I've got Crohn's disease which makes me unable to digest leafy greens and very fibreous foods and I'd be nutrient deficient if I went vegan because of that. So the smallest step I can take is at least not killing animals for my food.

That's an example of why some people don't go vegan.

Let's be real, though; health reasons are a very small minority. Most people just don't want to inconvenience themselves or have to give up the foods they're used to.

[–]Windiigo 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

Absolutely; I wasn't saying that was Hethal's reasoning. But it's a possibility; that was all I tried to say as OP asked how this was possible.

I didn't think you were; I was just adding on. :)

Because not everyone is misguided as to the fact that eggs, cheese, and milk don't require a dead animal.

What do you think happens to baby male chicks? Tossed in a grinder after just being born... Because male chickens don't produce eggs or provide enough meat

[–]dirak 9ポイント10ポイント  (0子コメント)

Milk requires a baby to be born. Those babies are either female, or male. If male, they get murdered within the first year or two of their life to produce veal. If female, they go back into the cycle as their mother. The mother never sees the babies again, by the way. Also, she gets murdered when her milk production dips, which is normally before half of her natural life cycle.

Actually, milk and eggs require dead animals. Since chickens get slaughtered after a year (they don't produce eggs as much after that) and calves get regularly slaughtered because we don't need calves, just milk. Also the cow gets slaughtered after 3 years because her milk production lowers and she is sick of all the pregnancies and milking anyway.

For refference: somebody who eats eggs daily kills more chickens than someone who eats a chicken a year and doesn't eat eggs.
