What is GamerGate?

Our Mission

KotakuInAction is a platform for open discussion of the issues where gaming, nerd culture, the Internet, and media collide.
We believe that the current standards of ethics in the media has alienated the artists, developers, and creators who perpetuate the things we love, enjoy, and enthusiastically build communities around. We have taken notice of various incidents involving conflicts of interest and agenda-pushing within media which we feel are damaging to the credibility of the medium and harm the community at large. We believe the current media is complicit in the proliferation of an ideology that squashes individuality, divides along political lines, and is stifling to the freedom of creativity that is the foundation of human expression.
Kotaku In Action is a community that condemns willful censorship, exclusion, harassment, or abuse. It is a community that organizes to hold the media accountable to the concept of artistic freedom by standing up for the artist, the developer, the writer, the filmmaker, and all who enjoy the freedom to create, explore, and expand. It is a community that allows the exchange of information, supports the ongoing discussion of media ethics, and protects the right of the individual to embrace their personal interests in entertainment and fandom.

I think they remove anything about politics. I don't pay too much attention to the sub, but I know they removed a post about a woman submitting the same book under a male and female name, citing politics as the reason.
Not sure why they'd let it get so many upvotes before doing it, but I think it's best to see if they respond to questions about it.
[–]DaedalusMinion [score hidden]  (28 children)
Post was moderated at first, uncivil and rude comments were removed. Then the thread was locked, people still couldn't give it a rest so it was removed.
I doubt my comment changes anything, people in this subreddit are still going to call me at nazi SJW (As people in this thread are already doing) but since you were polite, this is the explanation.
[–]HexezWork [score hidden]  (3 children)
Projection much? People are calling you cowards mostly.

Nice to know that a five year old can use a computer so well.
[–]matthew_lane [score hidden]  (0 children)
Good to know that people who know what the difference between a preserver & a defiler are can use a computer so well. ;)
[–]Liquid_drumnbass [score hidden]  (0 children)
From the article.
That's my take on it. Ignore what you find offensive. Or talk about it in a substantive way. But don't set out to censor it,
But don't set out to censor it,
censor it,
Post got removed aka censored.
Nice job.
[–]websnwigs [score hidden]  (2 children)
You realize the archive is right there and people can see its mostly civil, right?
[–]DaedalusMinion comment score below threshold[score hidden]  (1 child)
In the archive the post is 12 hours old. By that time we had already moderated a lot of comments, left only the civil comments up.
But please, tell me it is censorship.
[–]lingben [score hidden]  (0 children)
Hi, I started that thread and came here to this discussion because I had a /r/book user pm me that s/he couldn't comment on the thread and then that they couldn't even see the thread any more.
Why nuke a discussion thread that was obviously fruitful and interesting? with dozens of interesting back and forth discussions?
forgive me if this comes off as harsh because it isn't intended that way, but isn't it the whole purpose of moderators to moderate and do what you say you were doing? namely, removing uncivil comments? why destroy the thread rather than continue to moderate it?
I fail to see the rationale for it.
It is like a doctor saying, 'Yeah, the patient was doing fine after surgery but then he got a nasty infection so I decided to just terminate him instead of bothering with antibiotics or wasting any more of my time doing doctor stuff. Oh well, you know how it is. Easy come, easy go.'
How is it not censorship when rather than doing your job of moderating a thread, you decided to censor it?
[–]BunandfunRuns /r/devroots/ [score hidden]  (10 children)
Nice try, everyone is civil in there. It was actually an interesting discussion.
It was just bringing to light SJW authoritarian tactics so you decided to censor it. Complete abuse of power as mod and absolutely disgraceful. I hope you lose your mod-ship over this.
[–]DaedalusMinion [score hidden]  (9 children)
everyone is civil in there
Because the abusive comments were removed (i.e moderated), do you even know the difference between censorship and removing abusive comments?
I hope you lose your mod-ship over this.
Looking forward to it.
[–]BunandfunRuns /r/devroots/ [score hidden]  (0 children)
Censorship: removing a thread with 5,362 upvotes.
[–]crusades2014 [score hidden]  (0 children)
people still couldn't give it a rest so it was removed.
How so? If a thread is locked doesn't that mean no new comments? People couldn't give it a rest because they kept upvoting a front page thread? The horror. The abuse!
[–]non_consensual [score hidden]  (4 children)
I was making comments that weren't abusive at all. Why were they removed?
[–]BunandfunRuns /r/devroots/ [score hidden]  (2 children)
Oh wow, you weren't kidding. Anyone can look at your post history and see that you were being totally civil. All of your comments? Nuked.
It's a joke. I bet they're using the bot that tags you as a KiA poster and they just delete on sight.
I'll repeat straight up, 100% censorship.
[–]non_consensual [score hidden]  (1 child)
I was posting in r/books last night just fine. All the comments in the anne rice thread were nuked though.
[–]BunandfunRuns /r/devroots/ [score hidden]  (0 children)
They definitely owe you an explanation. You're not going to get one though.
[–]Damascene_2014 [score hidden]  (0 children)
It's abusive against their religion.
[–]hooobab[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)
Because the abusive comments were removed (i.e moderated), do you even know the difference between censorship and removing abusive comments?
So you were doing you job properly there. No one was debating that. Can we get a public log of all comments removed from the thread. I'd really like to see it.
The problem lies in the fact that instead of continuing to do your job you just hit nuke on the thread instead of allowing regular discussion to occur while filtering out the crap.
[–]twomongsmakearight [score hidden]  (0 children)
Uh, its your "job" as a moderator to remove comments that break your subreddit rules, whilst allowing relevant, useful comments to continue the discussion.
Nuking an entire thread isn't an example of good moderation. You're stopping discussion from happening. So yeah, it is censorship.
[–]FSMhelpusall [score hidden]  (0 children)
"Give it a rest" you mean shut the fuck up and get back in line like good plebs?
[–]kkiac1 [score hidden]  (0 children)
people in this subreddit are still going to call me at nazi SJW
Nah we're just gonna call you a worthless fuck that should never leave SubredditDrama's IRC where the other social outcasts and fags spend their time. /u/imakuram is another /r/books mod who should do the same since they're a worthless metareddit fuck like you.
[–]Gavizuli [score hidden]  (0 children)
Ah, okay thanks. And yeah, sorry if you get crap for it, hope people can be civil.
[–]boib [score hidden]  (5 children)
/u/DaedalusMinion didn't remove the post, I did. I'm the only mod to blame.
[–]BunandfunRuns /r/devroots/ [score hidden]  (0 children)
He's defending your cowardly actions, so you're both to blame.
[–]IE_5 [score hidden]  (0 children)
Okay, is there any specific reason why?
And why did you wipe all the comments with it aside from removing the thread, there seem to be like 100 or so left from ~1800?
There are entire comment chains with 50+ removed, they couldn't all have been bad? In fact some that still exist in the Archive show they aren't.
Don't you think it's a little ironic to censor a thread about censorship with a call to stand against censorship in literary works?
[–]ocketsr [score hidden]  (1 child)
Off-topic but why is one of the mods calling your users 'neckbeards'?
https://archive.is/YnHfO
[–]crusades2014 [score hidden]  (0 children)
Free speech and being against censorship is for neck beards!
[–]twomongsmakearight [score hidden]  (0 children)
Didn't you discuss it with other mods before doing so? Did you honestly think that given the subject matter in question, it was a smart idea to nuke the entire post? Locking and preventing new comments, despite being similarly cowardly in my personal opion, is still a far better alternative to removing the entire discussion.
Stopping people from discussing something they think is worth writing about never, ever ends well. Reddit has a boner for censorship allegations at the best of times, but to remove a post specifically about censorship? That's just asking for trouble.
