[–]FrontpageWatch[S] 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I don't know if he'll ever see it, but I just wanted to take a moment to post my experience at the gym this evening.

I'm a 25 year old female and have tipped the scales at 200lbs ... not a place I am happy sitting at. So, I have become a frequenter of the gym. Long story short: I'm dealing with it.

This evening, a couple of neanderthals (only polite description I have of them) felt it was really necessary to highlight to each other that a baby whale was running on the treadmill. Running is quite a generous description. I was mostly heaving my mass at a slow pace whilst puffing like a chain smoking Thomas the Tank Engine. Not only did they feel the need to point me out to each other, one of them also felt the need to do an impression of me. It was very kind of him; the mirrors in front of me clearly weren't doing a good enough job of showing me what I looked like, so seeing his reflected impression helped.

Demoralised I began to slow the treadmill down and return to walking whilst trying not to cry. I spent my entire childhood being bullied, and have just reached a point in my life where I'm confident enough to not give a dang about what other people think ... and yet I do care about being judged in the gym, because I'm out of my comfort zone and feeling vulnerable.

This is where the man on the treadmill comes in. He beckoned to me to remove an ear phone, and told me not to let them win. Then, he slowed his treadmill down to match my pace. He'd been flying beside me, and instead, he slowed right down and jogged beside me, encouraging me to just push that little bit more. I managed to run for another 2 minutes before it became too much. I thanked the man beside me, and dropped to a walking pace ... but so did he. He walked beside me and chatted with me (well, he spoke, I clutched my sides and tried to regain coherence). And then, when I was breathing normally and had walked a bit, he encouraged me to pick up, and he jogged with me some more. We repeated this interval cycle for the full 30 minute program of my treadmill.

He was in a full sprint at a high speed on his treadmill. Clearly he didn't need to slow down and go at the pace of a struggling, overweight, female ... but he did. So thank you Robert. You really, really helped me this evening.

And more importantly, he took the time to talk to me. We chatted about my motivation: I had a fracture in my back a few years back and couldn't exercise. Combined with University it became a convenient excuse to eat and drink what I liked and not exercise. I also have PCOS so that's a handy excuse that it's hard to lose weight. Then, this last year, I've been focusing on training to be a teacher. It's been easy to forget about myself when I'm focused on helping others. It's just been too easy to grab a bacon roll from our tea lady in the morning, exist on sweets and crisps to survive throughout the day (grabbed in tiny fleeting moments) and then grab something pre-packaged and convenient at 10pm when I finally finish working.

I was struggling at the gym this evening. I'm three weeks in to my program and starting to get tired. Wednesday is my rest day, but as I am out for my birthday on Thursday I forced myself to switch days so that I didn't miss a session this week. So during the day I had already ridden 3 horses, done yard chores, and then helped with the hay baling. I, an overweight female, had lifted and maneuvered 150 bales of hay. In short, I was knackered and unmotivated. I forced myself in to the gym, and the neanderthals nearly made me leave there and then ... but Robert encouraged me to stay.

And this evening I ran and walked 5km on the treadmill, cycled 8km, rowed 1500m and did weights. And I feel fantastic. I'm so pleased I persisted and continued. And that's due to one guy changing his routine slightly and taking some time to help and support.

Not only that but as Rob left he said the best thing anyone could ever say. He gave me a smile and a wave as he left and said "I'll keep an eye out for you. I can't wait to see how your fitness progresses." Not how you lose weight, or how you get thinner ... but how your fitness progresses. Best focal point ever.

So thank you Rob for helping me, and for the neanderthals out there: I'm not just another day closer to reaching my goal, but 5km on the treadmill, 8km on the bike, and 1500m on the rowing machine closer.

TL;DR - Complete stranger changed his routine to support me after idiots tried to judge me.

First off apologies to Canada, I didn't include you simply because I would have had to convert population percentages as opposed to using the simple state data. Secondly this is only an estimate as I do not have access to precise ping change data.

Ping change was estimated using this map credit to: /u/Zephaerus

Percentage of US Population by State is from the US Census by way of this Wikipedia Page. For the division of Texas, I used city population. And California North vs South.

I will do a best case first based on geographical location and being a league of legends player being statistically independent, and then a worst case based on West Coast individuals being twice as likely to play league of legends.

States Grouped By Ping Change

Percentages are of US population

Large ping increase ~50ms

  • AK .23%

  • HI .45%

  • N CA ~ 39% CA= 12.17%*.39 = 4.75%

  • OR 1.25%

  • WA 2.21%

Large Increase % Pop = 8.89

Moderate Ping Increase 25-40ms

averaged to 32.5 for calculations

  • ID .51%

  • S CA ~ 61% CA = 12.17%*.61 = 7.42%

Moderate Increase % Pop = 7.93

Minor Ping Increase 5-15ms

avg for math 10ms

  • AZ 2.11%

  • MT .32%

  • NV .89% majority of population surrounding Las Vegas

  • UT .92%

Minor Increase % Pop = 4.24

Negligible Change

  • WY .18%

  • CO 1.68%

  • NM .65%

  • TX El Paso 830,735 approx 3.1% of TX TX= 8.45%*.031= .26%

Negligible Change % Pop = 2.77

Minor Decrease 5-15ms

avg for math = 10

  • ND .23%

  • SD .27%

  • OK 1.22% too lazy to figure density/ping division so Im just putting it here (DEAL WITH IT)

  • TX section including (Corpus Christi, Laredo, Midland, Odessa, Lubbock, and Amarillo) = 5.6% TX = 8.45%*.056 = .47%

Minor Ping Decrease % Pop = 2.19

Moderate Ping Decrease 25-40ms

avg for math 32.5

  • IA .97%

  • KS .91% Population heavily weighted to the eastern half of state

  • LA 1.46%

  • MN 1.71%

  • NE .59% Population heavily weighted to the eastern border

  • TX Rest of, =91.3% TX= 8.45%*.913 = 7.71%

Moderate Decrease % Pop = 13.35

Major Decrease 50ms

  • AL 1.52%

  • AR .93%

  • CT 1.13%

  • DE .29%

  • FL 6.24%

  • GA 3.17%

  • IL 4.04 %

  • IN 2.07%

  • KY 1.38%

  • MA 2.12%

  • MD 1.87%

  • ME .42%

  • MI 3.11%

  • MO 1.90%

  • MS .94%

  • NC 3.12%

  • NH .42%

  • NJ 2.80%

  • NY 6.19%

  • OH 3.64%

  • PA 4.01%

  • RI .33%

  • SC 1.52%

  • TN 2.05%

  • VA 2.61%

  • VT .20%

  • WI 1.81%

  • WV .58%

Major Ping Decrease % Pop = 60.41

Best Case Ping Change Overview

  • Increased Ping % Pop = 20.55

  • Negligible Change % Pop = 2.77

  • Reduced Ping % Pop= 75.95

Calculating Avg. Ping Change

Due to rounding and not including DC / minor territories, total% does not necessarily equal 100

NORMALIZATION FACTOR TIME

75.95+2.77+20.55=99.27

ALGEBRA TIME!!!!!

(.0889*50)+(.0793*32.5)+(.0424*10)+(.0277*0)+(.0219*-10)+(.1335*-32.5)+(.6041*-50)=(.9927)*AVG

SIMPLIFY

(.0889*50)+(.0793*32.5)+(.0424*10)-(.0219*10)-(.1335*32.5)-(.6041*50)=(.9927)*AVG

MORE SIMPLIFY/CALCULATOR

-27.317=(.9927)*AVG

Best Case AVG PING Change = -27.517

All of the above is assuming that geographical location and probability of being a league of legends player are statistically independent. However since playing league with high ping is way less fun, let's do some math based on West Coast individuals being twice as likely to play league of legends to determine a worst case.

Stats for Worst Case

2*(20.55)+2.77+75.95= 119.82

  • Increased Ping % Pop = 2(20.55)/119.82= 34.30

  • Negligible Change % Pop = 2.77/119.82 = 2.31

  • Reduced Ping % Pop= 75.95/119.82 = 63.38

Checking my math 34.3+2.31+63.38= 99.99

AVG PING CHANGE WORST CASE

(2*(.0889*50)+(.0793*32.5)+(.0424*10))+(.0277*0)+(.0219*-10)+(.1335*-32.5)+(.6041*-50)=(119.82)*AVG

-19.87=(119.27)*AVG

Worst Case AVG Ping Change = -16.58

TLDR: Server move benefits 65-75% of NA to the detriment of 20-35%, Avg ping change will be a drop of between 17 and 28ms , and as a Chicagoan I am ready for that sweet sweet 10 ping.

Note: This a repost from /u/LaminateCactus also me since apparently my account from which I have made a grand total of 2 comments is shadowbanned.

Edit: Since a few people seem to be misunderstanding the purpose of this post, it is not to show what your specific new ping will be. To find that you should ping: 104.160.131.1 or 104.160.131.3 .

This post is to show the rationale for moving the servers since there will be a major net ping drop across all of NA. i.e. across all 1.7 million accounts the collective ping will drop between 7.5 and 11 hours depending on whether the best or worst case is used.

Edit 2: Please remember that a.) this is an estimate and b.) when looking at the ping map that it is not actual ping but Δ ping with green being decrease and red being increase.

Edit 3: I have seen multiple people commenting that population does not equal player base and that is true. However as I am not looking at concrete values but rather ratios (in the form of percentages) the comparison can still be made because in an ideal system the odds that individual is a league of legends player should be fairly static across the US which gives me my best case. However since geographic location affects the game in the form of current ping which increases frustration, I ran the numbers a second time with the ratio of players to non-players in regions with current low to moderate ping being doubled. This is much greater than what I would expect the ratio change to be but sets for an easy worst case

Edit 4: THANK YOU /u/whattanerd92, It's my first time getting gilded and I would like to take this moment to thank the academy, my mom and most importantly my ADHD for not letting me let this go once I figured out I could estimate net ping change /s but seriously thank you from one nerdy 23 year old to another. Unless we haven't passed your birthday yet in which case i guess we only share the nerdiness.

I'm off to play league if you want to join me IGN is LaminateCactus aka my username minus the 2 since my orignal Lol reddit account was banned for a marginally insensitive joke. Not that I'm saltier than the left coast about that, No Siree.

So if you need some help interpreting this data don't just comment, either pm me as well or now that I have Gold (though sadly not in League) just put my username in the comment so I can easily find it when I check back. .

Substitute the Atma's Impaler for the Titanic Hydra, the Force of Nature for a Spirit Visage, add a Iceborn Gauntlet to the mix in place of the Trinity, pump it all along Cinderhulk.

The S5 Metagolem.
