Treat your friend well, they are doing you a solid. You're going to fall in love with San Francisco.

I've visited a few times in the past, and fell in love quickly every time.

I've already hooked this friend up with a girlfriend he loves a lot and I'm going to start helping with rent ASAP. It's going to be awesome.

Sounds like you know what you're getting into, good luck with your new adventure!

Lol this the second time in 2 days I have heard that phrase. Maybe just the part of the UK I'm from but a solid is often slang for a turd and doing can often be used for making, as in "I'm doing you a pint". You Americans are strange.

Yea, our language might be called the same thing, but it isn't. ;)

Yeah, we "take" shits. I'll never understand that one.

"I'm going to go drop a solid." Going to say this to my girlfriend later.

In one of your trucks?

Pretty sure a solid means that here too. It has more to do with context though.

[–]some_1_needs_a_hug 10ポイント11ポイント  (11子コメント)

Move to Texas, robust BTC community in Austin, great opportunities for employment for IT admins, and a fuckload cheaper than living (or trying to live) in SV.

Austin has a lot going for it at half the cost of living..

[–]some_1_needs_a_hug 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

I also forgot to mention the part about the LOW regulatory hurdles related to bitcoin and other Blockchain technologies... have you looked at the California Money transmitter license and what it takes to get one in California?

The worst mistake I made while living in Texas that didn't involve a woman was to not visiting Austin.

6,000 square foot houses for $200,000. Texas.

Also 1500 sq ft condos for $800k.

That ain't Texas. That's where the city slickers live. You need to get on the outskirts of Houston. Where you get a sprawling newly built mansion with a circle driveway for $150k lol. It's ridiculous.

What's the catch? The heat? Critters?

Austin is awesome. But it's fucking hot. If you can take the heat (literally), go there instead.

Uhm, what are you leaving behind? Your job/family?

Not sure if worth it. I've heard that SV can be quite depressing if you're poor.

What is your skillset?

PS you are aware that Bitlicense does not apply to consumers and merchants?

PS you are aware that Bitlicense does not apply to consumers and merchants?

It does if you can't get/sell bitcoins because nobody will jump through the hoops needed to provide a counter party in NY...

You can get bitcoin for selling stuff for bitcoins. Or if you buy for investment purposes.

So how does a consumer get them to buy stuff from local merchants with them? We understand bitcoin isn't "banned" in new york or something like that, but there's no point in trying to argue it won't have a noticeable negative effect for users if companies avoid NY due to the licensing problem.

I'm leaving behind pretty much nothing. So it makes sense. Total sense.

So what skillset?

IT admin. Not a developer. I'll be able to pay the bills soon, I suppose. A friend has a couch I can stay on.

Ah good. I'd suggest learning Xenserver/Vmware ESX and focus on networking/storage. Also OpenStack and Amazon EC2, etc.

I've used VMware on EMC.

Good study more tech like that, if you need help pm me.

Set up a lab and tinker about

or spend every waking hour while you are unemployed looking for a job where you will learn relevant things by default.

Hey, Bitcoin meetup during VMworld? Hmmmm....

Uhm, what are you leaving behind? Your job/family?

...

I have no job, no money, and not much else.

[–]Symphonic_Rainboom 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

It's worth moving to stick it to the government for imposing these shitty bitlicense laws.

I'm considering moving out of New York too, and when I do I'm going to write the government a letter that says "if you want me to come back and contribute to your economy, repeal the bitlicense".

So yeah, fuck New York. There's nothing there that I want any more since they started ignoring our basic human rights. I'm packing up my guitar too so I can go make culture somewhere else.

cricket, cricket, cricket

I'm planning a move to New Hampshire; close enough to home and I won't be forced to wear a seat-belt (I still probably will, it's just the principle of the matter).

Arizona has much less regulation and lower cost of living than the Socialist Republic of California!

Good luck, probably some tough times ahead but stick it out. Fortune favours the brave.

You're going to love it. Every time I fly out there, the weather is fantastic.

..then I have to fly back home.

I'm going the way like you at some point. First Uber, now bitcoin, we're fcucked.

Go for it! Read about Elon Musk if you haven't. California is the future. (There or Texas)

Washington State is good too, very libertarian here. It will not drive you nuts if you're a bitcoiner. Washington is very business oriented, a no-nonsense state overall. There is a liberal component that wants free goodies, but overall they are not too insane, nor in charge.

I have lived in Texas. Dallas wasn't for me. The friend I'm going to live with in CA is from CA but we met when we both lived in TX. We're like war buddies.

I've visited WA state and would like to spend more time there, especially as more and more of my friends end up there.

Alternatively, you could take I-95 South until it ends. We'd be glad to show you around.

I love Miami. You should take me out to dinner at Barton G's.

I have no idea what you're product or service is, but I want to move to Miami!

Just do what I do, be an outlaw don't follow the law. NYC law only applies to people gullible enough to follow it.

And LocalBitcoins.com

Why couldn't people on localbitcoins.com just click the green button that says "Im not in NY" instead of the red button thus being able to use the site? Just because your ip originates from NY does not mean you are actually located in NY, people worried about that could just use Tor.

Dude you may be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire. I'd work and save up some cash before driving off into the unknown. You're probably a lot more knowledgeable and resourceful with the location you're in. You'd be starting over at a disadvantage and without cash. You'd be putting a burden of reliance on your friend. Just for a protest of something less than 2% of New Yorkers even care about right now?

At least get some leads or job prospects at your destination first. OTOH maybe you were planning to relocate anyway and Bitcoin just accelerated things. Best of luck either way.

Capture this journey with photos and share your progress.

Good luck

I'm just going to strap a Go-Pro to my dog and make it his job.

[–]marcus_of_augustus 0ポイント1ポイント  (3子コメント)

NY is heading the way of the rust belt ... get out while you can.

Overestimating the impact of Bitcoin in NY at the moment you think?

[–]marcus_of_augustus 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Actually my comment wasn't bitcoin-specific.

I would not say that. It is thriving and vibrant, just not for Bitcoin. Maybe in 5 years that will be a big issue, it is not now for NYC.

Welcome to your new home. :-)

I did the same thing a few years ago and I've never been happier. Silicon Valley rocks. In retrospect, New York is great too: I love it, I grew up there. But it's the second best city in the world. San Francisco is sssssooooo much more amazing.

Like others have pointed out in the thread, be prepared for sticker shock. Things out here are expensive as balls, but for a good reason. You get what you pay for.

The economy out here is off the rails. If you can write a line of Java, Python, or Javascript you'll find a job in a startup within a week (big companies take longer). If you know Hadoop you'll have a job lined up before you can say "big data". Since you're new and since nobody else will tell you this: reject any programming job offer that pays less than $140,000 because they love to hire gullible newbies for cheap.

Not many places accept bitcoin anymore, they've all shut down their bitcoin ATMs and stuff. But, there are hella bitcoin jobs.

Take time to explore the city. Rent is cheaper in the sunset district, and the girls are fitter in the marina. Palo Alto and Mountain View are overpriced. Walk/bike the golden gate bridge, see Coit tower, but avoid Fishermans wharf. Oakland is not bad but you will be required to make fun of it. Everybody loves Berkley. South Bay is more family friendly, easy, and boring. Go to tech meetups but avoid VC events unless you're in BizDev. Please don't feed the homeless.

Enjoy!

Come to Denver instead, it's way more affordable. And our bitcoin scene is great! /r/DenverBitcoin

I'm actually leaving next week as well. I've got things a bit more planned out though. I've got a job, bitcoin and a place to live though. Not so exciting.

Lunch with elon musk

I too will be heading out to Silicon Valley with all my possessions in roughly 2.5 weeks. Granted I'm on vacation and live there.

Why did you go on vacation with all of your possessions?
