Blue Bell knew. They killed people knowing about their product having issues.

The beef, pork and chicken industries have 'allowable' levels of various contaminants in their meats. They've all killed people.

Listeria is bad, m'kay. But for a healthy individual the likelihood of it killing them is low. Also, some of the people who died were previously hospitalized prior for unrelated listeria issues.

So if you are a healthy individual the risk of becoming seriously ill is rare according to this website

The LA Times reported that Blue Bell found listeria as early as 2013:

Blue Bell Creameries knew it had a listeria problem as early as 2013, and it has failed to make its ice creams and sorbets in a way that would minimize the possibility of contamination, according to Food and Drug Administration reports made public Thursday.

This wasn't the only time it came up:

On five occasions in 2013 and 10 in 2014, listeria was found in the plant’s processing room and kitchen on surfaces that did not come in contact with food, the FDA said. And the report found that on at least one occasion, after the plant performed its usual cleaning and sanitizing procedures, listeria was found again in the same place, and the coliform bacteria count was higher than before the cleaning.

Blue Bell definitely should have taken care of it from the beginning, no doubt. And sadly it took multiple people dying for them to finally issue a recall. And hopefully they have the issue taken care of 100% this time.

But I'm not going to let that stop me from eating their ice cream. I sure as hell don't check the recall list daily to see what I'm supposed to stop eating. Sabra hummus had a listeria recall the same time as Blue Bell, hope you don't eat their hummus. There was a chicken recall due to listeria, a third recall for La Terra Fina Spinach Dip, etc. These products haven't killed anyone luckily but they still have listeria.

Once again, Blue Bell should have done something sooner, but they aren't the only one with problems.

I can forgive a one time recall or one time discovery of listeria, but not multiple discoveries since 2013 and no recall until 2015. Blue Bell should have done better.

I'm glad other people are excited and willing to be the guinea pigs in eating the first new Blue Bell, but as for me, I'll get my ice cream from somewhere else, at least until there are certain there are no more listeria cases.

Totally understand where you're coming from. I wondered whether I'm actually lactose intolerant like I thought, or was it just listeria?

But I think I'd want to get my Blue Bell fix now, while monitoring on their production line is heavy, rather than waiting a while. Will they get lax about standards again in a year or two? I hate that this has happened to Blue Bell, but they brought it on themselves.

This is the relevant point. A company that knows that it is in violation of health and safety standards and that takes no action to handle the issue, and that then tries to cover up the issue when it is publicly exposed, is a company with a rotten, toxic culture.

Their factories will soon be contaminated again and management will cover it up, cut corners, and ostracize anyone who tries to blow the whistle.

Unless you're already sick or have immune issues, it's really unlikely you'll die from listeriosis, and frankly, it's unlikely you'd even get all that sick. But that's not the point. The point is that this company is profoundly and fundamentally flawed at the level of its culture. It is run by people who have proven themselves to be totally unethical.

I'm not spending a dime on them. Ever.

Whatever you say hippie 😉 I guess your gonna stop eating meat too and sell your car

So, blue Bell is ethically in the clear because they only killed sick people?

Has anyone been fined, fired or jailed?

Oh, that's just for the plebs. Sorry.

Yeah, the owners lost some money. That is worse than a 10 year minimum prison sentence for negligent homicide.

I won't be a customer anymore. I get mine at Braum's now.

Oklahoma ice cream smh

You sure your Blue Bell wasn't being produced at the Okie plant?

They might be a company from Oklahoma but they haven't tried covering up the fact their product was contaminated.

Maybe they should cover up the fact that their product is from Oklahoma.

All I heard was boomer sooner

So, is OK ice cream worse than VT hippie Ben and Jerry's?

[–]sniffing_accountantborn and bred 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

I like the Cherry Garcia

Who gives a fuck if they're from Texas or Oklahoma? You're a fucking child. Quit embarrassing the rest of us.

So has the beef, pork, chicken, and a lot of various vegetable production companies. And they knew about their contamination too. Guess you're boycotting all meat and most veggies now too?

I think you should quit cars and airplanes and prescription drugs too.

Don't forget booze, caffeine, fatty foods, knives, stairs of any kind......

There are plenty of alternatives to Blue Bell if you want ice cream that kills fewer people. If you want transportation that kills fewer people than cars, then I hope you live in a big city with decent transit, or own a bike. If you want medications that kill fewer people, well, I guess you're generally out of luck (but fortunately medicine tends to save more lives than it ends, unlike cars, airplanes, or ice cream).
