I don't eat a lot of ice cream but I certainly learned during this lack of blue bell that man... I miss it.

Look, I appreciate Texas brands and buying locally. I've had Blue Bell for every birthday growing up. But the blind love people have for Blue Bell, especially once it was revealed they knew about the listeria contamination and did nothing for 2 years really confuses me.

[–]Riaayo 6

People in West calling the owners of that company "good people" despite not reporting chemicals they were storing to the Government when they were supposed to, and those chemicals then exploding due to a fire and decimating part of the town also confuses me. But such is weird ass loyalty to what you like to the point you'll dismiss any faults.

Yep, it happens with people's view of their political party too, which is exactly why we're so fucked as a country. Both parties put up a bullshit image that matches what their voters want them to be, but when they inevitably deviate from the stances that they ran on, their voters are very forgiving because "It's better than having a <INSERT POLITICAL PARTY HERE> in office." Fucked, I tell you.. Fucked.

Texans showing blind loyalty to a brand?? Well that's just unheard of.

If the last thing I tasted before I died was Blue Bell's Chocolate Decadence, I could honestly say that it was a good life with no regrets.

This! People keep asking around at my work if we're excited for Blue Bell to come back. The company knowingly allowed listeria in their factories for years and didn't nothing about it, willfully endangering their customers. I don't see myself ever going back to Blue Bell.

I completely agree. Bluebell isn't even that amazing either. The HEB brand is amazing, and Texan.

HEB brand is far superior.

If HEB would open a fucking store in North Texas I'd be on board.

"Hell hath no Fury like a Texan scorned"

Sorry, but I'm hard to regain trust from.

On one hand, I'm pregnant would love to eat some Blue Bell.

On the other hand, I'm pregnant and listeria crosses the placental barrier.

Sorry Blue Bell, you might be safe to eat now but I'm not taking any chances.

Really, Blue Bell is probably going to be the safest ice cream right now because of the scrutiny that they're under. I might have to use that as an excuse to eat a lot of Blue Bell.

rad. hate or no hate, I'm fixing to tear some bluebell peppermint the fuck up when I get back home here soon.

I haven't had an ice cream sandwich all summer. That Damn truck needs to haul ass to Amarillo before I gotta find it.

I've been enjoying Tillamook ice cream since they've been off the market. Good variety of flavors I'd not have normally considered like Horchata or a crunchy vanilla.

Sometimes, much like the great Twinkie famine of 2013, you find some alternatives that supplant the original in new and different ways.

I'll probably go pick up a container at some point, but you know... those other brands out there aren't all that horrible.

Being from the west coast, I was thrilled to see Tillamook ice cream finally make it here. Peanut butter and chocolate is to die for. Not even on the same level as any of Blue Bell's offerings, imo.

[–]St_OP_to_u_chin_me -5ポイント-4ポイント  (2子コメント)

Tillamook ain't in Texas guy, WTF r u even doing here

They're selling it at the store near me in Dallas. Don't know why that would bother you, but we do have products from other states and countries sold in Texas stores.

I don't get the blue bell love. I hate the HFCS after taste it has compared to ice creams made with sugar.

Odd, I never noticed aftertaste till I started eating other ice cream honestly. All the other stuff I've tried isn't nearly as creamy either.

I certainly love the real sugar, I drink Mexican Cokes only (once a day).

To be honest tho I don't have a horse in the race really because I can't handle milk much and I'm allergic to chocolate... but god I love that mint-chocolate-chip now and then.

Vanilla Bean Vanilla best be on those trucks.

Blue Bell knew. They killed people knowing about their product having issues.

The beef, pork and chicken industries have 'allowable' levels of various contaminants in their meats. They've all killed people.

Listeria is bad, m'kay. But for a healthy individual the likelihood of it killing them is low. Also, some of the people who died were previously hospitalized prior for unrelated listeria issues.

So if you are a healthy individual the risk of becoming seriously ill is rare according to this website

The LA Times reported that Blue Bell found listeria as early as 2013:

Blue Bell Creameries knew it had a listeria problem as early as 2013, and it has failed to make its ice creams and sorbets in a way that would minimize the possibility of contamination, according to Food and Drug Administration reports made public Thursday.

This wasn't the only time it came up:

On five occasions in 2013 and 10 in 2014, listeria was found in the plant’s processing room and kitchen on surfaces that did not come in contact with food, the FDA said. And the report found that on at least one occasion, after the plant performed its usual cleaning and sanitizing procedures, listeria was found again in the same place, and the coliform bacteria count was higher than before the cleaning.

Blue Bell definitely should have taken care of it from the beginning, no doubt. And sadly it took multiple people dying for them to finally issue a recall. And hopefully they have the issue taken care of 100% this time.

But I'm not going to let that stop me from eating their ice cream. I sure as hell don't check the recall list daily to see what I'm supposed to stop eating. Sabra hummus had a listeria recall the same time as Blue Bell, hope you don't eat their hummus. There was a chicken recall due to listeria, a third recall for La Terra Fina Spinach Dip, etc. These products haven't killed anyone luckily but they still have listeria.

Once again, Blue Bell should have done something sooner, but they aren't the only one with problems.

I can forgive a one time recall or one time discovery of listeria, but not multiple discoveries since 2013 and no recall until 2015. Blue Bell should have done better.

I'm glad other people are excited and willing to be the guinea pigs in eating the first new Blue Bell, but as for me, I'll get my ice cream from somewhere else, at least until there are certain there are no more listeria cases.

[–]Valerialiaborn and bred 3

Totally understand where you're coming from. I wondered whether I'm actually lactose intolerant like I thought, or was it just listeria?

But I think I'd want to get my Blue Bell fix now, while monitoring on their production line is heavy, rather than waiting a while. Will they get lax about standards again in a year or two? I hate that this has happened to Blue Bell, but they brought it on themselves.

I can forgive a one time recall or one time discovery of listeria, but not multiple discoveries since 2013 and no recall until 2015. Blue Bell should have done better.

This is the relevant point. A company that knows that it is in violation of health and safety standards and that takes no action to handle the issue, and that then tries to cover up the issue when it is publicly exposed, is a company with a rotten, toxic culture.

Their factories will soon be contaminated again and management will cover it up, cut corners, and ostracize anyone who tries to blow the whistle.

Unless you're already sick or have immune issues, it's really unlikely you'll die from listeriosis, and frankly, it's unlikely you'd even get all that sick. But that's not the point. The point is that this company is profoundly and fundamentally flawed at the level of its culture. It is run by people who have proven themselves to be totally unethical.

I'm not spending a dime on them. Ever.

[–]St_OP_to_u_chin_me 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Whatever you say hippie 😉 I guess your gonna stop eating meat too and sell your car

So, blue Bell is ethically in the clear because they only killed sick people?

Has anyone been fined, fired or jailed?

Oh, that's just for the plebs. Sorry.

Yeah, the owners lost some money. That is worse than a 10 year minimum prison sentence for negligent homicide.

You sure your Blue Bell wasn't being produced at the Okie plant?

They might be a company from Oklahoma but they haven't tried covering up the fact their product was contaminated.

Maybe they should cover up the fact that their product is from Oklahoma.

So has the beef, pork, chicken, and a lot of various vegetable production companies. And they knew about their contamination too. Guess you're boycotting all meat and most veggies now too?

I think you should quit cars and airplanes and prescription drugs too.

Don't forget booze, caffeine, fatty foods, knives, stairs of any kind......

There are plenty of alternatives to Blue Bell if you want ice cream that kills fewer people. If you want transportation that kills fewer people than cars, then I hope you live in a big city with decent transit, or own a bike. If you want medications that kill fewer people, well, I guess you're generally out of luck (but fortunately medicine tends to save more lives than it ends, unlike cars, airplanes, or ice cream).

[–]JoshuaRWillisborn and bred 6

Sorry Blue Bell, you don't lie to Texans and knowingly put them in danger for years and just get to come back to a ticker tape parade.

Blue Bell isn't even that great. It's nice that at least they've kept the size, but it's obvious they've been watering down the product for a while now. If you let and ice cream melt and refreeze it, check the texture. If a layer of ice forms at the bottom, you know it's cheap shit, and Blue Bell does just that. That's why it needs all that carrageenan and gum arabic or whatever emulsifier crap they put in it. Other brands not as much.

Which brands would you recommend then? I know from this that I shouldn't eat Breyer's.

If you can find Tillamook ice cream in one of your stores I would get on that shit, its pretty good.

I'll keep an eye out. Maybe Central Market has it.

Yeah the Breyer's thing is absolutely hilarious, it's not classified as "ice cream" but "frozen dairy dessert" or something like that. A shame the US doesn't have more stringent food laws like France. Haven't eaten ice cream in a long time, but I would say Ben & Jerry's or maybe Haagen Dazs. Just check the labels and make sure the first ingredient is cream and not milk. Also check the nutrition information and see how much fat it has per serving. More fat means more cream, which is what we're paying for. It's not ice milk, it's ice cream.

Have you tried the melting experiment with any of the ones you mentioned?

It still forms some, but not nearly as much as Blue Bell. It's best to make what you can at home. All the food brands are owned by a handful of companies and they will cut corners anywhere and everywhere. I have watched once decent brands get watered down to shit, Sun Chips, Snapple, Progresso, etc. Anyways, just check out the ice cream recipes online... they're all basically the same, for good reason. Cream, whole or full fat milk, eggs and sugar.

Talenti Gelato. Only difference between ice cream and gelato is gelato has less/no cream and more milk. It's pricey when not on sale, but it's on sale often. Sea Salt Caramel is amazing.

I bet these negative Nancy’s here are not from Texas. BB is as Texan as Blue Bonnets, the Alamo, and prickly pear.

born and raised. will never buy their products again

Same, shame, not even a person fired

Exactly---having some "fancy" ice cream instead of BB at childhood birthdays was tantamount to treason. And I still won't buy them again. Unless it's all they have at the gas station on the way home from an outdoor concert. (Desperate times and measures, you know.)

It is truly the darkest timeline when Texas has to look toward Oklahoma for ice cream salvation.

I like Blue Bell and all, but I've boycotted them because they never brought back Gingerbread House.

It was one of the Holiday Favorites. Every other Holiday Favorite has been brought back except for that one. It was cinnamon ice cream with gingerbread pieces, sprinkles, and marshmallows and it was the best ice cream I've ever had. Nothing I've tried has come close to it. It's such bullshit that they haven't brought it back. It's been like 5 years now.

Sweet jesus, if these comments taught me one thing, Texans are pretty damn passionate about their ice cream.

Probably because its so hot here...
