Background
The future of energy generation and consumption across the world will be based on ‘prosumers’. This concept will see householders and businesses simultaneously become producers and consumers of clean energy, through localised renewable microgeneration and a connection with smart grids. This will be enabled through online and interactive platforms that will enable prosumers to monitor their production and consumption of energy, and sell surpluses within a marketplace. Blockchain technologies could enable such a platform to be secure, indisputable and scalable.
Birmingham-based expert in renewable energy, sustainability and the delivery of low carbon projects, is seeking enthusiastic co-founder(s) to develop a platform to help usher in the age of the prosumer. With knowledge of the technologies, approaches, markets and regulatory regime, the current co-founder has extensive business networks and has identified multiple routes to potentially lucrative markets. The co-founder also has amateur understanding of the developments within the Blockchain space. It is believed, that for efficiency and scalability, a prosumer platform could be built as a sidechain to one of the leading Blockchains (Bitcoin, Litecoin, etc.). However, this is not essential and is open to input by co-founders.
Requirements
The project requires co-founder(s) bringing specific expertise and attributes outlined below. Co-founder is open to engaging with one individual with all the below skills or multiple individuals with different skills. Roles are not defined and open for discussion. Co-founder is also interested in talking with individuals outside of the below descriptions, who believe they could add value.
- Programme and/or Blockchain/sidechain developer
Individual(s) looking to take the lead role as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) or equivalent, within the development of the online platform. With the current co-founder providing strategy, support and guidance where needed, the individual(s) will be able to make the platform a reality. Platform will remotely log generation of renewable energy, potentially on a Blockchain, and enable consumers to purchase generated energy. Current co-founder is open to working with partners of different ages and experience, including aspirational graduates, fitting all or part of the description. Individual(s) will be expected to lead decision-making in regards to the technological development of the platform.
- Customer facing website/mobile application developer
The above platform will need to be accessible by prosumers through an interactive website and eventually mobile application. Current co-founder is looking for individual(s) to take the lead role as Chief Customer Officer (CCO) or equivalent, through developing an interactive website portal. With the current co-founder providing strategy, support and guidance where needed and is open to working with partners of different ages and experience, including aspirational graduates, fitting all or part of the description. Individual(s) will be expected to lead decision-making in regards to the development of the customer facing website and/or portal.
- Entrepreneurial Tendencies
The project will be potentially the first of its kind, so it is hoped that co-founders will have the drive and enthusiasm to seize and identify opportunities, within an innovative space. It is anticipated they will take a collective role in shaping the brand, strategy and approaches, in collaboration with the current and other co-founders. Experience or background in start-ups, would be preferred but not essential.
Time Scale
The market is developing fast, with two potential competitors, attempting different approaches/business models currently engaging in early-stage small-scale trials in the UK and Netherlands. However, the potential market is significant, with space for multiple providers offering alternative solutions. Co-founder would be interested in identifying co-founders as soon as possible to plan the business model further and officially register the company. Co-founder would like a basic prototype developed before spring 2016, as a series of accelerators, competitions, grants and support have been identified.
Reward
As a co-founder, the individual(s) will have an equal equity share within the company and will be integral to decision-making and development. The idea has incredibly disruptive potential, within a fast growing and globally significant market. Co-founder has already identified first customers and distribution channels within the West Midlands, with potential links internationally. Future opportunities also exist within the ‘microgrid’ and ‘negawatt’ spaces. Co-founder is aware of potential grant funding that may provide wages at the early stage of the business.
If the business is able to develop platform and deliver to potential first customers, revenue of £100,000s could be generated within short-to-medium term. Co-founder is interested in developing the business to either become a significant player within the energy market, or to be sold on to a larger organisation. Either way, co-founders will be rewarded significantly.
