It's SAINT Rommel, you filthy heathen. Prostrate yourself to Heidenheim an der Brenz five times.

That makes it heresy. Gotta solve the first two Gefechtsaufgaben for that one.

This set off a lot of discussion on Rommel.

I've since refined my stance, and decided that Rommel was a nincompoop. That he rejected general staff school really came back to haunt him, as he was completely incapable in the operational art, which German officers jerked off to.

He was a better Colonel than General.

The veneration of Rommel is a wonderful shorthand for the Third Reich's military failings. The focus on tactics and daring exploits (Ghost Division) over less "cool" areas like logistics, procurement, intelligence and overall strategy was endemic, with Rommel being that focus personalized. As u/seaturtlesalltheway put it,

He was a better Colonel than General.

The hilarity is, that operational art was von Moltke approved wanking aid for the Wehrmacht.

But there was a cult of initiative / attack, too.

Heck, Truppenführung is the closest doctrinal document that the Wehrmacht had.

Rommel logistics are best logistics. Not for Germany, but hey, details, right?

I like the way this article summed up Rommel: "Damn the Logistics, Full Speed Ahead!"

I think part of the idealisation comes out of his forced suicide through the July Plot - he can be connected to the resistance against Hitler even if his likely involvement was simply turning a blind eye to what was going on in his own staff.

The British also needed a Clean German to make German rearmament palatable and possible. Liddell Hart thus edited the Rommel Papers... appropriately.

He also created the myth of Blitzkrieg, so fuck Liddell Hart
