I gamed when scientists said gaming is addictive.

Now they are gone.

And I am still gaming.

Oh wait....\s\

I played games everyday and I never got addicted.

I used to do heroin every day. Never got addicted. :-)

Did the "D&D is Satanic!" narrative appear before the "Arcades cause crime!" narrative? For some reason I've got it in my head the Arcade one came first.

D&D was the first. Like I've been saying, this shit's been going on for over 30 years.

Not just with games either. Heavy metal music was accused by social conservatives of causing kids to commit suicide, and gangsta rap was accused by liberals of promoting homophobia and sexism.

These kids with their fancy pointed rocks that they use as tools. What's wrong with a good old fashioned flat rock? Ey? Ey?

[–]AvianMinded/r/punchablepareidolia 7

Have you ever heard of Operation Mindfuck? One of the projects they took on was to send letters to some of the most vocal churches/people that were taking a stand against "the Devil's music". They used official illuminati letterhead, and basically said, "You're right. Rock is devil music. But it took you forever to catch on... We've been doing this since Beethoven."

[–]Arkene 2

rap was accused by liberals of promoting homophobia and sexism.

not liberals, Authoritarian left are not liberals, but to be fair on them, they did get this one right some rap does...but my response has always been so what? its a song if you do something stupid because a song said to do it, then you are a dick.

[–]Magikarp_evolved 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Because, people who don't understand something and see other people liking that something, especially teens will get up in arms about it.

Everything in OP's link is directed solely at kids. D&D, Arcades, violence in gaming, all of it.

I generally equate this kind of thing to a parent telling their kid "I don't like you dating that boy/girl. Yes, I know you're the one dating them and not me, but your opinion is irrelevant because I made a snap judgment based solely on their appearance and that should be enough."

Oh, this goes back way further than that. Every time a new medium emerges, someone will be there to call it wrong and evil. Also of note is the Comics Code.

It's been happening since at least the nineteenth century us fucking chess if all things https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20140613/08020527566/that-time-when-people-thought-playing-chess-would-make-you-violent.shtml

Yeahhh... Let's go back even further than that to, say, 1697, where the Catholic Church pointed to Italian Opera as being a place where "'extravagance, gluttony and every other most guilty form of intemperance triumphed, so that the resources of families were squandered, youth was corrupted, and pilgrims were scandalized' (Ademolo 1888: 196)" (Page 108 in Italian Operas) Empahsis mine.

There has always been a new media, and it has always corrupted the minds of the youth. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

Lets go back further to 399 BC, when some guy named Socrates was accused of corrupting the youth.

[–]Javaed 2

What with that independent thinking and questioning of what had come before and all.

Let's go back even further to the time when Grock said that cave painting made young people only want to paint naked women instead of hunting mammoth or discovering how to make fire.

:edit: I know mine is a joke, but all the other entries in this thread are really neat.

I wouldn't be surprised if that did happen.

Don't forget all the violence and degradation penny dreadfuls "caused" for the Victorians.

Nice, I am not at all surprised, but I didn't know this, totally saving it for later.

The hilarious thing is the only media where adverse psychological effects have a substantiated claim are books. After the release of "die Leiden des jungen Werther" by goethe there was a suicide wave directly inspired by the book, but noone would dare to create a "anti-book" narrative because it would make you look like Hitler. (Also it would be idiotic since on average, reading still has a positive effect, despite one example where it was negative for a short amount of time)

[–]frankenmine/r/WerthamInAction - #ComicGate 4ポイント5ポイント  (1子コメント)

SJWs literally burn books. One burned C.H. Sommers' books, took photos, and shared them.

They don't seem to mind looking like Hitler.

Well you can't expect too much out of idiots, now can you?

True, if we wanna be accurate they've been burning books since the fucking dark ages.

When fire was first invented SJW Ug was all like "I wish someone would hurry up and invent media, so we can burn objectionable content".

Yeah, they spoke just like that.

more like 40 now, it started in the 1970's with the satanic narrative. It sort of forked into the "roleplaying is linked to the mentally ill" with Rona Jaffe's novel "Mazes & Monsters" in 1981, and then the movie where Tom Hanks starts LARPing in a cave with college friends and hits his head, and think he's his game character for the rest of his life.

I thought in that Movie he was pushed into playing the game again because his college buddies found out he was really good at it when he was younger, He resisted as much as he could because he knew the dangers of being addicted to the game. But once he started playing again he lost control of himself and the game took over causing him to mentally snap and become his character.

The consumer revolt is not really a lifestyle choice or identity I wear, it is just something that has to be done so my hobby, and my entertainment, is secure until the my end of days or the Chinese invade-- whatever comes first. Also, I am not juiced on roids and have never met Cheryl Crow, though I enjoy her work. If you are looking for an identity, try the identity of a nice person who helps others.

You think gaming is going to end if the Chinese invade? They are even more fanatical than we are. I'd love to see the SJWs go after the Our Glorious Revolutionary masters' gamers.

What's with the association with gamers and gaming in general to the Playstation controllers anyways? Even the official Gamergate logo has a silhouette of a Playstation controller.

Why not something more generic, or something more classic like the NES controller or keyboard+mouse lol?

Arcades cause crime? That was a thing?

It's STILL a thing actually. Here's an article about Super Arcade, the keystone of the Fighting Game Community in Southern California for the past few years, and their struggles relocating. http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2015/08/kings-of-poverty-super-arcade-the-city-of-azusa-an.html Some relevant quotes from the article because it's somewhat TL;DR:

Many of the local residents who shot down the arcade had made assumptions about the kind of place Watson’s arcade was— a den for the kinds of troublemakers you’d see in 80s movies, the kind with the over-the-top hairstyles and studded leather jackets to match their sociopathic tendencies. It’s a powerful image to draw from, especially when it allows you to profile the kind of people who’d go to an arcade as the same kind of people who’d urinate on shopping centers after midnight.

Second, seeing that the permit was for a “coin-operated arcade,” the kind they figured would attract even more delinquency, they likely sprang into action in a way they wouldn’t have for another kind of business. When these two things coincided, voicing their disapproval may have been a no-brainer.

But for the commissioners who had never set foot in arcade, the image of smoke-filled arcades filled with young criminals stuck, and it would have taken more than a few people speaking against this perception to sway them.

Who the fuck is that Alan Kisler guy being a douche nozzle in the comments? Holy fuck.

Edit: No surprise, he's a feminist SJW whiteknight.

Thanks for this link. I had no idea they were moving and the story was a good read (and unfortunately exactly what i expected). When i was last in socal (San Diego) I made the drive up to Walnut just to go to this place and play SF4 which at the time was not in any other arcades in the US. I grew up on arcades (Hawaii and then DC). SF3 and Soulcaliber were my jam. All of these issues are such nonsense. There was no crime, just a competitive community of people that did this as a social outlet.

Well sure, pretty much any place where youth congregate is bound to be associated with crime.

They also used to say that comic books caused crime too. Basically, the octogenarian sociopaths who run all levels of government claim that anything they personally dislike causes crime and needs to be banned.

Ever see this documentary? The whole thing is on YouTube but is blocked in the USA.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HrXIu5ibYk

Some truly hilarious shit.

Edit: Meant to add, the last part of it is actually all about the decline of arcades, even before consoles got very big. Violence, drugs, etc.

I'll game on

Uh, the one place in town to buy drugs was at the arcade. So they did kinda have a point.

You think that the arcade caused drug use? It couldn't possibly be that people selling drugs would go to where people like to gather...

[–]frankenmine/r/WerthamInAction - #ComicGate -1ポイント0ポイント  (0子コメント)

Criminalizing drugs is a likely related problem.

You can't kill the gamers
The gamers will live on
Christians tried to kill the gamers
But they failed! As they were smote to the ground
Politicians tried to destroy the gamers
But they failed! as they were stricken down to the ground
Feminists tried to kill the gamers
Hahahahaha!
They failed! As they were thrown to the ground

No one can destroy the gamers
The gamers will strike you down with a vicious blow
We are the vanquished foes of the gamers
We tried to win for why we do not know

Journos tried to destroy the gamers, but the gamers had their way
Feminists tried to dethrone the gamers, but gamers were in their way
Christians tried to destroy the gamers, but the gamers were much too strong
Court rooms tried to defile the gamers, but the courts were proven wrong

Gamers!

[–]Defconwargamesdisrespects mods 0

I didn't know that. But even if that line would've been "I tell you to end your life" who in there right mind would do that? I've been told online to jump of a bridge many times but i'm still here. (the bridges here are way to low ;p)
