Excuse: I have arthritis/asthma/whatever
Reality: So do I. Find exercises you can do. Use your inhaler. Go for a fucking walk. Unless you have lock-in syndrome or are a quadriplegic, why are you making excuses for yourself? Use your ability to exercise (WHICH YOU SHOULD BE THANKFUL FOR) and stop acting like you can’t.
Excuse: I have a slow metabolism.
Reality: First of all, you most likely don’t. Bigger people in fact have a faster metabolism than thin people because their bodies have to work harder to take care of the larger mass. Outside of that, controlled for height and weight, human metabolism differs no more than 400 kcal/day for adults without a genetic disorder.
Excuse: I eat healthy and I’m still fat!
Reality: No, you don’t. If you were eating healthy, you’d be losing weight. First of all, healthy eating encompasses both substance and amount, not just one of those two things. Second of all, it is very difficult to have a big glut of calories without processed foods. If you weigh 250+ lbs, I very much doubt your ‘healthy’ diet.
Excuse: People at the gym/outside/etc make fun of me!
Reality: Bull fucking shit. And if they do, fucking ignore them or find a new gym. You have social anxiety, not some magic complex that makes people make fun of you. People at the gym don’t give a shit about other people at the gym as a general rule. Mind your own business and get your exercise done. Not to mention you can lose weight without exercising at all.
Excuse: There are no exercise clothes in my size!
Reality: Wear athletic pants and a T shirt. Or fucking sweatpants. If I hear this one more time I’m gonna scream. You do not need special clothes to exercise in. They do not have magic powers.
Excuse: 95% of diets fail, why bother?
Reality: Crash diets fail. There has not been a single reliable study that actually backs up that long-term lifestyle changes aren’t successful. All of the frequently-quoted studies were either done on short-term, very low calorie diets, or were done too long ago with too small a sample size to be reliable. Newer data shows that permanent lifestyle changes are something like 65% effective, so get off your ass and stop using this as an excuse.
Excuse: I’m happy with my body, I can’t be happy with it while changing it! That gives power to the patriarchy!
Reality: That’s beautiful, that you would sacrifice your health to prove a point to some abstract concept such as the patriarchy. How about being happy with your body and treating it well because you like it? That’s what I do.
Excuse: Fat doesn’t equal unhealthy!
Reality: In fact it nearly always does. Being obese increases the chance of death fourfold over a 10 year period in otherwise healthy males. Not to mention the increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and diabetes, not to mention joint problems. And if you are 20 years old and telling me this, shut up. Come back when you’re 40 and have been putting 100 lbs of extra pressure on your knees for the last 20 years. It WILL get worse over time.
All true. For the first one, though, consider consulting a trainer and/or doctor before starting on more vigorous...
