I'm slightly miffed by all the pictures depicting vegans gallivanting around with animals. I've lived on a farm, I know people who do so now, I know people who work at a zoo, and I know people who work at an animal shelter.

None of them are vegans. Every single vegan I know is a city person who, at most, has a dog.

It's a silly little thing but it always nagged at me. Just because I do not want an animal to be tortured or murdered doesn't mean I want to dance the waltz with a cow.

I've lived on an organic dairy farm, worked at a zoo, volunteered for the humane society, and I would fucking love to dance a waltz with a cow.

As would a lot of people. But not all.

I'm betting that they're pretty clumsy on two feet.

I doubt it's supposed to be taken seriously. Of course there are non vegans donating time at shelters and vegans who only come into contact with the occasional sea gull trying to steal their food. But showing animals frolicking with humans is a quick artistic way to show a more peaceful coexistence between mankind and the rest of the animal kingdom.

Sure, this picture is definitely metaphorical and artsy in its portrayal of a vegan world. It is just those farms are where animals often live to die, regardless of the way those farmers may have treated them during their life, and those zoos are where animals are kept in inappropriate habitats, and those nonvegans working at the animal shelter may be supporting the torture and murder of animals by consuming them, even though they make great contributions in other ways.

Being vegan doesn't mean you want to dance the waltz with a cow. It means that when you come upon a cow, like I do when I hike around UC Santa Cruz campus, I don't think, "that cow would taste good," or, "I could make a nice wallet out of that cow." I think about the cow in a similar light that I do for dogs: I don't want to harm them and they could be my friend.

To me, the point of this image isn't to necessarily say "Veganism equals animal-human dance party," it says, "this ideological goal isn't possible while people still view animals as food, clothing, entertainment, and such." Think about farm sanctuaries. I suspect the majority of workers on them are likely vegans. And, while people continue being vegan, the right-side of this image will necessarily exist.

Did you come here for your worldview to be shattered or to project your worldview as truth?

Neither.

I come here because I think you guys say stuff I want to read.

I would guess that those raised in a farm are raised thinking meat and dairy is okay, since that's how they usually make a living.

People in the city don't have the pressure of family without outside influence, so they become more easily knowledgeable on the fact.

In order to go from city to farm, you basically need to be rich, like jon Stewart's wife.

I actually know people at the zoo and at animal shelters that are vegan, so there's that.

I'm not saying that all people who work with animals are not vegan. I'm saying that the association is silly. Vegans don't need to like hanging out with animals, and veganism isn't a requirement for hanging out with animals.

It's especially silly since it's always this lovey dovey silly waltzing thing, which takes the argument to the level of a five year old. Which isn't necessary. Veganism has plenty of arguments without doing that.

I know it's the nitpick to surpass all nitpicks.

This is a cartoon, not a statistical fact filled spreadsheet Mr silly dude. I feel like I just said that in Sylvester the cat's voice. :) You're like a silly inducing silly bomb. In a good way of courth.

I am quite aware of my silliness.

Hence the name, so no one can accuse me of being unaware of the silliness of my statements.

Sorry, I should not have worded it like that. I like the silly in you.

I love the threads this image inspires. Did you see the last one? I think it was in r/vegetarian. Worth a look.

My Dad and his partner are vegan and they basically have a small animal sanctuary. But yeah vegans are just normal people, I don't have time to care for lots of animals.

They forgot, "you're gay" as one of the bricks.

Agree with all but one of the blocks. The Jain monks of India do consider that animals, plants, and even microorganisms have feelings, and their dietary and lifestyle restrictions are even more strict than the vegan ones to accomodate for that worldview.

As someone with an art degree, I feel especially complacent when I see illustration of that quality making the rounds. It's a great concept!
